Our infant son started out as a great sleeper. Then at about 7 months old, he began having frequent…read morenight wakings. I was up with him anywhere from 4-7 times a night. He would wake up, stand up in his crib and cry "mama!". I always had to nurse and rock him back to sleep, only for him to wake up an hour or so later. I was so used to soothing him, and it felt so natural to me that it became a habit and I was afraid it would be extremely difficult to break. This lasted for over two months as I had gone through all the possibilities of why he might be waking...teething discomfort, meeting new milestones, separation anxiety, illness. Near the end of the two month span, he was diagnosed with a double ear infection, but even after it was treated and resolved, to our disappointment, there was no improvement in his night wakings. I was starting to really lose hope, the inconsistent sleep was starting to take a toll on my quality of life and most importantly, my son wasn't getting the uninterrupted sleep he needed. My husband and I knew that something had to be done to get the family sleeping again. This is when we decided to call Jessica Begley, the Baby Sleep Geek. I had heard of her through a Mom group I was a part of and she was also recommended by our son's pediatric dentist. Jessica was easy to talk to and assured me in the first phone call that "this will get better and your son will sleep again". I was taken aback by her confidence in what she could do to help when she hadn't even met or heard our full story yet. In that moment, I felt so much relief that this was the turning point for our baby and our family. After the consultation with Jessica, we had a customized plan, sensitive to our parenting style that was put in place to reduce the night wakings, get our son to learn to fall asleep without any "crutches" like nursing or rocking, and get restorative sleep again. But he was not going down without a fight! He's an absolute angel but can be a stubborn little guy...the first few nights, he actually fell asleep standing up for several hours. It was very hard for me as a Mom to see that but I knew that his sleep was so important for his health and well being that we had to stick with the plan to see results. And like a miracle, on the 4th night, he sat himself down in his crib, then laid himself down to sleep and slept for a 6 hour stretch, something he hadn't done in months! From then on, he eventually slept through most of the nights, and typically would only wake for 1 night feeding and sometimes would wake but just put himself back to sleep on his own! We were absolutely elated by his progress and how quickly it happened! But we couldn't have done it without the guidance, support and motivation from Jessica. If it wasn't for her reminding me to stay consistent and that this was going to work, I would have returned to my old ways of going in and nursing my son every time he woke. I was skeptical that either one of us could adjust, but our son quickly learned that he didn't need me to fall asleep, or to soothe him when he woke up at night. This gave me the confidence in knowing that he could do it all in his own! All he needed was to know that I was there to comfort him but that he could soothe himself back to sleep. Then, as Jessica had predicted, his naps came off track. But all we had to do was adopt the same plan and apply it to naps. In about 2 days, he started napping again, and did so on his own! I can't say enough about how important sleep is for our baby and our family. I only wish we would have started sooner, but am so thankful that we worked with Jessica to get the whole family sleeping again. I highly recommend her to anyone who is having sleep issues with their children. She will help you uncover how impressive your children's abilities to sleep really are, and how you can be comforting and supportive of your children's sleep without enabling them to depend on you to fall asleep and stay asleep. The end result is priceless; a happy, healthy child and a happy, healthy family! Sweet dreams!!!
