It was a Saturday and the traffic was not an issue. I did not stop at the rest stops or anything but found it well paved and clean. The turnpike roughly sees 1million travelers a day* roughly. That's almost $150,000,000 million dollars in revenue a day*. Our passenger car traveled from NYC's Interstate 278, Elizabeth, Staten Island to NJ 18, New Brunswick for a total of 17 miles. There also many rest stops along the way and gas can be inexpensive. Complaining about the Mad Max demolition derby otherwise known as the NJ Turnpike is like complaining about the recurrence of Tuesday or Wednesday when they come around every week. The NJT is a middle finger microcosm of New Jersey... loud, fast, reckless, rude, dirty, mismanaged, expensive and congested that politely asks you to play nicely in close proximity to 18 wheelers who are cranked on caffeine and No-Doz (or worse.) I avoid the NJT like the plague but somewhere along the 122 miles of gridlock and lawlessness you'll find yourself with no other alternatives. My recommendation is to get yourself a more than decent vehicle (junkers, hybrids, subcompacts and ten year old Kias need not apply) and a week of lessons at the Skip Barber Racing School. How many words would it take to describe how much I detest this "iconic" NJ roadway that stretches from the GW Bridge down to the Delaware Bridge? There aren't enough words in a vocabulary. But I'll try... Why then have I given it 2 stars instead of the 1 (or less if I could) it assuredly deserves? Because in the end it has gotten me to where I need to go. And because, in the interests of fairness, some of my distaste is no doubt subjective. At least to a degree. As I've gotten older, I've become a timid driver. On any roadway. My night vision sucks. I'm nursing an incipient cataract that sooner or later will have to be removed. It sure didn't help when a pandering Gov. Whitman raised the speed limit, or when the vehicles on the road became larger and faster (cars whiz by now in the "fast" lane like rockets accelerating to achieve escape velocity in order to break through the gravitational field of Earth) and driven by reckless egomaniacs. Or when I gave up that "one for the road" or the ingesting of opioids and "other things" (I didn't do this routinely, and they didn't help my driving, for sure, but they did ease the tension of driving when I indulged-- in my own defense, those reckless years are long behind me). But...the truth is I'm not comfortable now driving on any road. Particularly at night. Unfortunately for me, and most of the other drivers who traverse it, the NJ Turnpike isn't just "any road." It's "any road" X 20. I never had cause to pay much attention to it in the past. When I was a kid, we took Rt. 3 into NYC, and the GSP down to the shore. When we traveled to Florida in my father's car for our yearly vacation, we took the NJT to the Delaware Bridge, but my nose was invariably buried in a book for most of that passage. I guess it bothered me somewhat that non-NJans saw the ugliest side of NJ as they traveled from Newark Airport to NYC via the Turnpike. Although I'm born and bred in NJ, I've never been a NJ booster (for example, I never thought Bruce Springsteen was any good until he started singing about places like Nebraska), but...in fairness...for such a small, densely populated state, it's remarkably diverse. You wouldn't know that if you only saw it through the distorted prism of the NJ Turnpike. In recent years, traveling on it has become a necessity for me. During the last years of his life, my father lived in Maryland with my sister, and I rode down there monthly. Obviously a part of my distaste in that particular situation was the tension and dread caused by the expectation of seeing my father decline dramatically, as he did month by month. But another part of it was that I found the southern portion of the NJT bleak and depressing-- flat, empty countryside with nothing to break the monotony except the crowded, filthy rest stops that I was forced to avail myself of (I preferred driving on Rt. 95 through CT into Rhode Island and back in my younger days; it was a hazardous roadway, but at least you passed through cities and towns that gave evidence of civilized life and culture; not that I mean to disparage those living in south Jersey...but I digress...). In recent years, I've been working in Hoboken, and have had to use at least a portion of the NJT in my daily (and nightly) commute. Welcome to Hell. Just getting to the toll booths can be a "profile in courage" as you take your life into your hands and play "chicken" with 18-wheel trucks, 4x4 Pickup Trucks driven by sociopathic "speed demons" suffering from erectile dysfunction, aggrieved malcontents taking out a lifetime of stockpiled aggressions on their fellow road travelers ("You're one of them!") or...conversely...the aging and addled driving at 35 miles an hour or less as they drift haplessly over into one toll lane or another. If you survive that, you get a nice all-encompassing view of festering swamps, pollution-spewing factories, ancient crumbling bridges, decrepit warehouses, noxious sewerage plants, etc. Maybe the view was pretty in the 1700-1800s. Maybe not. And then there's the never ending construction. Arbitrarily, entire sections of the highway will be closed down at night, and you're more or less on your own as far as finding alternate roadways for your commute home (or wherever). Or you'll have to figure out the "new traffic pattern" at warp speed as you come bearing down on it in the darkness at 65 miles (or more) an hour. One portion of the Turnpike as it exited onto Rt. 78 was as narrow...and perilous...as a slalom course in the dark. God forbid your hands on the steering wheel or your nerves are less than steady as you navigate its treacherous path. I'm not sure what the statistics are regarding accidents and deaths (I'm not an actuary, although I dated one once), but I'm sure they must be high. Sky high. The NJ Turnpike may be a necessary evil, but it is an evil. Even when it gets me to where I'm going in one piece. read more

I remembered the NJ Transit buses rarely use this road unless it is not in service. Most of the transportation buses are from private companies. The road has six lanes in each direction in certain parts, where the inner lanes are for cars while the outer lanes are for all vehicles. read more

Went to the 2014 Superbowl and obviously this road would be busy but we were on it nonetheless. But what is that smell? Seriously, certain spots it smells nasty. And why is it so expensive?! You can't necessarily tear up this green/white paper but hell this is the Superbowl and we're almost there. I hear people complain all the time in Vegas about our roads, especially the spaghetti bowl, but I can't imagine what the NJ Turnpike is like on a normal day. Probably the same? High speed link to places south. I love the N.J. Turnpike. This is simply the best road to take when heading south out of NY. In places it is up to 8 lanes of super-highway where apparently the only limit on speed is your cars ability not to shake itself apart. Traffic routinely runs around 80+ mph on this bad boy and if you are real bored, set your navigator to the 1/16 mile setting and watch the map zoom by. They have a good selection of rest areas and until last Friday had some damn cheap gas along there as well. It is a toll road but so long as you have the EZ-Pass you pretty much do not have to stop until you get to Delaware. The only down side is when there is an accident, it tends to be a road closer due to the high speeds involved. read more

I was at exit 14 on route 78 headed towards the Holland tunnel this past Sunday evening and the bedlam was so horrific it was absolutely terrifying to be driving there. There is no regulation of traffic with cars going wherever they please at crazy speeds I can't imagine how many accidents there must be there. The traffic on the 14 extension has been going on for years and years. with constant repairs. When is this going to end? How many people will have to get in horrible accidents or worse befor something is to be done? With all the money we pay for tolls there needs to be better regulation of traffic. Get your engineers on this. I can't believe you are not being sued for this. highly irresponsible. You need to protect drivers. It's not all about collecting more money. SAFETY! read more

It's revamp time! The rating stays the same, though. The NJ Turnpike (also known as I-95 from Exit 6 to the G.W.B.) has been around for an extremely long time. It's route runs from the George Washington Bridge to an area close to the Delaware Memorial Bridge. For that area, people who were on the Turnpike would end up on I-295/US-40 towards the bridge, and the vice-versa when leaving the bridge for NJ. Hey, if you knew where you were going, then you would be fine. I knew where I was going when I drove through that area from here! Various rest stops were located throughout certain areas of the Turnpike. Those rest stops had names that were dedicated to those reputable people who worked in NJ, like Thomas Edison. An exit was also made for those who had to board a train at the Secaucus Rail Terminal. Speaking of exits, the Turnpike brought drivers over to various major highways and points of interest, including but not limited to Lincoln Tunnel (via NJ-495), Holland Tunnel (via Extension), Newark Airport (via US-1/9), Meadowlands area (via NJ-3), I-195, and the PA Turnpike. Obviously when you're on any toll road or freeway (except desert areas), you would see a lot of trees and some open fields. This was the case with the Turnpike when I drove on it. In addition to that, I also saw the views of refineries, manufacturing plants, and other factories. There were also some swampy areas, which could probably explain why there was the stench of swamp gas. We took the Turnpike whenever we needed to head out to either Maryland or Virginia. We also took it when we had to go to PA, and had to utilize the PA Turnpike. There was one time when we took this for I-195 in favor of Six Flags. Finally, we had to take this whenever we needed to utilize the Lincoln Tunnel. So why the two stars? Well, it's the toll rates. They have been very exorbitant for a long time, and they're still going up! Also, traffic jams occur, even at random times when nothing was happening (no construction, accidents, wicked weather, etc.). Finally, some parts of the Turnpike were in bad shape, especially in regards to the potholes. Yeah, nothing to like about that. There's also the Newark Bay Extension (I-78), which is an extended part of the Turnpike. This brought people to Bayonne, Jersey City, Liberty State Park, and the Holland Tunnel. I drove and rode on this when we had to board cruises out of Bayonne, had to visit Liberty State Park, and had to utilize the Holland Tunnel. I didn't like the narrow lanes and random traffic jams on the extension since they were quite chaotic. The extra star remains because it brings us right to where we need to be at. Despite the narrow lanes, random traffic jams and exorbitant toll rates, we have to do what we must in order to get where we need to be at. read more

I drive the Turnpike every day to and from work. Hate to vent, but..... Getting off of the Turnpike on October 6th of this year at 4:31 am apparently my EZ Pass tag was not read by exit 13A by Newark Airport. Just received a violation notice in the mail for the unbelievable amount of $ 1.65 plus an administration fee of $50. REALLY? What choice do I have but to pay it, though I am definitely not happy about it. They threatened that non-payment may end up with my license and registration of my car being suspended. I need to drive to get to work. Just love to know where that administrative fee is going!? Thanks for nothing and fix the roads come winter time. read more

I am from Pennsylvania. If I call the pa Ezpass it takes 5 minutes to get a person. I had to call NJ about tolls and it took a hour or more on hold. I have called three time about tolls. This is the New Jersey Turnpike. This is the road you see on the opening sequence of the Sopranos. This is the road that gives New Jersey its bad name as you travel down its unattractive corridor full of refineries and unwanted smells. Unfortunately I know that for most people this road will be the only experience of New Jersey that they will ever have -- whether it be due to television or just from having driven it on their own while on the way to New York City. Please people! I beg of you ... do not judge this state based upon the aesthetics of the New Jersey Turnpike. New Jersey really is the Garden State for good reason. Try and plan a trip somewhere in New Jersey that goes beyond this road and I really do think you'll be pleasantly surprised. You just have to get away from the bad vibes that this road gives off. With all that said --- the New Jersey Turnpike is a very convenient road. I just wish they would add some damn trees to make it a little more attractive. I recently called the NJTA to report a fallen tree into my 85 year old Dads yard from the GS Parkway property. They answered the phone promptly and directed me to the website to report the problem. I sent an e-mail to Denise d. requesting that the tree be removed as soon as possible. Within a week the tree was removed and cleaned up as I requested and my 85 year old Dad was very grateful and happy that it was taken care of so quickly and professionally and with no hassle at all! OK, so they are not to blame for all the insane drivers with Jersey plates who switch lanes right into you, without checking, at 75 mph, and cause heart failure. But their service stations are seriously lacking, which is not a help to the thousands of drivers far from home who travel the Turnpike every day. We had a tire blowout just past exit 10 heading south. Stranded on the side of the Turnpike was a really, really scary experience. It would be taking your life in your hands to try to change your own tire, so we didn't. When we called them, the Turnpike Authority said they saw us on their cameras (why didn't they send help right away? Or something?). Once we called, kudos to them, they did send a guy to change the blowout to our donut spare (which is not supposed to be driven on, ideally, more than 100 miles at 50 miles an hour) within 30 minutes. Regrettably, none of the service stations after exit 10 had the right tire for our Toyota. Seriously? One service station guy told us they were not equipped to deal with tires from multiple makes and models of cars. REALLY? On one of the most-traveled roads in the entire country? Since it was Saturday night, we did not get a real tire back on till we got to Pulaski Tires in Rosedale, Maryland (many more miles than the donut was supposed to last), and we are eternally grateful to them for being open 24 hours, and for having our tire. read more

The New Jersey Turnpike is not my favorite. The signs aren't clear, the roads are clogged, the speed is high and the huge trucks smother you. Not to mention there is always construction, a little trash, and the views are not green and lush. New Jersey, the Garden State, has more picturesque roads. Also, the people tend not to be on their best behavior either so the drivers throw their courteous and friendly driving out the window for the most part. The pluses are of course the many lanes in each direction and the location of the road to places you need to go. If I can avoid it I do and head for the parkway if I can't avoid I pray it is a short trip. read more

I find the turnpike to be a wonderful concept. It separates local north-south traffic from long-distance north-south traffic, as the local folks would most often use the garden state parkway or the other myriad of freeways in the area. The lack of frequent exits, and toll collection only upon exit (as opposed to every few miles, in the case of the garden state parkway), serves to be very convenient for the driver and prevents frequent back-ups from occurring at toll plazas. However, if either you or one of your fellow passengers has to answer a call of nature while on the turnpike, you may have to wait a while.... read more

I don't have an ez pass. I live in Massachusetts where we pay tolls by EZPass or by cash. I pay cash as I seldom go on the toll roads. Recently I visited NJ. I paid every single toll on the NJ Turnpike with Cash. Thee must be an invisible toll that can only be paid by ez pass. If you don't Have an ez pass, you must pay $51.00 What gives NJ the right to penalize me for no EZ pass? It's a toll road. I was more than willing to pay the overpriced, every thousand foot tolls (seemed like it) but one was "hidden". Why should NJ be able to declare their tolls be paid in a form I do not have when I Have the money they require in hand? Why not bit coins or Foreign Money while we're at it. This is an Un-American, uncaring Scam and there Must be a law Against abusing tourists and others who do not have An EZ Pass. The constitution does not say that we must have an EZ Pass.
