History

Established in 2009.

Over the last 20 years, many voices have called for a foundation of support for Native arts and cultures in the United States. Demand is urgent as elders are passing away before their traditional knowledge, cultural practices and artistic traditions are shared with younger generations. The Ford Foundation responded to this call, conducting a deep consultation and research process in the early 2000's. In response to this feasibility study, the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation was incorporated in 2007. It opened its national headquarters in Vancouver, Washington in 2009, and in 2009 began its first grantmaking cycle to support Native artists. Today the NACF has supported over 200 artists in 30 states and the District of Columbia.

Meet the Business Owner: Lulani A.

Lulani brings over 30 years experience to the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation. A Native Hawaiian herself, she worked in Hawai`i with Native Hawaiian organizations in the nonprofit, public, and private sectors. She was instrumental in developing the first for-profit subsidiary of ALU LIKE, Inc., the largest multi-service organization in Hawai`i serving Native Hawaiians. With a strong interest in leadership development, she created the Hawai`i Leadership Center. Holding a second degree in drama and theatre from the University of Hawai`i, she has performed and participated in stage productions, television shows, and film projects. Arts and cultures has always played a strong role in her personal life and professional development, and she greatly admires her grandmother who was an accomplished musician and singer.
