If you enjoy nature and the sweet sound of rushing water, then this is a place you must visit. While I was taking in the sounds of the birds, frogs and rushing water a Great Blue Heron gracefully glided past me and landed in the water just at the base of the water fall. While I was watching him he was surely watching, waiting for his dinner to come flipping over the falls. A place where the water, trees, birds and fish come together in harmony.

The Shad Factory Pond is one of my favorite outdoor escapes to visit. Wonderful place to go, walk…read morearound, admire the beauty that is the countryside, clear your head, and learn a little bit about wildlife along the way. No real parking in the area, just pull your car off the road in the dirt/grass. The Shad Factory pond is a fresh water pond, containing a dam and waterfall with a large amount of greenery to go along with it. Within minutes of stepping foot on the shore you are surrounded by tall plant life, flowers, dragonflys darting around, lilies sprouting up out of the water. Absolutely beautiful! One of the most interesting things to see here is the fish ladder that was recently rebuilt in 2007. The old one fell into disrepair (as it had been originally built in 1911). A fish ladder is a series of, in this case, concrete steps with rushing water that lead from the Palmer River up to the pond itself. Rehoboth is home to one of two remaining American Shad runs in coastal Massachusetts. This fish ladder allows eels, trout, herring, and you guessed it. . . shad to swim upstream to the fresh water pond for mating season. Prior to its being rebuilt, the fish population had sharply decreased. The address I posted is not specific to the pond itself but gives you a general idea of where along the road it is located. As it is October and Halloween is fast approaching, I will mention that this place has a bit of a ghost legend associated with it. Though I have never encountered anything during my time here, there are many reports of a man in dark clothes appearing and vanishing in the surrounding woods along with strange white lights and overwhelming feelings of terror. There is much that is offered to people from guided tours to a masterful museum in an effort to take it all in. I think of myself as extremely lucky to be here and have a great deal to consider about the area and how gorgeous it truly is here. The museums and all the areas where people are there to instruct are just priceless.

He directed us downstairs, where we watched a movie that informed us on the topic of whaling and how it was important to the town of New Bedford. I didnt know much about either before, so we found the film informative. It even kept our 7 year old occupied! They had a few exhibits to look at and an activity for kids to do. Overall, it was a good experience. I know there is more whaling-related stuff in town that we didnt get to, but Im not sure if its part of the NHP or not. If you're in the area and looking for something to do, I'd check it out.

The monument is a scaled-down recreation of Ponta Delgada, the largest city in the Azores islands. On the Fall River replica, the east side of the monument has the Ponta Delgado seal at the top, while the west-facing side has a three-dimensional representation of the Fall River municipal seal. There is a plaque at the base, "These 'gates' symbolize the friendship between two sister cities. Fall River and Ponta Delgada. Reaching across the Atlantic, to share their cultures, their hopes and the dreams of their people. July 22, 2006. Edward M. Lambert, Jr. Mayor." There is also a second plaque that commemorates the visit of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic on June 22, 2007. The three-arched monument is 60 feet tall and was completed in 2006. Almost half of the population of Fall River claims Portuguese roots, according to Census Bureau data. Visited the Newport Mansions for the first time during the holidays to see all the beautiful lights…read moreand decorations!!! I visited The Breakers and The Marble House (third mansion is The Elms). Each house was lit up with Christmas lights, as well as a Christmas tree in each room. Also bought tickets to see "The Sparkling Lights" outside on the lawn. The mansions are absolutely grand, elegant, and filled with history!! They all cost money to enter, but there is a free audio tour for each one (bring a headset). I loved learning about each one! Short and sweet summaries of each room as you walk through the houses, with the option to listen to extended versions (for you history lovers). Each mansion has parking close-by (although the website claims you can easily walk from one mansion to the next, they are quite far, especially in the winter). I stopped in for a simple day trip, but lots to see and eat in Newport if you have more time! Another tip would be if you're there to see the Sparkling Lights, earliest admission is 4:30 pm, make sure you're in line by 4:15 pm (it gets long FAST)!

This might be my first canal review. The Cape Cod Canal is around seven miles long and transects…read morethe neck of Cape Cod. Two roadway bridges and one railroad bridge cross the canal, ensuring that people headed out to Falmouth and Provincetown can get there easily (or you can take a ferry/MBTA boat from Boston). The first attempts to build the canal did not take place until the late 19th century but they did not begin excavation until 1880 but that effort failed. The final start was underway in 1909 and completed in 1916, with a final push by the US Army Corps of Engineers widening it to 480 feet in 1940. The canal has service roads on both sides with access for fishing. It's completely level and ideal for skating, biking or just having a really nice walk along the canal. I purchased the membership last November and this was the second time I've visited the Breakers the…read morelast 6 months. I love having it because you don't need a timed ticket then and can visit at any time with a guest, so as an historian, I love it. The Breakers is probably my favorite of the mansions to visit, it's so big and expansive and beautiful. Every room you walk into, your jaw just drops a little more. I think my favorite season to visit is around. Christmas, but visiting now in spring and summer it's still really magical and beautiful to see. The library is probably my favorite room here, the light green is just gorgeous. Make sure to give yourself a good 20 minutes in the gift shop too, it's very expansive.

The mansion itself is beautiful. The artwork is stunning, the interior is incredibly well preserved, and the ocean views are amazing. But still, my walk in closet and bathroom is bigger than their bathroom/closets, so take that, Vanderbilts! The admission price was very high. And really, don't these guys have have enough money already? And after all that, but I was a little disappointed that visitors are only allowed on the first two floors and the basement. It would've been nice to see the upper levels as well. Thankfully parking is free but the lot is relatively small considering how many people visit. Overall, I'm glad I visited. The history, architecture, artwork, and views made it a worthwhile experience and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Newport.
