The guide made it worth it. In fact all the guys were great. There is some good information & I love pirates so it was exciting for me. It's not huge, and is outdated - but this isn't Disneyland. So, for the price point I'm not mad. Had the employees not been so great I would've been disappointed. I asked a few questions & was met with intelligence. They deserve props! Buy the pass that saves you 8$, and enjoy the experience. It's not something I'd do more than once, but would recommend to anyone who has an interest in pirates.

Good cheesy fun. Exactly how much fun likely depends on the composition of your group and the skill of your guide, er, captain. Our captain was quite knowledgeable and was able to respond with aplomb to both questions about history and requests for terrible puns. There are a few real artifacts, but mostly staged scenes paired with tongue-in-cheek narration. If you go in expecting to relax and laugh, or if you have young kids, it'll be great. If you go in expecting Very Serious History, you will be disappointed. (To be clear, the history isn't incorrect. It's just presented in sugar-coated morsels.)

Ok, out of the combined tickets that we purchased that allowed us to visit the Witch Dungeon and Witch History Museums all in the same day, this was my least favorite of the three. Why? Yes, the gift shop is lacking compared to all the others, but that's not the reason. Yes, the tour is short, and the museum has a weird smell throughout, but that's also not it. Yes, the entire place needs dusting and a good revamping, but that's also not it. The main reason was the tour guide. He was a loud, deep-voiced lad who did not understand that the tour is not a race. He spoke as fast as he possibly could and took little care in adapting the script to the listener. Meaning, he used a few words that were not understood by the patrons because he did not provide context or definition. Additionally, he spoke so fast that he never took a breath and, therefore, his presentation suffered in the listeners' ears. The museum is good, and the tour is extremely interesting; however, the guide needs to be educated in public speaking skills and how to connect with an audience. But that was just one guide. Therefore, I say go and enjoy; hopefully, you don't get the guide that I had.

How could I, of all people, not go to a pirate museum? I have studied the pirate lifestyle and a few specific pirates for a while now. We had to do this one... We were immediately upsold to 2 more museums (Witch History Museum & Witch Dungeon Museum) both of which (witch?) we were probably going to do anyway. The young man that did the tour seemed well rehearsed and knowledgeable, shared lots of facts as quickly as possible. The scenes themselves are okay, the mannequins could use some work. The overall tour was pretty short I would have loved to see more at the end in a self guided piece showing artifacts from New England pirates, but this wasn't that kind of museum. Not sure it would have been worth regular price. But the slight discount you get for buying all three at once helped.

Great guided tour by a cute pirate. He was very informative and kept things interesting. All the other museums focus on witches and this one is strictly about pirates from the area.

That's me and our guide Tim who just moved here from Millington, TN two years ago with his wife, a native New Englander.

Tim was our guide and he was a hoot. The whole place is really great, especially for us who are ex-Navy and sailboat owners plus I fancy myself a bit of a pirate. My review is a little bit of a bummer because I really had high hopes for this break from all thinks witchy but it was just okay. I have studied a lot of pirate history, watched every documentary that I could find, read Mitchner's Caribbean and quite a bit of other pirate related books and novels so maybe I could have better managed my expectations. However almost all of the information was pretty basic for me and there just seemed and there's so much more historical and interesting material available that was missing. It just seemed to miss the mark and I was left wishing for more. The exhibits were a little hoaky and even my son remarked that it was like a wax museum only missing the good wax figures :-) The gift shop was nice and I had more fun there than inside the museum myself. It's unfortunate that the gift shop was my modt memorable high pont. If your only pirate exposure is the Johnny Depp movies or if you have geniunely curious kids then this might be okay but it's not Disney quality entertainment and it's not in the same league with a Smithsonian.

We purchased the museum pass in Salem that saves you $8 per person. New England Pirate Museum was our last stop and it was refreshing to say the least after doing so many witch activities. The set up of the museum was a bit more sophisticated than the other two witch museums we visited beforehand. You could tell that this establishment put a bit more time and care into their area. Our speaker was mediocre and cracked a few jokes here and there. I like how there's a portion where you can walk on your own and explore a bit. But beware! At the end there's someone dressed as a pirate staying real still but moves just a little bit. My bf was terrified out of his mind LOL! Don't come to Salem expecting some beautifully enriched museum that has high quality. The museum is run down and it is creepy and very old. We just appreciated the history behind it.

We were here on the last day of the Museum's season. We were taken through the tour by Dylan. He was amazingly funny and knew his story well. If you're a pirate officionado then you need to enjoy the stories told. There's some information about a wrecked ship that has had die of its treasure found which is interesting. Yes the exhibits are old but it fun and entertaining. The gift shop had some cool items in it and the guys were friendly and accommodating. We all had a great time.

We got tickets through the GoCity card, and had to make our reservations for a time slot slot the day before. We arrived and checked in, got our sticker, and then waited at a second area to enter the museum when it was our turn. First part of the "tour" was a presentation of the history of the trials with creepy looking mannequins on display. I recommend you sit on the stools in the center of the room for best viewing as you have to rotate around left on your seat to see each display as they are presented. It's actually quite informative but the presentation of it was kind of cheesy to be honest. After that is over, you are taken to the back end of the museum where there are exhibits about how witches are presented in movies (ie the witches of Oz), and defining witch hunting then and now. There's a gift shop for all things witchy at the end.

The only thing I would change is giving a little more history. A lot of the panels talked about theories instead of real events, and also there were a lot of questions that came up while reading. No trial-related activities were conducted in this house, and very few items on display originally belonged to Jonathan Corwin. In messaging Hocus Pocus Tours with a couple questions about the tour and travel to and from Salem, the owner Susan replied immediately and suggested that I call her. This led to a one hour phone conversation where Susan was so gracious with her time, knowledge, and suggestions, not just about how to make the most of the tour, but how to appreciate a day in Salem. I can see why those who had the opportunity to take the in-person tour with Susan really enjoyed it. Covid changed the business model and Hocus Pocus now offers a self-guided tour by purchasing one of two tour apps. I opted for the $19.99 grand tour and it was well worth it. It has 37 points of interest. The app is user friendly and well designed. It provides a map of all stops, tracks where you are, and guides you to the next stop that you select on the tour. When you get to your stop, you can confirm you're at the right spot by comparing a photo of the site with what you see. Then you click on a 2-3 minute audio recording that provides a great snapshot of the significance of the site. As Susan had pointed out to me, there is much more to Salem than the historic witchcraft trials. It includes author Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of Seven Gables, America's oldest candy company, and other interesting sites. Of everything I visited, I experienced a very deep emotional connection with the 1692 Witchcraft Memorial with 20 stones dedicated to each of the victims of the witchcraft trial. The tour includes brief descriptions of some of the victims including those written about in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. If you plan to visit Salem, I highly recommend this tour. All sites can be visited on the outside and some on the inside at no charge. Some sites, such as The House of Seven Gables, charge separate admission fees. If you want to travel to Salem and don't have a car, the ferry from Boston offers a nice, scenic, and entertaining 50 minute ride. The commuter trains run more frequently and can come in handy if the ferry schedule coming or going doesn't meet your needs. There are plenty of good places to dine at to break up the tour. We had lunch at FINZ and really enjoyed it (I'll post separately about that).

I highly highly recommend Hocus Pocus Tours, I learned so much regarding Salem, the witch trials, the history behind the two, and a little bit of Hocus Pocus and Bewitched. So much fun!
