This 1930's Art Deco building, which was famously destroyed in the 1931 earthquake and celebrates the liberty of women during this era, sits idyllically in the city centre of Napier. The décor is completely in vogue with Napier's Art Deco history and name for being the Art Deco capital of the world. The 1154 seat theatre was rebuilt after the earthquake and opened for it's first performance on the 3rd June 1938. For these reasons alone the Municipal Theatre not only hosts many of Napier's plays, shows, and production, but is also a very sort after tourist destination.
