This review is for the rooftop restaurant. I saw they had a lobster roll and a portion of the sales were getting donated to a fundraiser. I don't remember which one. I asked the friendly bartender if the lobster roll was warm or cold. She said it was warm. Well, lesson learned. A warm lobster roll in Sydney is not the same as a warm lobster roll in the states. I was given a lobster roll that was warm, but with dollops of Mayo as opposed to warm drawn butter. The flavors were decent, just not what I was expecting. It came with fries and a small side salad. Fries were nice and crisp. For my drink I ordered a whiskey ginger. I ended up having two more as I was enjoying the view from the rooftop and spending time with friends. I was charged a different price each time for the same drink. Not sure why there was inconsistency. Still a good spot! read more

We visited the Taproom on the ground floor of the New Brighton Hotel on an October Wednesday for lunch and a beer. Only about 10 groups seated so it was relatively quiet except for the pop music that was playing at an acceptable level. The many TV screens qualify this as a sports bar, but the sound was mercifully muted or at a very low volume. The bar was decorated for hallowee We ordered at the bar and sat at a high top table by a window. It took about 15 minutes for our food to arrive, which seemed a little slow given the number of people in the bar. The Wagyu Smash burger was served with fries. It was a bit small for the money, but came with an onion, jam and special sauce that were both yummy. The Donburi Bowl with added fried cauliflower. The cauliflower was very good, however, having a healthier grain such as quinoa, brown rice, etc. would have been better than the included white rice. Shocking experience at the hands of immature, poorly trained staff members. On Saturday afternoon I went to this hotel to meet with a large group of about 15 friends - all adults over the age of 40 yrs, to enjoy cocktails at sunset. We'd enjoyed our first cocktail when I went with my friend to purchase our 2nd cocktails. As we approached the bar, we were told by a young bar tender to come down to the other end of the bar (there was nobody else at the bar at this point in time). My friend asked why, and he said because that's where he was going to serve us and if we wanted to be served, we'd have to come down there. I later realised that this had just been an immature power play. But despite the bartender's demand coming across as extremely abrupt and rude, I still wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and assumed there must be some valid reason for this seemingly rudely delivered demand. We placed our orders and whilst we waited for our drinks to be made, we watched as others arrived at the bar at exactly the position we'd been standing originally and placed their orders with other bar tenders without being asked to go elsewhere. When he came back I said loud enough for him to hear that I might make a complaint about this bartenders attitude and politely asked him what his name was. He said it was Aiden. We paid for our drinks and left, but on the way back to our table my friend suggested that he may have given us a false name. I decided I'd go back and take his photo to be sure our complaint was accurate. Seconds later, I was approached by security and told that I'd have to leave the premises. I thought at first he'd made a mistake and was supposed to approach someone else. My response was surprise as I asked why. He told me that I was intoxicated and abusive to the staff! I was shocked! I've never in my life been asked to leave a bar and drunken abusive behaviour is certainly not part of my persona! My response was that he couldn't possibly be serious, as it was obvious that this was just not true. He told me I had 5 minutes to get out or he'd call the police. To which I responded that he should do just that. Then it would have obviously ruled out intoxication at the very least and no doubt the Police would be able to see for themselves what sort of people we were. No, it was obvious to all of us there that it was just a young kid behind the bar who for whatever reason decided he'd be disrespectful to two older ladies who were innocently enjoying an outing with a group of friends and when he saw that we weren't happy with his treatment of us, he'd decided he'd exert his "power" by concocting some nonsense about being drunk and abusive and have us removed. As my friend pointed out, if the bar tender had honestly believed us to be drunk, he should have refused to serve us at all. I understand the fines are $5000 for the individual server and $30,000 for the hotel owner! But he'd served us because he'd obviously had no reason not to.The friends that we were with decided that they didn't want to give the hotel any more custom and we all left and went to the Ivanhoe down the road which as it turned out was infinitely nicer anyway and with live music as well.On the way out, the bartender responsible for this stood at the glass behind the bar that overlooked the stairs to get out and laughed and shimmied and stuck his finger up at us as we were leaving, as did the rest of the bar staff. One of my friends took a photo of this as well! We were all shocked and disgusted at such appalling treatment and it showed that either there was no management at that bar or that whoever was in charge was part of it all. I've read other reviews on this hotel and it seems that "rude and obnoxious staff" is a recurring complaint. We will not be paying this establishment a 2nd visit. read more

We were in Manly for the Australian Open this weekend and after watching the finals needed some food like now! It was a gorgeous day with thousands of people on the beach. Grabbing a meal without a wait was going to be pretty difficult, but somehow we stumbled up to the Rooftop Garden Bar at New Brighton Hotel. It was practically empty. You have a great view of the shopping strip and views of the beach. We were able to steal a table large enough to sit 6. The décor is gorgeous. Fitted out with high tables, lounge beds, wicker egg chairs and clean and trendy furnishings. The downfall of the Rooftop Garden Bar unfortunately, is the food. There were two options on the menu for vegetarians... nachos or roasted vegetable salad. I chose the latter. The veggies were seared which was delicious, but the bed of dry spinach was inedible as someone didn't wash the leaves and each bite felt like kitty litter. I also couldn't eat the salt stick, I mean halloumi. The husband is a burger enthusiast so . that's what he chose and the patty was clearly frozen/packaged meat... no texture and the chips were mealy an unsalted. The New Brighton was a well established pub before it closed for 18 months for renovations. The infamous Shark Bar was a favourite hangout for the eighteen year old crowd (particularly boys), they served teapots and the DJ would actually let you request songs (uncommon in Manly). Now it has finally reopened I can't say I'm impressed with the results. I think the overall idea was good but due to development problems the final product was rushed. It looks nice from the outside and even inside the ground floor but once you get up to the first level things start to get weird. Ground Floor: A casual standing place with stools where you can look out onto the Corso during the day. The basement toilet downstairs from here is one of the most horrifying places I have ever been though. All the bathrooms are bad. 1st Floor: Casino carpet and some nice lounges, the rest is disjointed wooden and plastic stools of different heights. The large black stool serves as a table (I assume) however it isn't level so all the drinks slide to the middle. From certain seating points you also risk being blinded by laser lights from the dance floor. The balcony and indoor lounge sections are nice, the carpet is tacky along with the staff uniforms...hello bra flashing singlets and outfits made out of wetsuit material with zips down so cleavage can be on ample display. The bar also takes up half the level...who designed this place? 2nd Floor: The DF level. What can I say...it smells to high heaven. It has achieved a similar odour to the old Shark Bar however much more pungent and noticeable. It is something of a musty/BO smell...quite indescribable but vey persistent. It is dark up here and the dance floor is reasonably sized. The bar is again in the middle and taking up lots of unnecessary space. It is also cash only...not good for the drunken kids that want to shout random strangers tequila shots but have used up their budget for the event. There is an ATM on the level but that isn't much help when you've ordered a large round of drinks. 3rd Floor: The rooftop. This was a genius idea....however did they stuff it up so badly? Again the bar takes up half the room and the balcony is only slightly larger than on the other levels. Yes, there is trendy and impractical chairs on the balcony. Yes, they do cocktails but often run out of ingredients. Yes, they close early and push you downstairs to the smelly level. Key Failings: Let's Get Down To It The Bathrooms: never cleaned, no handle on the door for your bag and the toilet paper is behind you and high up. How coordinated do they think drunk people are? Also the decor is mismatched...the sink is nice but the toilet doors look like public toilet ones...go figure. The persistent cleaners are not much good at restocking the toilet paper and the sink often floods or is drenched in water. Same with the floor...I never look too closely. The Stairs: Or Should I Say The Queuing System? Now stay with me. The line from the first floor to the 2nd floor (smelly level) uses the same stairs people take to come up from ground to first floor. Therefore there is always two queues of people trying to pass one another. There are also people coming down from level two to level one at the same time. Not only is it dangerous it requires a bouncer at all times of the evening to ensure ground floor patrons don't bypass the level one queue and go straight up to the dance floor. And also...to prevent people from falling upwards, downwards and backwards. Drunk people aren't the most steady of foot you know. The ridiculous thing? There is a perfectly good set of stairs that could be used for a queue between level one and two which would avoid the whole intersecting hoards of people bizzo. Overally I don't GET this place. What were they trying to achieve? It has flashes of slutty, casino, cushy lounges, too cool/weird seating, pub uncleanliness and dance floor sweatiness. Yes...all I can say is it is I am perplexed. It still gets a queue but it is slowly dropping off. I only come here if I have to. read more

Shark Bar in the New Brighton Hotel is probably was the Hotel is most popular for on weekend nights, and its really only as good as you make it. Shark Bar, or 'Sharkie' as it affectionately known as to those who have just turned 18, could be a great bar but its potential is lost with the horrid stench that occupies the third level of the New Brighton Hotel. The music is generic top 20 what's hot right now and the drinks are pretty average for Manly. If you're out for a big night and just want to get absolutely loose then you'll probably have a great time at Shark Bar, but if you're a tad more conservative and prefer for your senses not to be assaulted upon entry, I'd recommend elsewhere. read more

The first time I visit this pub I had ordered my beer only to discover that there was another beer on tap called a 'Millenium Falcon'. I kicked myself for not checking out all the beers before I made my order, so the next time I was in Manly I returned to this pub just to have a glass of Millenium Falcon - and it was no longer being served. I looked all over this pub and simply could not find it. Despite them dropping the Millenium Falcon (probably because nobody drank it), I quite liked this pub. They regularly change their craft beers, and will even have an opening night dedicated to a new craft beer. There is a rooftop deck as well as a balcony that looks over onto the Corso. However I discovered the problem with eating on a balcony at a pub near the beach, and that is that if you leave your food, even for a second, it will be swarmed with seagulls (not that it happened to me, but it did happen to somebody while I was there, but then again I never leave my table with my dinner half finished because it will have a habit of disappearing). read more

I think it's integral to any business to have customer service skills and on my visit,the front of house not only displayed the complete opposite but ruined my experience within the first 5 minutes, I asked the bartender whether the restaurant was table service, I had to ask him whether there were menus, whether we would be seated. Simple things that I didn't have the answers to. He said something along the lines of "go upstairs and figure it out". My friends all agreed his face, tone of voice and the words he used were rude and unprofessional. I sent a message to let the managers know but no response. The Moroccan salad was bland and lacked seasoning, it was inedible. The wings were ok. Your location is good, it's a pity your staff and food are not. read more

On Anzac Day, I was at The New Brighton with 10 friends. We were there from 12.30pm with the intention of having a great lunch with a few drinks. Yes, we had a few drinks (and only a few as we waiting at the bar forever), and I can't say that I had a great lunch at all. My disappointment lies in the level of service and food. Firstly, one person serving the bar while another person was drying knives and forks in the corner and simply watching the bar queue build and build. Even then, the one person serving was not getting the 'next person' correct and serving those waiting with an approach to who is closest to her. This is why we only had a 'few' drinks. I think we spent more time at the bar 'waiting' to be served vs sitting with our friends and enjoying the experience. Secondly, we ordered our lunch at 1.30pm and by 3.45pm, some of us still had not received our meals. For those that did receive their meals, they were delivered after a 1 1/2hour waitingperiod. And even then, the lobster was dry, as was the chicken. I think the only good part of the meal was the chips. On such a busy day, I would have thought that management would have thought to up-staff. One person behind bar and 2 people cooking in the kitchen is just not good enough in our opinion. Perhaps that's why your venue was at best 20% full. Is it because word is spreading that the service and food are poor? Generally, it will be highly unlikely that my friends and I will be visiting The New Brighton again. read more

Stopped by the Corso Bar (street level, downstairs) on New Years Day after taking the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly. The day was perfect and it was nice to get away from the Sydney madness. The sign for $10 Veuve Cliquot caught our attention from the street, so we wandered in to satisfy our thirst and take a break from being tourists. Decided to start with a beer and some food and save the champagne for dessert. I was craving pizza and noticed the NBH Pizza Bar located to the left of the main bar...perfect! I grabbed the BBQ chicken pizza and my friend ordered the chicken parmigiana entree. Both were good and hit the spot. There was nothing fancy or overwhelming about either, but it was exactly what we wanted at the time. The price for the pizza was fine, but the chicken entree was a little steep at $24. Maybe I'm just used to that entree in the states costing far less, like $14. I assume since there is no tipping in Australia, the prices are higher to compensate for the employee wages. The "holiday" surcharge was also something I wasn't used to, but not a big deal. The staff was very friendly, as is everyone in Australia, and very helpful. Many people came by to clear dishes, wipe the counters, straighten the chairs after guests left. The bartenders were so pleasant and great to talk with. Something I sort of miss from years ago before everyone just stared into an iPhone instead of talking to each other. A perfect place to stop if you are on the Corso at Manly. How can you pass up Veuve and people watching? read more

This restaurant is terrible. We waited for 40 minutes for a kids burger and hot dog. The burger came with sauce, which we requested be left off, so my daughter wouldn't eat it. The person who brought our food was very rude when I asked for utensils -- "this is a self service restaurant". Seriously. We needed to cook our food ourselves too... Self serve water cups were all dirty. I finally gave up after trying 5 cups and just used dirty ones. Pick anywhere else. read more

Quick warning about the current security staff here. I was assaulted here last night by a guard working on the third floor near the DJ booth. It was completely unacceptable as I was not doing anything inappropriate. I was minding my own business before the guard proceeded to violently shove me off the dance floor, shoving me through the crowd until he pushed me to the stairs. I was doing nothing to resist his attacks against me however he continued to aggressively shove me across the floor. As I reached the stairs through this assault another guard begun to escort me out. I agreed to leave with no resistance, however upon politely requesting the name of the guard who attacked me and requesting the presence of a manager I was told to leave and not pursue the matter any further. I believe this is completely unacceptable behaviour for any security guard to engage in. read more
