Worst experience of my life, I have not had to deal with someone so dishonest before.
We submitted a very generous offer significantly above asking price because we just wanted to buy the place and be done.
We were very surprised when we received a counter offer asking for an additional 6% above our offer; our offer was already above asking, now it's another 6%+ ? That's a lot of money for us.
We asked why so much more?
We were told that they had "MULTIPLE" other offers above the initial asking price and specifically 2 other offers (which we never saw) that were SEVERAL thousands more than what we already offered.
We were told that if we simply were willing to come up to that same price they would sell to us instead of anyone else.
(We made the mistake of saying yes and then backed out the very next day; we did not even get to fund the escrow, we backed out the "next" day. We realized that the bank would never appraise the property for the amount they wanted and their counter included waiving the appraisal contingency, because they knew it would not appraise for that value.)
We said no, pulled out before funding escrow and made peace with the fact that we were not going to get this property because there were "MULTIPLE" other offers above asking and 2 way above our offer.
Lo And Behold the property does not sell, it's back on the market 3 days later and with another open house scheduled for the upcoming weekend. The "new" price is 3% more than the original ask, but still significantly lower than what we offered!!! OMG!
What happened to all those other offers???
Surly not all of those people pulled out at the same time....
We were told there were 9 other offers above asking.
All 9 people, not including us, pulled out???
We are told they are back on the market.
We contact the seller's agent and simply say, "we are still interested."
Keep in mind that our initial offer was still above their new higher ask...
Long story short, they dropped out of multiple other escrows.
They call us.
They ask us to submit multiple different offers, which they proceeded to ignore.
The offers they don't ignore, we are told, "there are other offers higher than yours." and "we want x amount".
This time we don't even think twice and just say "no."
We are contacted again and again and asked to submit other offers. Once we submit an offer we are told, "oops, someone just submitted an offer higher than yours, we are entering escrow, but if you want submit an offer for the amount we are going in to escrow with and we will put you as "backup"."
We say "no."
The next day we are told they fell out of the escrow and we should submit another offer to be considered.
After more attempts we finally receive a counter offer demanding that if we wanted the place we should give a $3k none refundable down payment; also asking to waive multiple contingencies, one of which being the appraisal contingency, and the counter price is still above asking price.
We tried to negotiate to a more reasonable offer one that even still included a none refundable deposit and the price above asking but it was again ignored.
After falling out of multiple escrows the property finally was sold but not to us.
