You probably wouldn't expect someone to be hella proud for coming in 13,947th place, but man am I proud! Given it's a race of 31,000 and I didn't train *at all*, finishing without a broken knee was more than I expected, and having not walked at all and coming in at a respectable 10-minute mile pace was icing, sprinkles and candles on the cake.
There's always gotta be a little awkwardness to every race. When I ran the Honolulu Marathon, the runner finishing immediately in front of me was in a head-to-toe furry reindeer costume. Yes, I got beat by Rudolph. And during this race, my first Army Ten Miler, I got beat by a guy playing a flute...while he ran...the entire ten miles. But this flutist was my hero. He kept me going from mile three to mile six with his enthusiastic playing. The Army Song was my favorite number, though he mixed it up with other patriotic toons and some classics like It's a Small World and If You're Happy and You Know It. Had I kept up with him a little further, I'm sure he would have started serenading me:
Run, run, run, run
Oh runner, don't you dare slow down
Go longer, you can last more miles
Push harder, you're almost there now
So go runner, make this flutist proud
And when we're done
You won't be able to feel your legs
And when we're done
You're gonna need bengay all over you, lady
You can't stop there
Finish line's all the way at the Pentagon
And you're almost there
You can do it, I believe in you, Soldier
So close from here
Runner, I'ma be your motivation
Run, run, run, run
Motivation
Run, run, run, run
At this point I suppose I would have turned into Lil' Wayne but then the race probably would have ended quite differently. Instead, I did without my Motivation and endured the last four miles, passing the Washington Monument, circling the Department of Agriculture, and the final uphill mile, alone (albeit still surrounded by 30,999 of my best friends), before finishing the race back at the Pentagon where we started. Unfortunately, there was one thing worse than nearly turning into Lil' Wayne: there were no bananas at the food tents. Packaged muffins and bagels were the only options, though sliced bananas and oranges would have been my preference.
Many thanks to all the volunteers, particularly the ones liberally handing out bottled water in the finish chute. Many congratulations to all of my fellow runners. And a special thank you to Justin, the best cheerleader and gear holder Brianna and I could ask for! read more
