    Bay Creek - Nature preserve

    Bay Creek

Bay Creek is absolutely beautiful. It's a hidden gem on the Eastern Shore for sure…read more It's just outside of Cape Charles - a charming little historic town loaded with shops, bakeries, and friendly locals. It is renowned for it's fishing and oysters as well as now, it's ice cream and various other tourist-friendly pursuits. It exists in harmony with nearby Bay Creek, an exclusive golf-centric private community which has brought in plenty of transplants from around the state and various other states. The grounds of this community are stunning and immaculately maintained. It boasts several pools, a large fitness and members club, tennis and pickle-ball courts and many planned improvements as the community continues to grow. Additionally, there is, of course the famous 27-holes of golf with views of the Chesapeake Bay and water while you're on the range. It can't be beat. It's probably half-half at present with full-time and then those with second and rental properties here which they rent out throughout the year to visitors. It's in the midst of a huge boom for building and development as COVID has brought in plenty of people who can now telework from this area. A few years ago 9 of the holes were removed to create a large nature preserve with hiking and walking and biking trails along the protected marsh land. A beautiful addition to this neighborhood. If you have a chance to tour or play golf in this gorgeous resort - do so! It's something you won't want to miss.

What a disappointment! We bought here during Covid and were so excited by all of the momentum and…read moreactivity we saw here. New management promised us new facilities, new club, new indoor pool, improved golf course, better amenities, and the list goes on. What a huge LIE! Buyer Beware!!!!!!! The golf course has gone down horribly which is hard to understand as they have so many dues coming in now. The beach is eroding away quickly. Half of the back 9 that we thought was a nature conservation preserve is actually future development. The other half could become a mitigation bank. The developer maybe called Preserve Communities, but thousands of trees are being slaughtered to clear for new duplexes. The land is being raped for the profit of the developers and no one cares about the home owners once they have bought their lot. The last straw is a controlled burn that is scheduled for this week. The property manager sent out a flyer on surviving wildfires that recommends masking and air purifiers to survive the controlled burn. So there you have it. Far from perfect nature we are all about surviving controlled burns.

Deer Cove Golf Course - Club house

    Deer Cove Golf Course

If you're a novice player and have access to the base this is a perfect course for you. Not only is…read moreit quite forgiving due to the lack of obstacles it's one of the most tranquil courses I've come across. That's because it's on the water, located on a base with very low activity, and there are no buildings or housing close to the fairways. As it turned out my wife and I were one of only a handful of players on the course the Saturday we played. Needless to say the only noises we heard (other than our teeing off) was the wind blowing through the trees. Perfect for teaching a new golfer. We actually found this course while searching the Swing by Swing website for military bases we hadn't played in Hampton Roads. Otherwise we never would have found it. Ranges: The driving range is directly behind the small clubhouse with about 8 to 10 covered and matted stalls that allow for up 250+ yard drives. However the course manager said we could move off the matt and onto the grass if we wanted to tee our drivers as long as we weren't creating a hazard to others. Since no one else was on the range, that's exactly what I did. Like the driving range the practice putting green is only steps away from the clubhouse and just as it is on the course the flat and well maintained. Clubhouse: Small but has everything you'll need. Restrooms, balls, tees, course apparel, snacks and cold drinks, including small liquors and of course beers. There is also a table to eat or just have a conversation with the staff or friends. Fairways: Except for one or two all the fairways are straight with very little obstacles and little to no slopes. If you're a low drive that has a tendency to bounce as it makes it way toward the green then you'll love playing here. All the fairways were well maintained surrounded by generally short vegetation, tall trees and no water obstacles. Greens: Medium to large in size, no slope (that I can remember), and only a few bunkers making them quite merciful. Service: There was only one staff member during our visit but he was very knowledge on the course, friendly and quick to get us anything we needed. Overall: We really found Deer Cove to be a very relaxing play. I'll definitely be back especially if I'm golfing with someone that's new to the game as there's so few players on the course we won't have to worry about backing anyone up. Still taking into account the relative ease of the course and the distance from VB/Norfolk/Chesapeake I can't give this place anymore than an a 2 Star rating.
