The name on the sign says what the shop deals in, but on this small parade the shop has developed into a convenience store too, selling tins of potatoes, tuna and beans, packets of pasta and jars of jam. They also sell a range of mobile top-up cards from companies like Lebara and Lyca Mobile who offer cheap calls to overseas as well as to customers calling the same network. They have a bargain bin of short shelf life chocolate and I could do with some fuel. Wispa Gold isn't at the high end of the nutritional scale, but at 50p for two bars, it's what I want now at a price that's right.

Anyway, both the lollipop lady and the lady behind the counter were very friendly, so it was a good sign. They seemed very concerned that I wouldn't be able to carry everything (I already had 3 bags of fruit - rather than being incapable of carrying a pint of milk and a chocolate bar) and the shop itself was very clean and very tidy - which makes looking for things much easier. There didn't appear to be many little newsagents like this in this stretch of Cotteridge - which surprised me - so M Y News is probably doing a good trade, even though it's only a small shop. And good for it, is what I say! It's clean, it's friendly, it's well laid out and well-stocked. That's pretty much all you want in a local shop.

However, I'm pleased to say that M Y News is none of the above things. The shop is small, but does a surprisingly good range of wares, such as sweets (many of which are very rare to find in many other places) and crisps. I've been served by the same friendly women every time I've been in, and she always makes shopping there a delightful experience, very chatty and asking how your day is going. There are a fair few competing businesses in the local area of Cotteridge, but if you're going to choose somewhere for a quick snack or somewhere to get a newspaper, I'd highly encourage you to support this excellent independent local business.

To me there was nothing unique about this shop but what makes it stand out is that there are no other local news agents. So it's ideal to pick up a news paper, chocolate bar, magazine and/ or drink whilst you're shopping. They also have a wide good selection of products. As you may know Acocks Green is a large residential area. I think what would make Raza news stand out from its competition is having a small selection of food such as fruit, and drinks and possibly sell stamps. I thought the owners were friendly as they gave a good greeting when I walked in. The prices are cheap, which is great for everyone who wants to save money and especially as I am a student.

If you aren't aren't old enough to find yourself in a qaundary about this kind of thing, then rest assured that another bonus of this shop is that they have a range of sweets from just 10p, and drinks that are much cheaper than the Victorian Tea Rooms in Kings Heath Park opposite.

A good selection of magazines and birthday cards etc that I would actually consider buying (corner shop cards are normally so bad). Always has milk, a range of bread and the local papers. His prices are not too far off the supermarkets so you don't feel like you're getting stung too much. The guy who owns it is very friendly and they are open nice and early for emergency milk runs and hangover breakfast ingredients. It's used by all the local residents and sits opposite Kings Heath park, perfect for an ice cream or cold drink in the Summer. Rehman News saves you from having to hit the High Street to pick up your local paper and although I might struggle to isolate it's one great achievement other than it's location, it does an ample job of serving this neck of the woods.

The DTF Asian Books and Musicals shop is not the biggest book store but there are so many books of different genres/religions to choose from.
