I was excited to re-run this race (this time doing the half instead of the full), but in terms of organization, it was a big step down from last year. Not all of it was the race's fault, because it seemed like DC either would not or could not provide the same level of support as last year. One of the big sticking points was the metro. This year, it opened at 6 am, exactly one hour before the race started. However, not only was the first train late, there were so many runners trying to get on, that an entire train passed before I could even step onto one. Then, there was a backlog as runners got off at the Stadium/Armory stop, so I definitely missed the gun. It's ironic because last year, I drove, and parking at RFK was its own nightmare, so this year, I thought I'd save time if I took the metro. Nope.
The mile markers were incredibly hard to spot. The first one I saw was at the 10-mile mark, even though I KNOW there were others. They ran out of Gu at every station, and many times, Powerade wasn't ready when I got to the drink stations. At the Finish Line Festival, there was a huge bottleneck to get bagels, soft pretzels, bananas, and water. No chocolate milk when I got there, but I figured because I started and ended so late, that was kind of reasonable. But here is what was NOT cool. I understand that many people who work races are volunteers, but you must be strict on some things with runners and their friends/family. I saw multiple runners/spectators walking off with CASES of yogurt. There was definitely no yogurt when I finished, yet when I got on the metro, I was surrounded by people who were bragging about how they had made off with so much free stuff. You jerks, did you ever think that maybe because of people like you, other people would not get any? Ugh, race organizers, please regulate! When I was a volunteer at the Beer Garden for the Marine Corps Marathon, I definitely stopped people who tried to carry off 6 beers at a time. That is NOT cool.
Also, the swag was really barebones this time around. Aside from some EVOO and balsamic vinaigrette, there were no Gu samples, power/granola bars, chocolate milk, etc. There was also no wraps, only one small pain treatment sample, and the technical shirt was thinner and uglier than last year's.
The Expo was also a lot smaller this year, with many fewer vendors offering not-so-great discounts and deals. All in all, I was really disappointed with this race. read more
