The problem: At the end of July 2013, I developed neck pain that radiated down my right side. My…read moreright shoulder, arm and upper back area were affected. There was numbness and tingling along my right arm to my right hand. I had four sessions of physical therapy and did the recommended exercises daily. I only noticed a slight improvement. It was still too painful for me to work on a computer, drive a car, ride a bicycle or surf. I visited a physiatrist and had a CT scan. The CT scan showed that I have bone spurs and narrowing of the C3-C4, C5-C6 and C6-C7 vertebrae. In addition, I have a "broad based disc bulge" in C6-C7. After months of little, or no improvement in my situation, I made an appointment with Kristine for massage therapy. On October 24th I had my first treatment. After that first visit, I felt relief from the pain that I'd been experiencing. My back, shoulder area and arm were a mass of knotted muscles. Over time, Kristine gradually worked on these areas and loosened the tightness. After each visit I felt better and better. The pain eased up, the numbness disappeared and I was able to resume all my normal activities- pain free! Kristine is very well trained and knowledgeable. From the beginning, I felt comfortable with her working on me and I had never had any kind of massage previously. I continue, and will continue, to see Kristine to remain pain free.

Beyond great, Dr. Zhao healed me of two major problems when we were both in Ithaca. Western…read moremedicine elsewhere (these 2 are trained to US standards in addition to traditional ) had given me useless inhalers. Then, a professor referred me to Dr. Zhao and her sister who together got me healing. Later, on crutches for months, I was treated by them with immediate results. I'd go across country for treatment by either sister. Some office visits required more time and more approaches, but the visit cost the same regardless and was reasonable for me, a grad' student. Their philosophy of healing, their approach with patience and dignity, is healing in itself. Lighter story: Once, they gave me herbs to soak and drink for a nasty cold. Next visit, they said: "You're still sick! You didn't take your medicine!" "How did you know I didn't?""Because you're still sick!"

Dr. Zhao is a compassionate, highly trained professional! I highly recommend her. I have gone to…read moreher for about 8 years....it is just so healing for me. If you are reading this....you might be in pain, frustrated, weak....wondering why you are "stuck." If you want to try accupuncture, you need to know that Dr. Zhao was a top medical doctor in China and has over 20 years experience here, even teaching at a nearby chiropractic school. I would really recommend a real Chinese person, especially a doctor for this type of medicine....she can give you so much background that westerners cannot. This is not western medicine, this is a different culture/philosophy, so please acknowledge that. She works by herself and does everything herself; she has no receptionist to answer calls or do paperwork (this lowers the office rates). So chances are when you call her, she is currently working. It is easier to ask your questions and understand the treatments either by going to her website or stopping in, if you can, to ask her. She has a strong Chinese accent and it may be harder to understand over the phone. The best part is, when you come to her, you have her all to yourself for at least an hour, usually $65.00. Insurance doesn't usually cover accupuncture....but think of it, an hour for consultation and treatment....so thorough. You can talk to her about anything you want, she has so much experience, so many suggestions and will customize the treatments to YOU. She also can provide herbs and supplements fairly inexpensively. She is one of my favorite practitioners of all time. She is super patient, knowledgeable and very supportive. You may or may not "feel" immediate results after your first visit: please don't give up. This is a process that involves much more than just showing up and getting needles....it is a whole philosophy (including nutrition, sleep, relaxation, allergies, etc) to help your healing journey.

My eye specialists wanted to do a fifth surgery. I decided to try something different. Because I was constantly suffering with headaches, nor did I have vision in my left eye. A good friend of mine and my sister recommended I go to acupuncture. After coming to Gang Acupuncture Clinic, I've gotten some of my vision back. I can read some of the chart. The condition was very disorienting and disconcerting. My footing was unstable and I couldn't drive. Since the diagnosis was that it was a nerve problem, I consulted with Dr. Gong. She said it was an unusual problem and made no promises, but said that she would be willing to give it a try. After nine appointments with Dr. Gong between late April and early June, the double vision disappeared. When Dr. Gong started her treatments, we decided she should work on two other problems also. First, in Sept. 2006 I had torn a ligament in my right ankle. I had gone to an orthopedist and physical therapist at the time and done the exercises they recommended. The ankle improved, but never felt quite right. Since Dr. Gong has been treating the ankle, it has noticeably improved. Second, in July 2023 I was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in my neck that caused considerable pain around my left shoulder blade and discomfort down my left arm to my hand. I had three months of physical therapy and took Gabopentin for 2 1/2 years. The shoulder blade pain went away and the arm discomfort lessened, but residual discomfort remained in my left forearm and index finger and thumb. Since Dr. Gong has been treating those areas, the discomfort has lessened further.

I gave my acupuncturist in San Francisco 5 well-deserved stars, but she cannot hold a candle to Dr…read more Wang. Dr. Wang was a teaching physician and medical administrator in China prior to opening her practice in Ithaca more than 20 years ago - first in a tiny suite at the Boardman House by DeWitt Park, then in the DeWitt Mall, and now at the Integrative Medicine Center. When I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, Dr. Wang got my symptoms AND labs under control before I could even get an appointment with my endocrinologist. When I had debilitating sinus infection after sinus infection last fall (I'm still not used to the dry air in CA), I had acupuncture with Dr. Wang every day for a week over winter break and it completely broke through my pattern - I haven't so much as gotten a sore throat since then and I've been breathing better than I have for a long time. She sees patients for all sorts of conditions, but she's really known for her fertility work. She's constantly being invited to baby showers and birthdays. Which brings me to the main reason she's such a great doctor - she absolutely loves what she does. She cannot bear to leave Ithaca for very long (even for trips to China) because she loves seeing her patients and really wants to make sure every patient is cared for. Also, she's helped write the national board exam for acupuncturist, given classes for continuing education credit for other acupuncturists, and has served on who knows how many boards relating to acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Dr. Wang probably one of the most knowledgeable herbalists in the US. She is vice president of Blue Light, Inc., another locally owned company down on State/MLK street, where she consults with acupuncturists and herbalists all over the country to develop case-specific formulas.

Though formal at first, she is very concerned about my health, and got me off of a cane, something my surgeon did not expect. She trains me to take care of myself, and is always thoughtful about explaing what the issues are and how she is treating them.
