Chef Boucher is very relaxed and knowledgeable, and easy to work with. We could do as much or as little hands on as we wanted. After everything was made, we were seated in a lovely dining room and served our beautifully plated creations. So much fun and a great experience activity with my adult children. I would do it again. My review is based on the cooking school. I've been to a couple's cooking class (Napa valley wine pairing meal) and two cooking classes (Winter Harvest & Risotto). Chef Ron is wonderful! He's professional yet funny. He gives you so many inside tips during your classes on cooking in general. Bring a pen to take down all that helpful information. You'll leave with a folder of the recipes you made that day. After a partial hands on class, you are seated and the entire meal is served to you. You will leave very full! It's a great time! Well, we came here with high hopes after hearing some good things about it from the locals. Upon considering the richness of the entrees, we opted to start with appetizers. First, the crab fritters; these were wonderfully crabby. Second, the allegedly pumpkin-crusted chicken fingers....that were not so wonderful, but rather overcooked and flavorless. Third, the cheese & charcuterie board- wow! This included homemade boursin cheese, blue cheese, aged cheddar, homemade patê, smoked salmon with fried capers, prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, assorted olives, pickled vegetables, homemade chutney, and homemade mustard. AMAZING! Not only a beautiful presentation, but also a copious amounts of food....definitely plan on midnight snacking when you order this. Cool novelty drink: bacon-flavored bourbon Manhattan. Really smoky and bacon-y. Definitely a must-try for bacon lovers! Fabulous meal from beginning to end. Bread was served at the table with fresh butter and garlic infused olive oil. (They were served in cheap plastic cups). The pistachio encrusted sea bass was spectacular. The polenta it came with was perfectly cooked. Portion was more than generous. The Seafood Bouillabaisse portion was also generous. We went here for dinner on Nov 21, 2013. The presentation was nice, but I am unsure how the actual food tasted or smelled, as there was something wrong with the dining room bathroom (it was out of order), and the smell of perfume covered feces was wafting strongly throughout the modest restaurant. They had the door propped open to the entrance area, presumably in an attempt to vent the odor outwards; however, as there was a persistent outside draft (the front door is right there), blowing right by the "out of order" bathroom (which is also right there), it just served to spread the smell more thoroughly through the dining area. My asparagus tasted/smelled like asparagus and feces; my steak tasted/smelled like steak and feces; you get the picture. It's a shame I never got to taste the untainted offerings, as the other reviews on here seem pretty positive. Overall, I would have preferred to show up and find the place closed for repairs (even after the hour drive), rather than drop over $60 on a nauseating experience. This happened to a place in Damariscotta, Maine fairly recently, and they were forced to close for a week. Ah, well, I gave them two stars because everything looked pretty good; and it (most likely) wasn't the kitchen's fault that such a poor decision was implemented. Should overrated be hyphenated? Disappointment is the short summary of this review. When we arrived we went into the lounge (our original plan), but it was full. We were just inside the door, deciding whether or not to try the bistro. We decided and we just turning to leave when the door opened, hard, and smacked into my leg. The waitress who was coming through said a quick "sorry" then walked on. We went into the bistro and waited at the unattended host stand. There was not a lot of room between there and the door, so I positioned myself strategically, just in case. Good thing, because after a couple of minutes, the door flew open. Same waitress passed by with a quick "excuse me." We waited. My wife flashed me a glance and I pondered our second choice. The same waitress came back and asked if we had a reservation. I explained that we did not because we were going to try the lounge but it was full. She said she would try to find the hose to find out if a table would be coming available. Almost immediately, she informed us that a table was going to be opening. Then she muttered something, back-pedaled and said, "Let me check." She walked a few feet away, returned, and said, "Oh, we have a table." The host arrived and she explained to him where she was going to put us. He did not even acknowledge us. Our server was pleasant and friendly. She asked if we'd been there before, and also said, "If you're local, this is gonna be your new favorite restaurant." She took our drink orders and left us with menus. My wife asked for a bar menu and it was brought, but not before the host cast a glance at our table. After looking at both menus, I opted for something from the dinner menu (with advice from the server), choosing the Sirloin and Lobster. My wife ordered Duck L'orange. I also ordered the Poutine as an app, just because that's a money move, my wife ordered the Caesar salad. We were excited to order the whoopie pies for dessert. Waters were filled, but my wife's drink was slow to come (we were told twice it was coming shortly). We were brought bread: two pieces of wheat, two Italianish white slices, garlic butter and olive oil. The bread was crusty, as though it had been toasted, but was not warm. The Poutine came, thin fries w/a pleasant, dark gravy. There was white, which looked like sprinkled crème fraîche. That was the curds, and there wasn't very much of it.The server refilled waters numerous times. The host, though he checked in with other tables, did not check in with us. Meanwhile, at least two tables seated after us were served their meals. With one more check-in, we were told our food was "running" and would be out soon. When the food came, the trouble really began. Mind you, this is more than an hour after we were originally seated. The server worked extra hard this whole time, but no explanation was provided for why things were so slow. Everything looked good, but as I took my first bite of only-warm steak, I got irritated. I went to the other side of the plate and got some tepid lobster. I picked up some potatoes that were cool. I asked my wife how her's was and she said fine. I found one warmer piece of steak and ate it. Everything was heavy with butter, but NONE of it was hot. If I have to wait that long for food, it had better be warm (you know, freshly cooked). This had obviously been sitting for awhile. When the server checked in, again, she read my lukewarm response and, unfortunately, she got the brunt of my frustration. I asked for a doggy bag so that I could take it home where I could at least heat it so it would be warm. At this point, I was not only hungry, but very frustrated. She said, "I'm sorry. Let me take it right back." I said, "No, I'm done. I'll take a doggy bag." My wife ate her food and I waited for my take-home container because I didn't want to eat a cold meal. She came back to check drinks and my wife had finished eating (she was taking some home, as well). She took the food back to package it and my wife asked for the check. The server was still working hard to make this disaster right. The server brought the bill, then ran my wife's card. When she returned, she said, "I took the Steak and Lobster off." Under the circumstances, that was the right thing to do. She asked us to give the place another chance even suggesting nights to try. She left and the host came by the table for the first time, to bring us our take home containers. He reiterated that they had taken off the one meal and apologized. He explained, "Someone in the kitchen cut his hand and was freaking out." While that might have been a valid explanation, it's one that probably should have come during the hour we waited for the food. It also didn't explain how other tables were seated and served while we waited, and my wife pointed that out to him. In short, he screwed up, then tried to weasel out of it. He said he would talk to the server to see what happened, and my wife quickly defended the server. read more

I had heard great things so my husband and I decided to check this place out. We will NOT be returning. First of all the portions are SMALL - think not enough for your toddler. But certainly not priced as such. The food was awful though so I wasn't totally upset about the super small portions. I ordered the gnocchi app - which was supposed to be "over a butternut squash puree" - there was maybe a dollop of squash to be found on my plate, not at all as described and not tasty either. Bland. My next course was the ROAST CHICKEN BELLISSIMO. I was first shocked at just how small the Statler chicken breast was. We are taking 5-6 bites tops. But what really knocked me off my seat was the fact that after the first bite, my mouth was on FIRE! I literally couldn't eat it. Additionally It was extremely dry. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be hot and I asked for the menu to make sure I hadn't missed something. I hadn't and the waitress offered to make me another. However, I had to wait until the kitchen was done with a large 8 top so it was about 30 min. When I got the new one, it was good, still super small, but good. Someone must have literally spilled a bottle of red pepper flakes on it and thought - oh well! My husband was having similar luck with his entree, the monk fish. Two small pieces was all there was to it. He ate the fish and none of the rest. He mentioned he wasn't crazy about it to a manager who inquired seeing that so much was left upon clearing and she told us she'd take it off the bill. She walked around the corner and told the waitress who grabbed the dish, flew back over to the table and asked very accusingly, "You didn't like yours???" All tone. He was embarrassed and said he liked the fish, but nothing else, it was fine. Needless to say, the charge appeared on our bill. We felt obligated to order dessert. Can I tell you what a mistake that was! I ordered what was supposed to be cheesecake. It was this huge frozen muffin of a cheesecake that was FROZEN through. I needed a chisel to get a bite. Hubby got the pots de creme trio - the chocolate was delicious - only one of the 2 with any flavor. Service was SLOW - took 20 min to get a refill on a glass of wine. What a shame, definitely won't return. Owner/Host Ron was there the whole time and never took the opportunity to try to make it right. ADDITIONALLY, THE TYPE-O'S THAT LITTERED EVER MENU WERE ABSOLUTELY EMBARRASSING FOR THEM. CAN NO ONE THERE PROOF-READ THEIR WORK? Don't waste your time or money here. read more

We had the good fortune to lunch at Chez Boucher in Hampton, NH twice in the last two weeks. The food and service, without a doubt, the best we have had on the SEACOAST. We enjoyed Escargot en Croute served baked into a crusty roll, fabulous! For entrees Shepard Pie, and Southern Fried Chicken, simply the best we've ever had. All of this served to us by the Chef. It was so Great to actually meet and speak to the person who created our meal. We've also tried the authentic French Poutine, French Onion Soup, and a wonderful BBQ Meatloaf. Add to that awesome cocktails and delicious deserts. What more can you ask for! When they're serving their great food, they're teaching others in their cooking school. That's What!! read more

The Caesar Salad may well be the finest and most original version I've ever had (and I've eaten my share!) A co-worker raved about this place so we had to give it a try. We came on a Friday night and grabbed drinks at the bar before our reservation. The bartender was very accommodating and knowledgeable of his craft. Always nice to see. Ordered the calamari as an appetizer with drinks and we loved the cornmeal batter that was lightly fried. Off to a good start. We sat in the dining room for the rest of the evening and I had the seared scallops with spinach ravioli and this amazing cream corn sauce. I couldn't stop eating it! My husband got the surf and turf. The highlight was the lobster mac and cheese and less so, the steak. We split the Irish bread pudding which was very a nice twist on the classic. Moved from Los Angeles to North Hampton. Can't say how fantastic this restaurant is. Cocktails, bar menu, dinner menu so well thought out, so delicious. I rarely review on Yelp unless I've eaten at a place a few times but this is the kind of local hangout that is both fun and exquisite and addictive. Yes, I did take pictures of the plates but no, I'm no photographer. Try the cassoulet, try the french onion soup, eat light, eat heavy it's all here and always changing. Stumbled across this place on an internet search and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner this past weekend. Nice ambiance, seats about 40, friendly staff. A number of returning customers were also dining Saturday night. The lemon cream sauce on the Norwegian salmon was light and had just the right amount of lemon flavor. Sorry to say that we had a bad dining experience between the service and the food - so disappointed! Skimpy portions - forgotten sides - missing drinks for children. Onion soup had to be sent back. Seafood Porto Fino was a combination of cold seafood and mushy fettucini - had to be sent back. Chef comped the soup and the dinner plus gave us a dinner to go but once in the car, the almost "off" seafood smell was bad! Steak Au Poivre was not Medallions! Ron Boucher is definitely as good as it gets! I have been all over Europe in many Michelin starred restaurants, and Ron is right up there with the best of the best. His dishes are always fresh and unique (not to mention artistically beautiful!); his sauces are divine-- never too salty or too over-the-top rich. On my last visit to Ron's Bistro I had OVEN ROASTED CEDAR PLANK SALMON; with a bourbon peach chutney glaze served over fresh baby spinach with butternut squash ravioli for $22. It was heavenly. My husband had the GRILLED LAMB STEAK; boneless top sirloin lamb steak drizzled with a pomegranate molasses demi glace, served with a bulgur wheat risotto & fresh asparagus, also for $22. Our friend ordered BAKED STUFFED SOLE ROULADE; with a crab, artichoke & baby spinach mousse served with roasted red potatoes & asparagus, also $22. We were all thrilled with our dinners. Ron came over to our table to chat, which he always does, and is such a pleasant compliment. I can wait to go back to try something new. Must be quick because he frequently changes the menu. This place has phenomenal food. It is definitely an upscale place so don't expect to pay $10 a plate. It is a small intimate restaurant with about 9 tables in the dining room so you should definitely make reservations. Don't be upset when you walk in off the street and can't get a table because you didn't make a reservation. There is a small bar next door too where you can get their food, but we have always sat in the dining room. My wife and I have been there numerous times and the waitstaff is professional and knowledgable. You should definitely get the seafood nachos...one of the best foods I have ever had. We live in Hampton & went here for the 1st time on March 24th 2012. We thought it was truly outstanding in every regard. We each had a salad,which were good. As an entree I had the steak au poivre which was terrific and accompanied by green beans and probably the best french fries I've ever had. My wife had grilled chicken with vegetables and fettucine,which she thought was outstanding. We shared a dessert which was great. We will definitely be back to his adorable bistro real soon. We made reservations on very short notice. When we got there we were seated next to a window. I number of items from their menu selection sounded intriguing, so we decided to go the appetizer route. We began with their seafood chowder which was just amazing. Every spoonful was filled with a bite-size piece of something different than the previous one. Just a great soup! After the chowder, our other appetizers came: seafood nachos, crab-stuffed mushrooms, and steak-kabobs with strawberries and peppers. All of them were scrumptious. My companion loved the mushooms best, while I preferred the steak-kabobs. The seafood nachos were made with Gouda cheese and were also delightful. All-in-all, a great dinner. We have been here a few times now and are in love! We tried the couples night and found the wine and food pairing to be wonderful, intimate and cozy. We have had dinner and drinks on the bar side which despite being the bar was still classy and comfortable. The new lighter menu for the bar and dining was exactly what we expected for Chez to produce, tasty foods slightly smaller portions for a perfect price, the standard of excellent cooking is still present with out feeling like you have to order a large meal. I loved the burger and the homemade pickles! We've been back to have dinner in the dining room with another couple and we were not disappointed, from drinks and appetizers perfect taste to the the seafood, to steak, duck, and ma-hi all prepared with care and talent. The desserts were delicious and just the right amount. The service was great, pleasant, knowledgeable, and attentive. Also the owner is around, checking in on all the tables, talking about the food and inquiring where his guests are from, you really don't see that anymore in dining out. Typically mass residents travel to Boston to great restaurants, but we go north now. There is no pay to park, or long walk- no over pricing and snotty ambiance at Chez- You feel like you are being taken care of at ever course. read more

Review for cooking class. I was wicked excited about taking this "savory baking" class and left rather disappointed. There is virtually no hands-on cooking to be done; the instructor does most of the work and you watch. If you know how to cook fairly well, it's a waste, and it's expensive--this class was $100 for two hours of watching. Additionally, 2 of the items we "made" did not turn out well. Gougeres did not rise (and I was very interested in these because I'm not a good baker); popover had a donut consistency and was filled with a runny chocolate mousse (which did not taste right), and grilled peaches with fresh made ricotta (turned out the best). Maybe classes with Chef Ron Boucher are better, but for two hours and $100 (and all I got to do was stir something and put some oil on the peaches), I expected a more professional outcome. It's a hit or miss. I've been a couple of times now, once in the bistro and a few times in the bar. The first time there the bartender was quick to get us a drink and offer the menu. I prefer the bar as it seems a little stuffy in the bistro. I like to eat light so the small portions are perfect for me. My husband on the other hand likes a hardy meal and for him there was not much choices. The next few times we went the bar was packed and if you weren't a regular you were served last. My wife and I went to Savory Square Bistro for the 4th time and we vote this restaurant as one of the best if not the best on the Seacoast of NH. We split the 2 bone in Natural Cedar Pork Chop which was moist and done to PERFECTION and had the half order of the 3 Scallop Risotto that was incredible. The Spinach salad was also fantastic. Cosmo was were $8 which is the best price I have seen and had a nice bottle of Red Cab called Educated Guess. A 3 piece band also played and this place was rocking fun. My son and I had a wonderful dinner this eveving at Savory. However, we were ready to leave and had asked for our check, and it took Sally 10 minutes to cash us out because she was trying to figure out how to enter some code for other customers to get a discount. I was a full paying customer...I don't know how to get discounts on my phone...and yet I was kept waiting until the discount code went through. I have taken several classes at Chez Boucher, and hoped that either Ron or Myles would be there tonight. I went to the cooking class with my mother and both of us know how to cook and prepare a meal. The only thing we were taught to do was cut veggies and separate eggs for dessert. I wanted to actually make the salad dressing vinegrette instead of cut veggies. The dessert was meringue-based and it was a muggy day which is the worst day to make meringue. When it came time to sit down they were very knowledgable about the wine, but the food wasn't fabulous. To make it better, I had the appetizer cream sauce dropped down my back and the salad flopped down the front of my shirt with only an "I'm sorry." The entree was the only good part about the meal. The dessert was not cooked in the middle and burned on the outside. To make up for that they piled whipped cream on top which made it worse. I would not recommend the cooking class to anyone who already knows how to cook. Also, we didn't notice a moldy smell. read more

Horrible Easter Dinner. Owner sat us.... waitress took drink order (just 2 of us) and then couldn't remember the wine I ordered, brought my husbands martini straight up, he ordered it on the rocks. Appetizer arrived before the drinks... we waited a very long time for dinner to arrive (only three tables with guests). Husbands dinner was steaming hot, mine was cold sirloin, cold gravy and cold mashed potatoes, the spinach was hot. The owner was sitting at the next table, I believe he heard me complain to my husband and got up from the table and disappeared, never came near us, he sent someone else over, he took my plate and said it would be just a few minutes. My husband finished his dinner before my food arrived, I had them package it to go. The waitress never came back to our table, my husband wanted wine with his dinner; we weren't asked if we wanted coffee or dessert. They took my dinner off the bill, nice, but the entire meal and holiday was ruined. Seriously, the worse was the owner's lack of attention, that was insulting. Owner is a (local) well known french styled chef but you would not know it from the bland menu of things like various risottos (low cost of food for restaurants so they love selling it). Wine list had like zero french wines, yet it's a french styled restaurant??? Next door are several really fine American restaurants including the 401 and Old Salt, very good choices over this place. Too bad, as a real french bistro would be nice in Hampton area. This guy is supposedly a well regarded chef whose brother owns Rons landing or something but better get his act together on this so called bistro or close it up. I've owned restaurants so don't like to blast places but this one is warranted since they have an uppity attitude they're a fine french bistro and I see nothing of that sort. Note: bartenders should be friendly minus any attitudes, regardless of the customer. it's bartending 101. Total makeover of menu is highly warranted to reflect a true french bistro read more
