Stopped in here while visiting the Botanic Gardens. It started to rain and we needed shelter, so why not shelter in a place that service wine and food? We did a quick tour of the museum upstairs first, and then went downstairs to the food and wine area. My wife and I ordered the charcuterie board, and then got a card for sampling wines. Each of us sampled small amounts of about six different wines. Very simple and tasty process. Kids ordered food as well, and seemed to enjoy themselves. Service was super friendly. The young lady had just moved to the area, but you never would've known that by her demeanor. Would come back again.

I'm lucky to have gone to quite a few events at the National Wine Centre, I'm even more lucky that they've all been free. It's honestly one of the best event venues I've been to because it's an interesting space and has good food (It is beat by a Sony night at the Adelaide Zoo because...well they had Pandas). There are a few special events that the Wine Centre holds, like their wine dinners, uncorked evenings, and meet the maker sessions. They're all a chance to find out a little more about wine, to enjoy a chance to socialise, and to just have fun. Then there are the things you can actually do at the Centre, like taking a walk through their displays, eating at the cafe (something I'm yet to do, but I have eaten a 5 course meal at a Wine dinner and it was delicious), or take part in one of the many tasting options. One of these is the chocolate & wine tasting with chocoMe. I got to experience a special media night at the Wine Centre recently, while the set up was different the chocolates and wines are the same. They're gorgeous and delicious. And I'm getting side tracked. As I've mentioned before I've also been to the wine centre for other events like product nights, and it's a good venue if you're planning your own events. I'm yet to spend a dime here, which is just lucky for me, but I'll be brining my sister along for a chocolate & wine tasting as soon as she's back from a holiday.

Very beautiful facility mainly for the neat architecture that makes the place resemble a smashed wine barrel from certain perspectives. The inside is a little like a mixed bag. There is a vast walkway up to the exhibit space on the first floor where you have an interactive exhibit that attempts to show you all you need to know about wine making in a very limited way, but it tries. There are short films, squeeze and sniff spots and a big bar for wine tasting. The wine tasting happens between 10am - 5pm and if you call ahead you can arrange it with them and get a little extra special service. They are closed Good Friday, Christmas and New Years Day, but the rest of the time they are open. You are able to pick up a brochure that directs you through a self-guided tour experience, and given the amount of detail imparted to you at your own direction, it is best to give yourself a good hour to wander through if you are interested in the whole subject of wine. If you just want to taste it - give yourself ample time for water and coffee afterwards. This space is a free Internet WI fi zone, and there is a nice cafe with some outdoor seating, but the glare of the sun in the afternoon on a hot day makes it a bit of a heat bucket so be warned. The inside is like a wine cooler, the outside can be hazardous to your health. Having said that I love the facility as a space where you can hire the banquet hall and throw a shin dig. Check out the menu. I have attended a couple and loved the feeling. It's not like being in Adelaide at all.

A cool looking building, resembling a wine barrel, this function and wine centre is very nice inside and out and is located amongst the Botanic Gardens. I have had a few work functions here and the catering is amazing, the food and wine service are right up there with top class. The waitors all wear white shirts, ties and black pants and hold their hand behind their back balancing numerous wine glasses on a tray. They offer wine education courses, wedding venues, banquets, an exhibition and a cafe. Definitely not for a budget though, but well worth the money.

But after a few minutes of good service and chilled out vibe I was able to relax. The place to be on The Parade is thanks to that A-Team the Trims family, who are also responsible for the equally buzzy Sparrow and The Manse. All the carry on and hoo haa about this place I reckon is well deserved, coming here is a unique experience and there's nowhere else around quite like it. You get a little drinks card to hang onto so you can order ten dollar glasses of wine and pricey food without having to actually think about how much you're paying. Last time I came here we had fries, which come out on a wooden block with an accompanying bowl of 'aerated ketchup,' which was absolutely delicious. They appear to be fans of aeration, there are also donuts with aerated chocolate sauce, and scallops with aerated almond cream. We all know how Adelaide folk like to get all worked up over new things, and I reckon this place is worth the hype.

Giallo Wine Bar - Nice outdoor area

Giallo, you had me at writing "please consider sharing all dishes from entree to main," on your…read moremenu. For someone like me who gets serious food envy, this place is the place to take any friend, lover or family member who selfishly only ever wants to keep their dish to themselves. Why? Because you can say "well the menu recommends we share..." Giallo Wine Bar has recently been taken over by new management, who also owns Greenway Gallery next door. The setting is intimate and small and the outdoor area would be beautiful in summer. I'm not so sure about the random art pieces in glass cabinets around the restaurant but never mind you'll be too distracted by the menu. Whenever I dine out I try to pack in as many experiences as possible to my meal. As a result I will normally order 3 glasses of different wines rather than a bottle to share. Again, this place is a perfect setting! Go in, say what you feel like and the waiter will bring you something new and different to try. They have an amazingly diverse wine list that doesn't just stock from SA - that excites me. Their share plates are not big, but the richness and intensity of flavours mean that 3 or 4 plates + a salad for 2 is plenty. My favourite dishes were the scallops with a white bean puree and crisp pancetta or their Gawler River quail with caramalised pear and sherry vinegar. The blend of ingredients meant there were many oo's and ah's had with each bite. Service was wonderful and very efficient and there was never a moment our wine glasses or water was empty. Don't be on a budget when going here and please don't complain that the meals are too small. Sharing is caring people and stop being a greedy guts!

I had no idea as it is only stairs downstairs and it's not a raging nightlife area, particularly for younger people. The Norwood scene is a little more casual, up market and quieter. I usually only go there for tea and the movies, not to stay around on weekend nights and party. But a wine bar is a cool idea, especially on a great corner in the middle of The Parade. I have been to Maxims for a party function or two, and they were pretty good. It's quite cosy so feels full and you don't have to move around too much. The bar is big enough, with ample staff to keep up with the demand. Maxims has a small outdoor balcony area (very small), and it can be closed off so almost be indoors. But only 4 or 5 people will really fit out there. There are toilets, lounges, TVs and lights to make it perfect for a function. The one thing I find funny about Maxims -there is an obvious stripper pole smack bang in the middle of the dance floor area, which is always the centre of attention and the feature of many photos.

The manager was really helpful and she settled for a Friday night as it was less expensive (still pretty pricey to hire though!). There's a $30 cake fee if intend to bring your own and they do provide finger food which will be brought around by one of the employees throughout the night. You can play your own music and slideshows too. I didn't talk to the manager personally, I just remember seeing him talk a bit rudely to the bartenders and it seemed a bit unprofessional. The woman behind the bar was lovely and joked around with us. It was a young girl's first shift and she was really lovely too. The only things that were a little off putting were: a) The very obvious stripper pole which is placed in the middle of the room. This wasn't mentioned anywhere. My housemate wanted 'classy' and with the fluro pink lights which outline the ceiling on half of the room, it brings the class-o-meter down a little! and, b) Because I'm vegan, my housemate asked them to make something vegan for me and they agreed. When I asked on the night, they said no one had told them! My housemate definitely did, so we were a bit annoyed about that. Luckily the spring rolls turned out to be "accidentally" vegan, so I didn't go home too hungry! My experience wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. With what my housemate's parents paid to hire the place, I just expected it to be in my top 5 at least.

Actually, this place goes beyond decent to actually having a number of not too common South Australian beers, so I can definitely work with that. Decorated with a twist of "Where the Wild Things Are," Howling Owl has managed to create a cafe and bar setting that could have you sitting back and watching the world go by for hours. Their Adelaide map tables are a beautiful touch and if you sit and while away the time here you will notice the intricate attention to detail that has been put into this place from the owl calendar to the Cry Me A River painting above the bar. The Friday and Saturday night drinks list is bias towards South Australian beers and wines and how could you fault them on that? Meanwhile the only spirit served in the bar is gin. And in my humble opinion I can't see why you would ever drink anything else. The selection of gin and cocktails on the menu have clearly been created by a keen gin lovers hand and I'm looking forward to/hope they will offer *cough cough* gin appreciation classes or opportunity to tell you about gin behind from behind the bar soon! Don't let just the eye catching cabinet of sweets and savouries from Steven Ter Horst, "Abigail" and Willabrand distract you. these guys also have tasting platters they can put together for you and cheap as breakfast treats under $10! Gold. Once people catch on that this place is here it will be huge. Dont't miss out on bandwagoning early!
