Gluten-free granola is a highlight. This is the first totally safe açai bowl I've had in Canada…read more They use a coconut rather than oat base, so for all my oat-avoidant celiacs out there, this is a pleasant surprise. It's definitely worth considering taking home a bag of this granola. The predominant milk they use in their lattes is oat (gluten free), but alternatives are available. I've tried a couple of the mushroom lattes, and the Chana Charger is my favourite. The lunch bowls are predominantly gluten free or can easily be adjusted to be so. The produce is always fresh, which allows natural flavours of the ingredients to really come through and make their dishes stand out. The location on 104 St is very accessible from downtown, but if you drive, expect to pay a couple bucks for street parking. With an order at the till and sit anywhere system, it is an accessible place to go on your own and/or get some work done. There is also plenty of space to go with a group or meet for coffee. It was a bit pricey, $22 for my açai bowl and latte, but you definitely get what you pay for. And that's what keeps me coming back!

Happy to see Kb & Co is open and running full force. I decided to try the tumeric toona sandwich…read more At $14 it is on the pricier side but the quality is quite good. Vegetables are fresh and it comes with a side salad. The only tiny thing is the toona idea. While I completely understand simulation is quite difficult this sandwich had no similarities to Tuna. I think it should move away from simulation and make it there own. Either way, delicious!

If you visit SUB, you would see the usual establishments like Subway & Edo at the food court but…read morethat's not the case for Juicy. They are located by the elevators near the bookstore, hidden & quiet from the chitchatting of students. They have a decent selection of smoothies along with paninis, ice cream and sandwiches. I decided to give the Berry Forever smoothie a try. Unlike Booster Juice which blends in the juice & sliced fruit, Juicy has it mostly premade, only needing ice before going into the blender. Aside from that, my drink turned out to be pretty good, not too sweet or sour, just right. There's not a whole lot of seating from a couple tables inside and in the hallway but it is a nice hangout place if going with your friends or classmates. Prices at Juicy are reasonable and definitely a cheaper option than the numerous Booster Juice's on the University of Alberta campus.

Juicy was one of my favourite places to get a snack on campus when I was there. You might not have…read morenoticed it even if you spend a fair bit of time in SUB, since it's around the corner away from the rest of the food court. Juicy's main thing is smoothies. To be honest, I haven't tried too many of them, because my absolute favourite is the Breakfast Smoothie. It's got your standard smoothing ingredients (orange and banana in this one, I think), but they also add a scoop of oatmeal that makes it taste like you're eating an oatmeal cookie. I love it. They also have sandwiches and soup, making them one of the better lunch choices in SUB.

I've visited this coffee shop a couple times over the years, most recently in August between plays…read moreduring a pre-Fringe preview performance at the Roxy Theatre down the street. It's always kind of surprising that a large, cozy independent cafe like this exists on this part of 124th street, which gets progressively seedier as you travel north towards 118th Ave. My theatre-going companion and I ordered a hot chocolate and a coffee respectively, both of which I'd grade a B-. Not spectacular, but very good. In addition to my coffee, I ordered a slice of some sort of delicious-looking berry and graham cracker square from the cooler filled with trays of individually-wrapped treats, But looks can be deceiving; I bit into it and was greeted with a flavour reminiscent of the post-flood smell of the elementary-school art projects my mom had saved in a box in the basement. Closer inspection of the square revealed large spots of mold that had obviously had at least a few days of time to settle down and procreate. In retrospect, I should never have ordered a saran-wrapped pastry from a huge pile in a shop that can't possibly move more than a handful of them on a regular day. For this particular area, the Sugar Bowl is still your best bet, but if I were to visit again I'd steer clear of the pastry case.
