First off, they carry a lot of local beer and spirits which is critical because it's the best. Second, they have one of those cool walk in refrigerators, if you're into the domestic stuff. Third, you can special order a lot of stuff directly through their distributor. I did this over the summer with Oxbow Surf Melon hose because I couldn't find the beer anywhere and wasn't willing to go to Oxbow itself. They put the order in and called a week or so later when they had it in the shop for me. I went in, paid and was out the door. SO good to know you can do that! To finish off, the biggest lesson I've learned is NOT to drive into Portland to buy new flavors of seltzer at Apres because Hops and Vine will have it! I always go out of my way to go to Portland to get the newest Apres and then end up at Hopes and Vine soon after and kick myself when I see the special flavor I drove to Portland for.

We make a lot of fresh pasta at home, and they always have the freshest ingredients to take our recipe to the next level. For example, many Italian recipes call for guanciale (Italian cured pork), and we could never find it locally until we visited The Cheese Iron. We had to settle for pancetta until we found this gem of a spot. Their focaccia and baguettes are delicious, and their cheeses are always fresh. They also are the only place we've seen locally that carries Lioni Latticini burrata, which is, without a doubt, the best burrata we've ever tried. We stopped buying commercial burrata altogether after trying that brand. Plus, their customer service is unmatched -- everyone is always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Those little (and big!) elements continue to bring us back to The Cheese Iron. I'm so, so happy The Cheese Iron exists in Scarborough.

The good news not only did we find a hard to find beer, Oskar Blues - Ten Fidy, we also found some other gems while we were waiting for the online order to be filled. Imperial Maple Sunday made by Lone Pine and Orange Duct Tape by Stoneface. The checkout process was easy. There was a bit of brief confusion when we arrived. I had placed my order after 8pm and the gentleman running the store seemed confused as he hadn't seen it by the time we came in the next day at 1:30 (they open at 11am). It was fine, because they hadn't sold my pre-ordered beer. It did make me a bit nervous. The experience was pleasant. If there is something specific you are looking for, I would recommend going online first to order, or call ahead. It's a smallish store, so you may have to ask for a special order. The store was very clean and organized and good dates on the beers we were looking at. Also some single cans available to buy - which I love so I'm not stuck with 3 cans of beer I didn't like. I would recommend checking this place out, especially if you are in the area. I will definitely bookmark them as a place to easily order beer online for curbside/in-store(masked) pick up.
