I've always had a funny relationship with this place.
It's nice enough, although you may argue that the bid to impose order and conscious design on a once natural site - complete with signs and notices teaching you to suck eggs - has cheapened the appeal. No, what really puts a crimp in things is its location.
It's just slightly off the beaten track when the larger Sutton Park fans out from the town centre and touches nearly every other ward except New Hall. I'm afraid it's conspicuous by what it's not. It's just a bit 'second division' in comparison.
There are those, though, who swear by it, and enjoy the attempt to reclaim wilder corners for visitors' benefit. Cycling routes, with the intention to ultimately link the site to central Sutton and its park, also get a lot of praise. And any mild criticism is unfair without referencing the site's own rich history, which includes an old water mill which, on select open days during the year, turns once more to make bread in the way Sutton used to. read more
