I have been on a few of the canyonning trips and this is one to build some serious self confidence; swimming, ducking, jumping, diving and all-but flying our way through the Esk Valley Gorge. Putting our lives into the hands of our guides didn't seem to matter to us as they were incredibly experienced, trustworthy and a hell of a lot of fun! They were great days out! As cliché as this sounds Kiwi Adventure actually have something for the whole family to enjoy. I would recommend any of their adventure experiences to anyone and everyone!

Has a map showing where to go, but crap signage directing you once on your way around. No bins... Just a poor sap walking with a rubbish bag. On recommendation of a local guide we made the 30-minute drive from Napier over to the beach-it is easy to find-follow the signs and when the road ends you are there. The beach runs for more than 5 miles and is big and wide, perhaps 50-85 yards, with soft golden sand. We went early to avoid the January heat and spent about 2 hours just strolling at the edge of the surf. Best part? There were very few people-apparently going to the beach isn't too popular with Kiwis, even during summer s hook holiday periods. During our 2-hour walk along the sand and surf we saw a total of 3 people on horse, 2 people exercising their 3 chocolate labs (half the beach is off leash for dogs), 2 surfers and one mom with two little kids-that's it. Note, there are no bathrooms or concessions so plan accordingly. A must do spot if you like the beach.

The beach itself seems to go for miles and miles along the magnificent Hawke's Bay. Our driver did mention that this part of the beach was not suitable for swimming because of all the rocks everywhere. With that being said, "Beach Domain " consists of more than just the beach area. Its grassy areas are ideal spots for picnics and relaxation ! There is also a bike trail that extends up the coast towards the aquarium and beyond! The trail can also be walked with plenty of benches along the way. The waterfront offers fine dining /spa treatment/playgrounds/beautiful gardens/camping parking/shopping/music events at the "Napier Soundshell" and so much more ! We got up there on a hot and sunny Thursday around 11 am and there were only a few people at the top. Thirty minutes is plenty long to take in the view and snap a few pictures. When conditions are right, hang gliders take off from the summit too and it is also the starting point for a mountain bike trail. Definitely worth a short visit if you are in the area.

But, later that day, the ship's shuttle bus dropped us off right in front of Napier City Bike and we quickly decided to rent bikes for a self-guided tour. It was great! Very friendly and quick service, lots of choices, directions and a map, and truly a bargain for about 1 1/2 hours rental. On return we were welcomed back and asked about our trip down the beach and back. We highly recommended this, especially for cruise ship passengers with a little time available.
