The first thing you notice when you enter the store is that everything is hodge-podged together- the "shelves" are the type of shelves you put in your basement or shed to store boxes- definitely not what you'd use for a store display. Good quality sketch pads and pens. My major issue is the attitude of the owner. The owner of the store took every opportunity to speak poorly of the newly closed art supply store that was next door. The owner worked there for many years and opened this current store after the other store closed. When I walked in the first time, the owner was in the midst of a conversation with a customer about how "crazy" the former store owner was, etc etc. That customer left and I was the only one in the store. Since I live in the neighborhood I asked her questions about her new store- I didn't know she had any ties to the former art store in the same shopping complex, so I got to hear how awful this other owner was, how she wanted to overcharge her for everything, etc. I came in again last week to grab a sketch pad and it was the same story- I could hardly believe it. All this effort and breath wasted to put down a business that doesn't even exist anymore. I was so off-put by it, that I didn't even buy the sketchpad. As a business owner in Frederick myself, I think it's pretty easy to assume that we should all play by rule #1: do not speak ill of others when representing your business. Period. I don't know the history between the two women, but that doesn't matter to me- it's just bad business to speak poorly of others. She could have taken the opportunity to explain how she was going to do things differently, what she will carry and her hopes for the store, etc etc- instead she decided to take the low road and insult a company that is out of business and of no threat to her store. While there aren't too many places in town to purchase artist supplies from an independent dealer, I won't be shopping here again.

MICA - Maryland Institute College of Art is a strong arts college that is often beneath the radar…read morefor many locals. But they have a strong multi-building enclave only a stone's throw from Pennsylvania Station, Baltimore. The MICA store is for the art students. Although stores like Utrecht carry some items, the MICA store has some unique items. The poster art for instance sold at the store features designs from the Globe Poster business which MICA purchased in 2010 when the Globe went out of business. In the pre-social media days when flyers advertised music acts, The Globe Press had clients like Tina Turner, James Grown, The Temptations, etc. who would call in orders. Some of that poster art lives on at the MICA Store. The store also carries some cool books and gifts that I have not seen at a Utrecht's. And of course, like any university, the MICA Store sells cool t-shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, and bags with Maryland Institute College of Art's distinct logo. Definitely an interesting stop for anyone with an interest in art or design.

This company is going out of business and having a sale to reduce their inventory. I placed an order for purple tile and was sent a pale green tile. I sent a polite inquiry that it seemed I had been sent the wrong product. They asked me to send a photo of what I received, so I did. At this point, Kathy told me I "must be color blind", they don't even sell a light green tile like in the photo I sent (although she went on to describe said tile so she was obviously familiar with the light green tile). Kathy was very rude and I asked if they didn't sell me this green tile, then who put it in the box and shipped it to me? Either way it wasn't the purple tile I had ordered. I gave them 3 options for resolving the issue. Replace with correct product, refund, or replace with another purple tile similar to what I had ordered. Kathy responded that since I did not want to resolve this issue (!?) she was just going to refund my money. Below is the purple tile on their website that I ordered, and the pale green tile I received. So no, I'm not color blind.
