I kind of think of Natural Food Patch as my Vitamin and Health Food Store. I can't say I can buy everything I need here, but they do have a big selection of the healthy stuff. If you need vitamins, herbs, Whey protein, for any reason -you will find it here. And you'll also find a staff that can help you pinpoint what you need. I'm not one to go for the veggies when I can get really great produce just down the street, but they get points for trying. There are plenty of products on the vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free wave around here. Yes, it's generally a bit packed, but folks are friendly and you'll leave with whatever you came for -and then some. read more

Natural Food Patch was one of the first stores that I would frequent for vegetarian food selections some years ago. And even though it's been 6 or so years, and I now live in Washington, DC, Natural Food Patch is still the best for certain health products. As many of the other reviews indicate, as far as produce is concerned, they do not have much. But where they do shine is their general offering of vegetarian meats, soups, etc. They offer many products that I have never seen elsewhere, and really given the size, their prices are very competitive, better than Whole Foods on many. NFP is fine by me. I'm not really into supplements or vitamins and I don't prefer their grains or produce, so I only really come here for the giant tub of Earth Balance spread, Oskri Dark Chocolate Coconut bars, and Snap Pea Crisps. Fortunately, that isn't very often because I get pretty impatient waiting in their usually slow check out lines and dealing with the horrible store layout. I will say that I would not consider the patrons "stinky ghetto herbalists" like one reviewer (side note: when did being mean and maybe racist become so cool? oh wait, that was 5th grade.) I'm surprised to see such indifferent reviews about this store! Yes, the isles are a tad narrow and that being said, it can be quite a issue when shopping there during high traffic times, but the store is set up in this fashion to provide customers with more organic and fresh products! I truly enjoyed the customer service I received when I was there, and I was able to get everything that I was looking for. if youre looking for a wide Tulsi tea selection, they definitely have it. I adore this store for several reasons. For starters, and most importantly, they are the BEST one stop shop for organic and holistic goods around. They pack a lot into a pretty small space, so it can sometimes get a bit claustrophobic. I don't think I've ever been there and not said "excuse me" at least 3 or 4 times, trying to squeeze by somebody. Second, they have terrific prices (almost always cheaper than Whole Foods, my main source for groceries) and they have the best rewards club I've ever seen. If you join their "Carrot Club" (free!), every time you spend $40, you get a stamp. Ten stamps gets you $40 in free groceries! I honestly don't think this can be beat. At Western Market, just down the street, you also get a stamp every time you spend $40, but you only get $5 worth of groceries after your 10th stamp. At Whole Paycheck (a store I love and frequent, but let's be honest, they are robbing people), there is NO reward program. Third, the best place around for any of your holistic beauty, vitamin and supplement needs. The best I tell you! I get all of my vitamins and skin care products there because they have the best prices. For example, their Aubrey Organics skin and hair care products (which they have the whole line of practically) are typically a little less expensive then if you bought them directly from the Aubrey Organics website. Their price on Sambucus is $8 less than at Whole Foods, and the savings go on and on. The only area they are really lacking in is produce. I go to Western Market for that. They do have some, but it doesn't always look super fresh and it's very limited. If you're there getting stuff for a recipe, you are likely to be able to snag what you need without a problem, but there isn't a lot of variety and I don't count on them to have what I need. Other than that, I love this place and it's easy enough to get my produce elsewhere. The Patch is my first choice for vitamins/supplements, skin care, lentils, ginger chews, and tea (the tea wall is amazing). It's my most convenient place to pop into for recipe needs and essentials like canned tomatoes and chicken broth. Even if it's not super convenient for you, it's worth going a little out of your way for the prices. read more

Ill start with the good things. It has a lot of organic items, hard to find items such as real salt and gallons of apple cider vinegar. They have a greater selection of natural and organic food and body care items than other area grocery stores. They also carry local Michigan made products such as ferments from The Brinery. The bad, they could have other things that I have never seen because it is near impossible to traverse this store. If two people have carts in an aisle they cant get by each other, someone has to back out of the isle in order to let the other pass. Or, you can be the person trapped in the middle of the aisle by two clueless people on either end. The shopping experience is so bad that I now buy 5 of everything that I need in order to cut down on the frequency of times I need to come here. The Vitamin and Oil section are massive, it takes up a good portion of the store. It is not my thing but might be worth it for someone interested in that. If I could actually browse around the store I would probably buy more things here, instead I just stock up on things I am unable to find anywhere else. read more

I enjoy the inventory here and support as many health food stores as possible, but that's about it. It's always cluttered, chaotic, messy, and stressful. I avoid going here as much as possible. I really wish they would get it together because they do have a nice selection but it's just an unpleasant experience every time. Sigh. read more

This place is so strange. The aisles run every which way. It's always busy, which is a good thing, but you do have to walk in circles to get to something because two carts won't fit down the aisle at the same time. Prices are decent but seriously, hearing anyone say that this is where they buy their vitamins/supplements makes me feel like I am privy to some big secret. I never, ever pay these prices for vitamins. Ever. While I like to help local businesses, I also like paying half the price for CoQ10 or Vit D3. Shop online folks...really. The produce selection isn't all that great but the tea selection rocks. They do carry all the beauty products I love from Alba and Avalon Organics but, again, most I can find online at various reputable sites for 3-4 dollars cheaper. Don't go if you get uncomfortable in tight spaces or get offended by being stared at. Not the friendliest staff, nobody says hello or will even look you in the eye as they pass you in the cramped aisle but maybe I'm just not "hip" enough. Ah well. NFP (or Natch Patch, as I like to call it) is the closest thing we have to a food co-op in Detroit. You can't do all your shopping here (produce section is pretty weak) but if you buy your veggies from the farmers' market, this is a good place to get most everything else. The prices are the cheapest around for all your hippie essentials (kombucha, non-dairy items, nutritional yeast, tea...) and they have a decent selection of bulk items. Ask about the Carrot Club Card, where you get a $40 gift certificate after filling up your punch card. Others have complained about the customer service, but I have never gotten anything but good attitudes and smiles. That said, I only come here when I have a weekday off of work; the aisles are very narrow and the store is tiny so during peak shopping hours it tends to be a madhouse. I can see how every route through the store being jammed up with shopping carts could grate on a hurried customer or employee's nerves. read more

There are some things that Natch Patch does that are top notch, there are other areas that are really disappointing. Their natural beauty products section is amazing. I could spend over an hour just looking at their soap selection if I wanted. I get all of my shampoo, and skin products here. It is the only place a have been able to consistently find Mayumi Squalane which is a Japanese oil that I use as a facial moisturizer. The price is great too, it is cheaper here than what I see it listed for online most often. If you are looking for holistic medicine, they have a great selection. When I have asked a floor person for advice on what to buy, I have gotten very well informed answers. I don't necessarily use holistic medicine exclusively, so sometimes I don't know what to buy and I've gotten some stellar recommendations for products for cramps, colds, etc. Here's the thing though, staff for the most part isn't that friendly. Bob, one of the floor guys is always a pleasure to deal with, however people at the counter always seem to just be punching the clock, and biding their time checking you out, and swiping your card. This is fine, I guess. But, I really mean it just like that; fine, I guess. I get the feeling that while this is a local business aimed at providing wares for the crunchy "all one" crowd, perhaps their business philosophy doesn't reflect this. Some employees have been there for what seems like forever, but I've noticed them melting away over time. People want to feel appreciated, and this makes them feel more connected to their work. I have a feeling this is lacking on the back end, given conversations that I've had with past and present employees, as well as what I've seen as a regular customer. Seems like a total shame to me. Lots of potential for this in a small business in a community like Ferndale. Not saying it has ever stopped me from going there, because I really enjoy what they have to offer, but it's always in the back of my head. I'm sure they do a decent job of offering fare, and livable wages while staying true to their bottom line. Its just that some things are about more than your monetary compensation. read more

i love this place! there is a great vitamin and supplements selection, great tea selection and the body care offerings is really good! some really cool soaps, natural remedies and a small grocery section. I was excited to find that despite being small {for all that they pack in the space!} it is a well rounded store - there is also a nice organic produce section, groceries and a frozen area. there were some things that i found here that i haven't found elsewhere (teas and bodycare) .... the prices were average and the staff was nice. it's a really nice option for a neighborhood store. a great place to get things that you need daily. love it. read more

A decent sized health food store in Fabulous Ferndale! Their produce is all organic and the prices are very reasonable. Much cheaper than Whole Foods for similar or same brand items. They also carry a lot of Worthington vegetarian/vegan items. By no means a one-stop shop but good enough for a neighborhood store. If you spend more than $30, ask to join the frequent buyer club. read more

I prefer Wholefoods for certain if not most items... Natural patch does have a bad return/refund policy but I guess that is because they aren't a chain. Also I'm not a fan of the staff, they don't seem to be knowledgeable. So overall I like Wholefoods better, if I need something that I already know about then Natural Patch will do if I'm close enough. read more

The Natural Patch is great for pre-packaged veggie food, bath products, and homeopathics/vitamins/herbs. I think they have the lowest prices for these general sections. The only major down side is that thier produce section isn't that plentiful. You can generally get all the basics though, and all organic. read more

I am going to make this my new grocery store! I love this place. In my opinion it is better then Whole Foods, Nutri-Foods and Plum Market! Unlike Whole Foods all their produce is organic! They also are the only health food store that carry's organic edamame. I have also found they have the biggest variety of Bob's organic Granola. They have a much bigger variety of my staple foods then any other health food store! Another thing I like about this store is they do not sell booze. Which is great for me because I don't drink. Oh ya and I cant for get to mention they have a great variety of cleaning products and beauty products which are environmentally friendly an all natural. That also reminds me that they have better prices then the other health food stores as well. read more

As other reviewers have said, the prices are on par with online stores or area grocers. I appreciate that because I can walk to this store and buy just what I need, rather than take my car to a big box store. I go here for many gluten free, dairy free dry goods, as well as natural skincare products, and I've generally had a good experience. I once bought a moisturizer that I noticed was expired when I got home, and I was able to return it, and show the expiration date. They were very accommodating and apologetic, offering me a swap or a full refund. This is the only hiccup I've experienced. The cashier staff is always attentive, warm, welcoming. Their gluten free, dairy free, organic cereal selection is off the CHAIN. read more

Not much to say that the other reviews haven't covered. The main problem is the small aisles - I was in here in the middle of the day on a Monday thinking It'd be a good time to not be crowded - FALSE. It was slammed. I got a few essential groceries for a decent price though. Nothing was super marked up price wise like I expected considering its a smaller business. I'll definitely be back and am very glad its in the neighborhood but it is not a leisurely stroll through the store type place its a "pardon me, oops scuse me, hey i'm just gonna squeeze by ya, sorry!" stressful shopping type place. I love the store. The people are helpful and the selection is item is good for the average consumer. Where could this store improve: the store is tight. If you are a size 14 woman, you will have a hard time navigating around the narrow aisles and the tight corners. It pays to be small to navigate this place. I love that the store is local and located in downtown Funky Ferndale, but I hope the owners are looking to expand because this store is just too small for what they offer. They might want to either streamline their offerings or move to a bigger location. One thing I despise about the area is that now that Funky Ferndale is "happening", finding a parking space during peak times (e.g. 7 PM on a Friday) can be challenging. Also, this store does not carry a wide selection of things. If you need something right away, but you don't care about the brand, this is your place. If you want a specific brand and size, this might not be the place for you -- you might have to shop online. The store layout is kind of weird. Nothing against ADHD folks but just by looking at the layout of the store, I would think that the owners might have a touch of it. I sometimes feel like I am in a maze of sorts. Also, I would like to see registers that scan (that might speed up the lines). Overall, I like the store, but I just find the work of shopping there a bit too much sometimes. May 2017 Well I thought I would give them chance -- big mistake. Same issues: hard to find parking spot, long lines, slow lines, over-crowded, cramped store. There are reasons I like ordering my supplements online, so I won't have to deal with this blzarre store. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I paid for my bill. I gave the cashier, a man, $20 for my bill of $6.54, he gave $3.46 in change. I said, I gave you a $20 bill. He then calmly gave me the $10 additional he should have given me in the beginning. He never apologized for his mistake. If I were not paying attention, I would have been out of $10. It was like I foiled him plan to get $10. read more
