Located in a neighborhood once…read morecalled Black Wall Street, it tells the story of the brutal Tulsa Massacre where the White community killed and destroyed a historically Black neighborhood over a misunderstanding. The museum does a superb job of talking about what led to the massacre, what happened during, and after. At the end, it invites you to play an active role in reconciliation. The museum cost $15 for adults and gives discounts to students, the elderly, veterans, etc. Once inside, you'll watch a short video before exploring six galleries. Each one has a mix of photos, videos, artifacts, and more. They also warn you of any sensitive material like a KKK gown.

People from all over the globe stop in by the dozens, hundreds, and even thousands per day. There are photos, videos, and exhibits to immerse oneself in the history and the pathway forward.

They have a lot of different fitness classes to choose from including dance options (line dance/swing dance). Their schedule also includes social activities, education program, holiday and special events as well as open gym and weight room. Their schedule is Monday to Thursday: 7 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Friday: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. If you are interested in the Line Dance classes, they are every Tuesday, 6-7:30 p.m. The Swing Dance classes are every Monday, 6:30-7:30 p.m. They are each $5 per class. Tae Kwon Do classes are every Saturday, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. That's $10/month! Sometimes they have an indoor marketplace which is a great way to make some extra money and find some great bargains. They also have outdoor facilities which include a pool, lighted tennis courts, multi-purpose ball fields, picnic tables, and play areas. The main reason why I like Lacy though and why I bring people here is to show the 60-foot "Black Experience" mural by artist Felix Cole. It's amazing!

Taylor Hanson started it in 2014 after being inspired by U.N. Ambassador Edward J. Perkins (he oversaw the end of South Africa's apartheid government and the release of Nelson Mandela while serving as the US Ambassador to South Africa). They host mobile food events and foster the return of permanent grocery stores and healthy food systems. Their monthly Community Events bring together partners, health resources, and have a pay-as-you-can model for fresh produce and prepared meals. They make it fun by having local DJs, food trucks, art classes, and more. They also have community gardens and teach an afterschool program in schools focused on teaching innovative urban farming systems, like hydroponics. I'm super excited for them to build their Food Home, which will be a community space with a market, urban farm, and food hub. I learn so much about the importance of micro greens and sustainable food practices from them.

Tulsa's newest YMCA is officially open! I've been looking forward to this location since I heard…read moreabout it in November. It is an impressive facility on the west of Riverside. There's a beautiful mural on the east side of the building. As soon as I walked in, I was blown away by another colorful mural of a soccer player and a floating ball installation. It is called "The World in Play" with each ball representing a country with an active YMCA soccer program. This location will feature three indoor fields, but right now, only the soccer one is fully finished. To the left, there's a cardio circuit training with state-of-the-art equipment, including two curved self-propelling treadmills, which engages more muscle groups and mimicked a more natural running motion. Next to the circuit, there are restrooms, showers, lockers, and a local soccer jersey collection. To the right, there's a meeting room and "The Hive", an interactive obstacle course that seems super fun for kids (ages 8 and up). It has climbing ropes, ball obstacles, game targets, and a scoreboard to play games. On the second floor, there are more cardio and strength equipment. There's an age limit to go upstairs (15+). To join, they don't have a joining fee. Membership prices are available on their website starting at $28 a month. Nearby residents get a free memberships.

Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory) is a nonprofit in Kendall Whittier that provides access to…read moreadvanced manufacturing and digital fabrication tools, equipment, technology and resources. If you're ever curious about checking this makers space out, they have tours every Saturday at 1pm. It's an amazing facility. The building opened in 2022 and it was made just for them so it's a huge upgrade from their previous location, where they were for 11 years. They now have an open floor plan with high ceilings and lots of natural light along with 20+ machines available. From laser cutters/engravers to water jets and 3D printers, the resources they offer are mind blowing. Fab Lab Tulsa is one of 1500+ MIT-chartered Fab Labs in 90+ countries and the first in the southeastern region of the U.S. (that's right, not even Dallas has one). Aside from the studio on the first floor, they have a metal lab and a wood lab, each with 10+ machines available. Both labs have a minimum age and require PPE to be worn at all times. The second floor has classrooms and a conference room. They have a membership model with lots of options depending on how many hours per month you'd like to have as well as what room. The pricing starts at $39 a month, which sounds like an incredible deal since you get to use machines that are $30-60k. Classes are also available for signup on their website along with education programming for kids. They have a couple of workforce initiatives as well. This is a huge asset in our community!
