The national mall is a must. If you are visiting DC it is a really cool part of history and a lovely place to walk around. You can make it a few hours, a whole day, or just take a morning jog around the park. There are so many open spaces to picnic or let the kids play. The National Mall is a must-visit for both locals and tourists to learn American history. Exhibits, monuments, and Smithsonian museums showcase historical facts from early European settlement on the eastern shores, post-Civil War Reconstruction, world wars era, Civil Rights era, Asian-American wars era, women's suffrage, modern history, and contemporary history, art, and culture. The National Mall is over 1,000 acres of greenspace, museums, gardens, sculptures, and iconic landmarks all in the heart of downtown Washington D.C. Situated along the thoroughfares of Pennsylvania, Constitution, and Independence Avenues and all cross streets in between, The Mall is open 24/7 with exception to closed door museums. On a beautiful day, the area can seem like a paradise with its ponds, fountains, tree-lined streets, and gardens. Visit during the spring and you can witness the country's most beautiful displays of cherry blossoms and seasonal flowers along the Tidal Basin. At night, the monuments are beautifully illuminated, which can be seen from every vantage point low and high. Much of The Mall's exhibits are best seed during daytime hours. Many of the highly-populated areas are well-lit, however, please be careful as some of the areas around the Tidal Basin, Constitution Gardens, and and Haines Point (East Potomac Park) are dimly lit if not devoid of any lighting at night. However, overall The Mall is generally safe as tourists frequent the area in packs at all hours of the day, but be smart and proceed with caution when walking along The Mall at night. You can spend multiple days just walking and sightseeing along the avenues. A week might be enough time to visit all the major museums. The Mall also hosts many activities and annual events like collegiate commencements, group tours, photography, sports, kite flying, and other pastimes. The Mall is also home to the East Potomac Golf Course and tennis courts. East Potomac Park is perhaps the least glorified area along The Mall, however, it is a great open space for walking/biking, people-watching, picnicking, and dog walking. There are many fields throughout The Mall where locals participate in competitive sports leagues such as VOLO. Often, you'll see large groups playing volleyball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, kickball, football, and even local college teams practicing their water sports along the Potomac River. TIPS: Check the forecast before visiting. Unless you are visiting one of the many museums, The Mall is all outdoors, so ensure your day won't be ruined by weather. Arrive early for parking. You can park along Pennsylvania, Constitution, and Independence Avenues, however, pay close attention to and adhere to parking signs. I recommend downloading the Parkmobile app to pay for parking. If strictly walking around the mall, I recommend parking along a main thoroughfare and walking along the perimeter of The Mall. There are private food and ice cream trucks along The Mall. You can also find refreshment stands and gift shops in and outside of museums and monuments. You'll also find street vendors selling cold soft drinks, water, and ice cream. Bring cash to limit credit card exposure to private vendors. Public restrooms are strategically situated throughout The Mall. I recommend packing hand sanitizer and toilet seat covers if for nothing more than when using the restrooms. The restrooms are generally clean during the winter, however, during the summer when increased tourism outpaces the area's cleaning schedule, you'll need to protect yourself. A must-visit in DC especially in the spring. Right now, they have beautiful tulips during cherry blossom season. It can get a little crowded and super hot, but it's totally worth it. Just look at the picture! Parking is challenging, so I recommend taking the Metro. read more

I have visited the National Mall several times before but never walked the mall at night before this past weekend. What amazing views we found by moonlight!!! We started our visit by stopping at the Jefferson Memorial which is bit farther than the rest of the mall...sort of behind or in front of the Washington Monument depending on your vantage point. From up in the memorial you will find breathtaking views of DC. We decided to check out the new National World War 1 Memorial next which is also a bit off the National Mall...a few blocks to the left or right depending on your vantage point. This new memorial is well planned. We headed back to the Mall and visited each stop along the mall and then retraced our steps back to the Lincoln Memorial to walk along the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. It is a nighttime stroll everyone might consider taking at least once. read more

When in Washington, D.C., if you get a clear sunny day, take advantage of it and head out to the National Mall and visit all the wonderful monuments and museums. On the better weather days, we stayed outside and focused on the monuments and everything to explore outside (less of the museums). We were recently in Washington, D.C. over the course of two visits and seven days and went to the National Mall three times. There is absolutely no litter anywhere, the place is spotless, no pan handlers, no homeless, and a high feeling of safety. Grass was also recently replaced in major portions of the Mall and it looks immaculate. A really great experience for families and also quite dog friendly. When we visited, residents were taking advantage of the unseasonably sunny and warm weather with flag football, volleyball, and other cool games on the fields around the Washington Monument. Visiting the Mall at night (after sunset) is also a must and a unique perspective as all the buildings/museums are light as well as all the monuments and Capital that are viewable from The Mall. read more

The National Mall is waaayyyy better at night. The monuments are all light up and it becomes tranquil in comparison to the day time. For me, it became a time of reflection. Walking between the illuminated Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument under the stars felt surreal. The Reflecting Pool mirrors the lights perfectly. The sounds of the city fade, replaced by the sound of the fountains. I just strolled along and occasionally looked up remembering that the sky is one of the only things all of us for centuries will have in common. The National Mall at night is a must-see. I walked 10 miles around the national mall when I visited Washington DC. Most museums offer free admission, but even if you don't explore a museum, you can admire the sublime architecture and gardens that span the mall. Definitely a must-visit spot when in DC. read more

One of the highlights of DC. A huge park that runs through DC. The mall is lined with museums for you to checkout, as well as most of the monuments the city has to offer. The National Mall is fascinating. I had a jaw dropping moment at every single monument. It's the feeling of knowing how much history each monument represents, combined with the ability to stop and stare at the beautiful architecture that crafted each one. I really enjoyed noticing the differences as I walked through the entire mall. It was awesome. Not to mention this is a fantastic way to exercise. It probably took 2 hours start to finish. This a beautiful piece of America's property. On this sunny spring day it was very busy with dog walkers, tourists, bicyclists and locals. Many were headed towards the Tidal Basin. If you are visiting our Nation's Capital, Washington DC, the best way to explore this beautiful city is by train and walking. In the past I had also rented a bike and that's pretty lovely too. There is so much to see and so many wonderful monuments, museums, memorials, parks. The National Mall has a lot of historic sites and memorials my favorite is the Abraham Lincoln memorial and the views reflecting the Washington's monument over the water. What is there really to say about the National Mall? It's the center of many historical and cultural points of interest. There are all sorts of historical events that are tied to this area. You're going to cross paths with it at some point during your DC visit. I just don't think that a visit to our nation's capital would be complete without taking that long & brutal walk in the heat of the summer, or even in the chill of winter. Our happy place is when we finally get to the comforting shelter of a museum. There was construction at the east end in front of the National Museum of Asian Art. It kind of obstructed that nice view along the mall to the United States Capitol. It's usually a great view. Other than that, it was exactly the same as every other visit, but with more beautiful Smithsonian gardens spaced out in between museum stops. It's always a memorable visit no matter what time of year that we choose to visit. Just be aware that the concrete sidewalks, monuments, and buildings make it feel so much hotter than what it really is in the summer. Do wear comfortable shoes, and drink plenty of water. There are food trucks all along the mall to purchase beverages if needed. Oh, and definitely be prepared for inclement weather by bringing an umbrella or some kind of disposable rain gear. The map makes the National Mall look small. This greenspace alone covers over 1000 acres which includes the Tidal Basin and the memorials surrounding it. There's plenty to see for a 3 day adventure. The national mall is exactly as you would expect: a wonderful place to see Congress, the Washington Monument and several Smithsonian. You'll often see people playing sports on the field or just having a picnic. I've found that it's an excellent place to go for a run as a woman - at night, the lamps keep the place well lite and there's almost always people around you so it feels very safe. I enjoyed being close by and regularly ran here after work: the sunset is gorgeous. For tourists: there are no restaurants that are super close by - though there are things a ~15 minute walk away. It is lined by food trucks, but the food trucks are incredibly overpriced (it does not help that they do not show the prices on the trucks). An ice cream cone at certain places can set you back $10, which is just way too much for mediocre ice cream. I'd strongly recommend walking to Gallery Place (~15 minutes) and grabbing something there. read more

You can easily immerse yourself in all the monuments, memorials, and the multitudes of various museums. And all the museums are free entrance! That's right, free! D.C. is rich in history and gorgeous. Grounds are beautifully maintained, landscaped, and so green. Picture perfect, many opportunities for photos . Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes cuz you're going to be puttin in some serious steps, at least over 20,000 lol You're best bet for parking - park at Union Station- super easy and affordable. This trip we visited the Washington monument, Lincoln memorial, WWII memorial, White House, Capitol, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Museum of American History. One can see from the eastern end of the domed US Capital that the White House is to the north. Along the National Mall, you can see all the museums and nearby the Tidal Basin reservoir that is known for its blossoming cherry trees. This is a fantastic place. The reflection pond is pretty in all types of weather. It's the center point for most of the major historical sites. Of my visits to Washington DC, I have been to the National Mall twice. Gorgeous awe inspiring monuments and sightseeing. But also, the two times I went, it was later at night. I did that so I didn't have to deal with large crowds. It was a very peaceful walk from the National Monument over to the Lincoln memorial. It wasn't too late, so there were actually quite a few other people walking around at night so it didn't feel dangerous at all. A bonus is that it's also walking distance from the Martin Luther King memorial and other iconic buildings and memorials, etc. Especially from the point of view of an out of town or or tourist, I feel like this is a must do when visiting Washington DC. read more

No trip to Washington, D.C. is complete without a visit to the National Mall. In his 1791 plan for the future city of Washington, D.C., French-American artist Pierre L'Enfant envisioned a garden-lined "grand avenue" approximately 1 mile in length and 400 feet wide, in an area that would lie between the Congress House (now the United States Capitol Building) and an equestrian statue of George Washington. Mathew Carey's 1802 map is reported to be the first to name the area west of the United States Capitol as the "Mall". The name is derived from that of The Mall in London, which during the 1700s was a fashionable promenade near Buckingham Palace upon which the city's elite strolled. Today the National Mall is administered by the National Park Service as part of the National Mall and Memorial Parks unit of the National Park System. The park receives approximately 24 million visitors each year. My family and I recently visited the National Mall while we were on a short vacation in DC. Although my wife and I have visited the Mall multiple times, this was the first visit for our two sons. Along the approximately 310 acres that the park covers, visitors will find the White House, the United States Capitol Building, several Smithsonian Institution buildings and museums, the National Gallery of Art, gardens, and numerous monuments and memorials. Some of the most well-known memorials include the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial has been my favorite for as long as I can remember, but I also have a soft spot for the Korean War Veterans Memorial. I highly recommend seeing the memorials at night! There's something about the way the light and shadows hit the latter memorial that give it a sense of eerie realism. read more

We walked the entire mall starting from the Smithsonian area to the Lincoln Memorial... fun walk and lots to see and take in. There are several vendors along the way selling icecream, burgers, falafel, etc. There are plenty of electric scooters along the way. It is really hard to order rideshare - Lyft and Uber, so make sure you map your walk in advance and find your pick up location in advance. The bathrooms are not clean, so plan ahead. There was an exterior bathroom adjacent to the reflection pool and one inside the Lincoln Memorial that was disgusting beyond words. The National Monument is breathtakingly large with lots of photo ops all around. The Lincoln Memorial was my favorite stop.. we had a sleeping baby so we couldn't make the hike up the steps but there is and elevator to the bottom left (facing Lincoln). Once you enter the elevator area there is a mini-museum in that area... lots of pictures and history of the memorial- I highly recommend stopping by this area. I kept this stop at the Mall short and sweet and I absolutely loved it! read more

Here lies the heart of the nation's capital! You can find awe-inspiring monuments of U.S. presidents, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and memorials all within walking distance of each other. Highly recommend visiting the memorials in the evening, because it amplifies the visual grandeur and heroic atmosphere! There's also a large park where many visitors come to relax, exercise, and play.  In spring, blooming cherry blossom trees envelop the Tidal Basin - A marvel I've yet to check off my own bucket list! Surprised to find a Yelp page for this! I only have two words for you for your next visit to the National Mall, ELECTRIC SCOOTERS. We scooted around the entire area and were able to see all of the major structures and monuments within only hours. There are public scooters and bikes everywhere. I can't recommend this mode of transportation more. I guess this review is more for the scooters than the actual mall itself. The area is pretty cool too. read more
