Awesome distillery that definitely warrants a visit. If you're visiting Allagash or some of the other close by breweries, I recommend taking the time to walk 2 minutes and spend the rest of your time here. They make fantastic rye and bourbon (we bought a bottle of the rye for $45) and according to my husband and brother, their Old Fashioned's were some of the best they had ($7). The staff is also incredible- the ladies are not only very well versed on their drinks/liquor, but very engaging and friendly as well. Thank GOD for you, NE Distilling. As a non-beer drinker, I reveled in the idea that your distillery is tucked among all the other breweries. We cocktail drinkers need our fun, too! I absolutely LOVED this little place and would go back again in a heartbeat. For those of you who love gin or rum, you MUST try one of their yummy cocktails. I wanted to dive in and swim around my lemon gin cocktail. And to top it off, the service was amazing- such friendly, helpful people. I love finding things I wasn't looking for... don't you? And New England Distilling - if you aren't already a cool kid in the know - is one of those "things"! When I asked the beau what he wanted to do for his birthday, he decided he wanted to brewery-hop for the afternoon since there are so many local craft brewers in the Portland area. At our first stop (Allagash) we overheard one of the tour guides telling a group of folks from Ohio that they should really check out New England Distilling which was nearby. Like them, this wasn't a place that was initially on our radar because we couldn't tell from their website if they did tours or sampling. Our ears perked up after one of the girls from the group called and verified that not only was New England Distilling open, but they would love some visitors, too. After our tour at Allagash, we headed over to NED just as the Ohio folks were leaving. The tasting/retail room of the distillery was incredibly small (the four Ohioans, the two of us, and the tall man who worked there could barely all fit). But... it didn't seem claustrophobic. If anything, it actually seemed comfortable. The room was warm and simply decorated with awards, ingredients, and the few items they sell). After the folks from Ohio left the man who worked there - Ned - turned to us. You know those people who - when they look at you or are engaging in a conversation with you - you can tell that they are genuinely giving you ALL of their attention? Ned is like that! He brought us out to the warehouse and showed us the equipment/explained the process of how their rum, whiskey, and gin was made. After discovering that we were intimately familiar with how beer was made, instead of forging forward with a pre-tailored speech one might give someone knew to the alcohol industry, it's as though he created a tour just for us in that moment with information that would be new and interesting. We also appreciated the interactivity of his explanations - especially smelling the "head, heart, and tail" of the whiskey! And while there were two other guys running around working, we never felt like we were in their way - they seemed to seamlessly work around the two of us walking around their workspace! Back in the tasting room we got to try the rum, then the whiskey, then the gin. Neither the boyo or I are big fans of gin (because, c'mon!, it tastes like licking a pine tree), but New England Distilling's was unlike any we've ever had before. As in: it changed our mind on gin and later that evening we sought out places in town that carried NED's gin so we could have it in a cocktail. The pours in the tasting room are small, but trust me - you won't need much to be able to tell, smell, and appreciate the uniqueness and quality of the three products they're producing! And Ned? Ned was a wealth of information about everything - how their rum, whiskey, and gin is different from others being created locally; the different bars carrying their stuff and the cocktails they're creating using it; and, about their journey from getting approved at the State board to hiring the third man in their facility a week ago. It wasn't until the very end of our conversation/time at NED that we realized he was the owner. Gotta appreciate that effortless sense of humbleness and his active involvement (I know of other breweries/wineries/distilleries where - even when they first started - the "owner" wasn't involved in the tour process because they were above that) in the growth of - not only the local economy - but the community his distillery is cultivating, too. Go here. Because: yes, they're open; yes, they do tours; and yes, they offer samples. Like us, I guarantee when you're heading to bed and you're reflecting on the peaks and valleys of the day, New England Distilling will end up being one of those places that you are SO HAPPY you decided to stop at. read more

We to were not expecting this to be a stop on our recent trip to Maine. While searching Yelp for brew tours I came upon this distillery. Not ever having been to a distillery and never really having New England style rum we decided to give it a go. The owner welcomed us into his business and provided us with a very informative and friendly tour. After the tour we tasted all three products. The rum was my favorite and also enjoyed the rye. I have never liked Gin but gave it a try and I have to admit it was very good and different from my past gin experiences. He even suggested using it in margaritas. My only regret was I neglected to pick up a bottle. Hopefully you will be in Connecticut soon! read more

My lovely wife found me a Groupon for a tour of their distillery, which included a whiskey stone and a glass. The tour was informative, and the spirits are now some of my favorites. I've been working hard to become familiar with scotch, and their Gunpowder Rye is now one of my favorite drinks of any kind. Additionally, the Gin and Rum are excellent. I'm really glad to see them become part of the local craft distilling family! read more

As an eager but novice whiskey drinker I could not have been more thrilled to happen upon New England Distilling on a recent trip. Like most we were on a brewery tour. One of the first things we learned was that Ned used to be a brewer at Allagash. The sense of community amongst the beer and liquor folks is admirable. We arrived to Ned and his partner hard at work. They happily gave us the most educational and interesting experience that I've had since my younger field trip days. We were there for almost 45 minutes and at the end we tasted the well crafted and much beloved whiskey, rum, and gin. I'll be spreading the word about New England Distilling to my local bartenders and liquor stores. However something tells me they won't need much advertising if they keep up the good work. read more

Such a cute little distillery!! Right within walking distance from Allagash Brewing and several other breweries, so it's worth the stop. They have 1$ shots and 5$ craft cocktails - - can't beat that price!! The cocktail options (3 choices) were unique and delicious (including one hot one!) and the gals working there made it seem like the options rotate frequently and they get quite a bit of creative power to design drinks every day. enjoyed the small tour on a quiet Friday afternoon. We were the only ones for the 2:00 tour, and Matt provided us with our own tour of this small distillery. He told us about the history of the distillery and the process from start to finish of how rum, whiskey, and gin are made. It was a good short tour, and basically takes place in the one room which they are working. You can take a free tour, which includes small samples of the liquors. We got the groupon, which gave us two rocks glasses, whiskey discs (cooling discs instead of using ice), and the tour. If I didn't tour a different distillery yesterday, I would have purchased some of the rye whiskey, which was pretty tasty. I remember Ned from years ago when I took a tour of Allagash, where he was the head brewer, and he gave us an awesome tour back when they were operating out of one room. These guys work hard, have a good product, and are hitting this market at the perfect time as more and more people are enjoying local produced whiskey, bourbon, gin, and rum products. read more
