I have attended numerous services here and each one was a lovely experience. Fr. Shane is a talented rector with a knack for intelligent, applicable sermons that throw Christianity into a modern light without stripping away its basic tenents. The sermons challenge you to think, and they exercise intellectual and spiritual candor. The idea of "that they may all be one," is evident in the welcoming atmosphere of this church, and anyone can go to Mass here without feeling uncomfortable or discriminated against for whatever reason. This is one of the few churches I have attended in which the idea of Christ being accessible to all is preached from the pulpit. Episcopalians extend Communion to all, regardless of religious affiliation or age - even the children from the Sunday school classes can go up to the altar rail - and it is really a lovely experience. Coming from a Catholic background Communion was not a new experience for me, but those coming from other religions, particularly branches of Christianity in which Communion is not available to the congregation every Sunday, may find the experience to be an intimate and special one. The congregation has grown a bit since I first started attending services here and while I was never a fixture every Sunday, I was always made to feel welcome and as though I were a part of the community when I did attend. The choir is talented and the music wonderful - make sure to go to the 10:30 a.m. service if you wish to hear it. I highly recommend St. Mary-in-the-Highlands to anyone looking for a church home. I also recommend it to those people who have negative opinions of Christianity in general - St. Mary's will welcome you and will demonstrate that not all Christian churches mete out the fire and brimstone talk. I also encourage those people who have felt let down by Christianity, who have been made to feel that they don't count, or who believe that there is no place for them at God's table to try St. Mary-in-the-Highlands. Father Shane is a wonderful preacher whose homilies are always made to fit well in that he includes himself, and often tells you something of himself, deeply personal, and memorable. Always touching and Gospel-centered. The congregation is a very dedicated group that makes one feel welcomed and wanted. They are happy to share their beautiful church with anyone who comes in friendship and peace. They are a bit shy to be heard during hymns but I think that changes over time, and perhaps they would rather hear their talented congregational choir sing, as well as their very talented priest. Father Shane chants so beautifulLy, and sings the mass so well I can't wait for their fantastic Easter Vigil which is on Saturday the day before Easter Sunday. The Vigil on Saturday is April 23 at 7:00PM or really just when the sun gets down behind the mountain and has just set in the beautiful highlands in Cold Spring. The Great Fire is lit outside on the lawn and all of the congregation, and all of the celebrants stand around this fire as it is blessed. The large Easter candle is studded with the traditional nails forming the sign of the cross, and then the candle is lighted from the blessed fire, the light now being declared in chant as "The light of Christ" by the celebrant to which the people respond ..."Thanks be to God!" Father Shane has a wonderful voice and you will get to hear him chant the traditional Easter Proclamation, or more precisely, The Exultet, an ancient hymn which is sung before the Easter light and is so moving. It starts... "Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels! Exult, all creation around God's throne! Jesus Christ, our King, is risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation!..." There is more, and it is also unusual that Fr. Shane does one other thing, there is an open Baptism held for anyone who had not ever been able to for whatever the reason, be baptized. Call and find out more, but there are no questions asked, just arrange, come, and be baptized. This is an amazing church. Spiritual, Gospel centered, rational, and welcoming of ALL people. If there is any service anyone would want to go toward being their first at an Episcopal church, then this is the one! The most important day in all of the church's calendar, yes, even more so than Christmas! Hope to see a big crowd there! Update: February 8th 2013 My partner and I were just married in St. Mary's church this morning! It was a simple ceremony that seemed so extravagant to me because of Fr. Shane... the best priest you will ever meet! I was so happy, and we were so well treated, and welcomed... We both felt like royalty! When we walked out of the church, it was snowing... the ground lightly covered in what looked like powdered sugar.... the snow flakes floated and swirled all around us. Blessings from the heavens high above us came gently down on us all. That scene could not ever be reproduced, and it beats anything anyone could ever have planned. Join us on Sunday.... All are truly welcome with open arms. We deny no one communion. All you need to be is baptized, and we will gladly take care of that, too, if need be! Gay, straight, black, white, .. all are welcome at God's table. Father will baptize anyone who wishes, no questions asked (well, maybe just the usual ones for your certificate) - we have open baptism, and open communion as well.

I've made many good friends at our temple. Services are wonderful - mixture of Hebrew and English, lots of music and warmth. Saturday services are followed by a lively discussion of the week's Torah portion - always with a Kiddush lunch. And we love Friday night services, which are followed by a potluck dinner. Our children received a great Jewish education at the temple's Hebrew School.

This church has become my home…read more I walked in a little over a year ago not knowing what to expect, but knowing I needed and wanted more than what I had been experiencing.  I needed to hear and understand the word of God. I wanted to be closer to Him, and surrounded by others who love and know His love, not just check a box, and make appearances. God was drawing me away from all that was a facade.. He's drawing you right now. I remember that first Sunday I went in to 'check it out'...there was this uplifting music coming from within, so different from the old Hymnals that seemed to speak another language and had rarely stirred my heart. It was upbeat, joyful, and relatable.. speaking to the world today. The Pastor (Bobby) welcomed everyone.. I loved that he wasn't wearing a 'costume', he was dressed casually and spoke in such a passionate and humble way. He brought his humor, love and his flaws. That was what blew me away that day. The fact that people were not wearing their 'Sunday masks', above all the Pastor. In the past, I had always left church feeling kinda disconnected from everyone, not feeling good enough or a part of it.. and always reading this perfect posturing from the church leaders which can be intimidating to the person trying to get closer to God. Pastor Bobby was so relatable, and 'sprinkled' his experiences and heart in, but his main objective was sharing the word of God. It was so refreshing, and the presentation was fascinating to me. There were screens on each side of him that referenced other scripture verses that supported the book he was teaching and it made it so understandable.. I can remember thinking, 'wow, this is what it should be like.. not a church "leader" up there giving his own opinion and reinforcing the church and traditions, whilst only 'sprinkling' in God. They even offer free Bibles to all who attend to keep if they don't have one. I fought back tears that day, but they ran down anyway as I thanked the Lord for leading me there. I knew it was where I needed to be to understand His words.. and to grow in Christ. I was lost for so very long. I literally ran into the Pastor afterwards and asked him where the offering basket was, as I wanted to give, and he waved his hand away and said cut that out, relax, go check out the cafe and enjoy the day, we are happy you are here. (They do not pass an offering basket. Ever.) There's a cafe where everyone hangs out afterwards and enjoys fellowship and breakfast. On the way, I saw multiple rooms filled with 'littles' learning and playing together. I have never seen a place so busy with love and affection for God, and for others. I called the next day to ask about membership and the woman told me they don't hold membership.. as it is about you connecting with God.. not you and a 'church'. Wow.  I knew this was my new home. The true 'Church' are and should be all that believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is our Lord and Savior, and was sent to die for our sins, to give us a way to the Father.. to save us. He brings us together to worship and serve Him, and bring others closer to Him. If you are expecting statues, and stained glass to "fill' you with the Spirit, this is not your church.. like the pastors, it is casually dressed, and placed for the purpose of worship and praise together. I have been to many churches that were ornately designed, and filled to capacity, (and I am sure there are many wonderful churches that have these qualities) but I have never personally experienced a closeness, or a time where the Spirit of God was filling the place as I have and still do. The Pastors of Calvary are the instruments of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit in bringing others to know and love Him, and be known and loved by Him. It has become my home in such a short time. I never thought I would be writing a review on a church, but Calvary is so special. I participate in the Women's Bible Study and have been so warmly welcomed. God has been so good in my life, and all He has done, and continues to do in my heart. I finally opened it to Him, and gave it back to Him to make it into all that He has intended it to be.  This church is a learning church, a growing church, never setting out to build itself but building others to a closer relationship with their Lord and Savior. Come see for yourself, and I encourage you to attend the Wednesday night service with Pastor Nick, he is another phenomenal teacher, and humble and genuine man, full of love for the Lord, and passion in bringing others closer to their Savior. Jesus is just a half a turn away..He's that close, and He's waiting for you to open the door to your heart to Him. 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life' Amen.

From the moment we entered the room we were made to feel welcome. Every person made it their business to greet us warmly. Each time I've visited I've been impressed with the pastors and the congregation. Pastor Peter presents the gospel in a way that reaches out to people rather than closing them off. He teaches the fundamentals of living this Christian life and how to show love "in action". Pastor Maria, who has an infectious smile is right by his side, sometimes dedicating children, pumping up the congregation in preparation for an event and other times teaching a junior church class. Each Sunday we have the opportunity to meet someone new as we greet each other when the children are released to their classes. Pastor Peter's sermons are relevant and topical and each week I walk out feeling I've been gifted a nugget of truth that I can meditate on and share with my "neighbor. They are unapologetically an informal contemporary fellowship of believers and I am so glad they are! Pamela

This is a small African American church I was invited to and I found it to be really, really small in terms of congregation size based on the number of attendees I saw during my visit. I found it to be filled with God loving people, pastors message was on point with biblical truths and overall a nice small church if that's what you're looking for. Often times people looking for a new church home know what size congregation they want. Some want really small churches like this one that tend to be more "family" oriented because of the small size while others are looking for what I call "mega" churches were they simply attend, warm a seat and get lost in the shuffle avoiding intimate relationships with the general congregation. It's all a personal preference and if you're looking for a new church I hope you find that perfect match. My experience at this church was super positive, my only complaint is the music and sound system was insanely loud. Otherwise, check it out for yourself and decide if it's the fit for you're individual needs.
