The Downtown Connection has been serving the community for over 20 years, and it remains NYC's only free circulator bus. It's a good resource for connecting Lower Manhattan and Battery Park City. The buses run daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., each bus seats about 22 people, and they're easy to spot thanks to that bright red branding. There is, however, room for improvement. They claim to have an updated tracking system with real-time maps and apps for iPhone/Android, but in my experience, the tech doesn't always match reality. The biggest frustration? I've had drivers cruise right past me while I was standing at a designated stop. I'm not sure if they're just trying to stay on schedule, but it defeats the purpose of a commuter service. Bottom line: If you can actually catch one and the driver is willing to stop, you certainly get your money's worth. Just don't count on the GPS being 100% accurate.

It was habit for me to accept the brochure out of politeness, in case I might change my mind about visiting, and the idea that it is easier for me to read a piece of paper sometimes than trying to navigate a phone browser or phone app where something might not sync up because of bad connection or bad programming. Usually, it's the bad programming that gets me more than anything. At the same time, something is better than nothing at all though, right? I am thankful to save a few steps along my route.

Now that I'm actually at the station after my "rural" trip west I can understand way. The Hoboken train has been scheduled to leave in zero minutes for quite some time. There might be a reasonable explanation for why only one of three tracks is in use, but I can't see why that would render electronic signs incorrect. Maybe there's another AWS outage?

At least it offers a terrific view of the NYC skyline after exiting the Lincoln Tunnel on a clear day. I do have to say that the bus runs frequently, is on time both ways, and drops off right in front of the Expo center. I took it early afternoon to attend an event at the Meadowlands Expo Center and had no problems getting there and back. The bus was pretty empty both ways. Made a few stops and that was it. A little confusing finding the correct gate at the Port Authority but no biggie. Serves it's purpose well enough.

There are three steep escalators that take you to the street without ever climbing a step. (If you think I'm lazy, I'll remind you that I'm no spring chicken.) -- I frequently go between Philadelphia and NYC via Amtrak. The Q is a couple of blocks from the Moynahan station, and leaves me minutes from my building. -- The Q goes practically everywhere I want to go: Carnegie Hall (57th Street), Times Square (42nd Street), Macy's (34th Street), Chinatown (Canal Street .... though I usually take the bus) and Coney Island. -- In Brooklyn, the Q follows the same route that the D formerly did, which is what I took growing up. (I'm nostalgic!) -- Going downtown I always get a seat -- though I'm happy to relinquish it when someone boards who needs it. The train seems clean. Or clean-ish. Climate-controlled, too. Years ago cars were dirty and filled with graffiti. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter. So yeah, I'm happy. The Q has it going on!

I can get off here at 57th to go to Nordstrom and much more. I seldom take the subway. If I plan to enjoy shopping in this neighborhood this winter I better get used to this station. Winter came early this year. I'm usually in a hurry to get out from underground. I haven't noticed the condition. I feel like it's always being renovated. I'm just glad I have door to door service because this station is located at 57th Street. I'll probably be here today with my daughter.

Coach…read more The Dartmouth Coach service to and from NYC has made it possible for me to FINALLY be able to easily and regularly get to Manhattan and Broadway and SUSHI from The Upper Valley. Prior to The Dartmouth Coach starting this route to NYC it was beyond horrendous to try to get there. I don't actually have an entire day to waste on Amtrak (which may or may not run). I definitely don't want to have to drive and then park and then drive back. I get on The Dartmouth Coach at 6:15am and I'm in Manhattan in time for lunch AND a matinee AND an evening performance. Oh! And did I mention I got to NAP THE ENTIRE WAY DOWN?? Personally I'm not interested in watching movies or surfing the net. I work. A LOT. So if i'm heading down to NYC it's for a well deserved BREAK and I had to get up at like 4am to even get to the bus. I LOVE the opportunity to sit on a completely clean and QUIET bus with a nearly fully reclining, oversized seat and SLEEP. Although I'm also neither a small child nor an idiot. I travel equipped with headphones and downloaded podcasts and audiobooks on my cellphone, which I simply plug into one of the convenient outlets located in front of my seat so that even if I listen to something for a full 5 hours my phone is at 100% when I hit those Manhattan sidewalks! I was very curious as to why The Dartmouth Coach had such a low rating on Yelp. So I read the other reviews here. Wow. Just wow. Getting to a bus that is LEAVING at 1:30pm AT 1:30pm is late. I am personally DELIGHTED that The Dartmouth Coach does not simply ignore every passenger who arrived on time to cater to a few incredibly entitled late people who clearly care about no one but themselves. Also? I do not expect anyone to refund my ticket price for something that I missed because I personally was late. On multiple occasions I booked round trip tickets to NYC on The Dartmouth Coach and then needed to change my dates and/or just cancel the trip. Every Time I was either rescheduled for no additional fee or my money was just refunded to me. Every. Time. GREAT SERVICE. GREATE COMPANY. GREAT DRIVERS. No. Really. I marvel at the fantastic quality of drivers The Dartmouth Coach hires and retains. These guys (I've only ever had male drivers) are unfailingly nice, polite, nerves of damn steel in EVERY sort of driving situation. Complete and total professionals in whose driving hands I feel 110% safe every time I step onto the bus. I am SO happy and Thankful for this service. It is an amazing, amazing thing. Oh, also? $159?? I called, and they said I couldn't get a refund a month after my trip, despite having way more important things on my plate for the last month. Terrible customer service, it was unnecessary to be as rude as they were on the phone. Never using this coach again. Also wondering how someone exists with that little compassion.

Now, those prices might seem high, but consider this: Driving a car, the toll at the Queens Midtown Tunnel is $5.54 Ez-Pass. I would easily use two gallons of gas. In the car I need to allow at least 90 minutes and maybe two hours to get to the city and get parked. Parking in the city is no joke, with a 1/2 hour @ $9 and 12 hours could exceed $30. Be early, the train waits for no one. Buy your ticket in the machine, not onboard. It takes all cards and cash. One star off for surly service. One star off for frequent problems, whether it's signals, tracks, power, wrecks, trespassers, stalled trains and the like. Welcome to New York. And there are days when the bus comes when it feels like it, the bus is packed, and traffic is bumper-to-bumper on the Bruckner. With the BxM7, you never know what you're going to get. The fare is $6.75, which is borderline overpriced. The buses have comfortable seats and charging outlets. Other than taking the local bus to the slow 6 train, the BxM7 is the only way to get from Coop City to Manhattan.

As it stands, because the tracks are elevated, you're going to feel the full brunt of the weather in the Summer and Winter. Minor inconveniences aside, this is still a decent station.
