OK may one star is not completely fair, but we reached out in good faith and with an open heart to ask some basic questions about New Life, and we were pushed away. The senior pastor Eric Shin wrote me that, before he could answer any of my basic questions, I should detail my spiritual journey first. He demanded that I "do what I asked you to do first" and only then will "I send you what New Life requires of those Christians who are trying to come to New Life." This was really surprising and disappointing. And frankly rather arrogant. Is New Life a welcoming, open, and inclusive church that embraces everyone? Nope. They "require" things of people who are "trying" to come. I was essentially informed that New Life has strict membership criteria and I needed to be vetted first before they would bother responding to any questions. Have you ever seen a church like this? What is funny is that they call "unchurched believers" VIPs. That is the primary demographic that they are trying to grab. Are you seeking God? Are you questioning your faith? Are you searching for a spiritual home? They don't want you. Seriously. But are you already a "believer" but happen to not have a church yet? Congrats you are a VIP! They will welcome you with open arms! Church is a very personal thing. Everyone is looking for something different. If this "members only" approach to church is what suits you, then New Life is 5 stars. For everyone else, I can confidently say that you should look elsewhere! read more

This is the church I grew up with since I was in 8th grade, so of course I'm going to have biases for and against it. Here's the basic structure of the church: it's the English-speaking church of the adjacent Seoul Baptist Church (Korean) of Houston, which is Korean-speaking and has 4 services (I believe). It's considered Southern Baptist and is a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. NLF and SBC are actually two separate churches but work together in areas like youth group and large events such as Fall Festival (an alternative to Halloween), etc. There's a main service at 11:00 AM on Sundays. Service includes praise (singing), announcements, sometimes a skit or video, a sermon usually by Pastor Eric, offering with a special song, and then an ending song. If you're a parent with children, you need to register your children into classes by age before you go into service. Then during announcements, there's a "prayer for children" time when you go up on-stage with the rest of NLF's parents and children. They say a prayer for your kids, and then you walk them to their respective classes. Head back to the main sanctuary where they'll sing some slower praise songs, and then after service you can pick your kids back up again. After worship they have refreshments served in the reception area. You can even grab coffee there before the service starts if you want. Sometimes there are baptism services in the fountain/pool in the reception area. It's always touching to see people get baptized and declare their loyalty to Jesus. Ways to get involved outside of Sundays: There are weekly Friday meetings called House Church. They range from college-aged to older married couples with kids. There's a section on the communication card (that comes with the program you receive when entering the church) where you can indicate wanting more information about house churches. Someone should contact you within the week. A House Church consists of 6-12 people gathering at someone's home, sharing a meal, singing a few praise songs and learning about God's word. But the main reason for House Church is evangelism. It creates a non-threatening environment to invite non-Christians to come and learn about the Bible and Jesus. This is NLF's main tool for evangelism and have seen many people come to know Christ this way. It also provides a smaller, intimate group for accountability and sharing lives together. Every first Wednesday of the month is House Of Prayer at 7:00. Come to pray for the world, our country, our city, our community and our church's needs. Saturday is usually when youth events are held (middle school to high school). NLF currently has a senior pastor, Eric Shin, youth pastor, Sam Oh, and an associate children's pastor, Chae Cho, on staff. NLF also has a missions pastor, Tae Pae, currently living abroad for a year with his wife and kids. NLF is very missions-minded and sends several missions teams out per year. The more recent countries are Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico, China, and in the past, Kosovo, Canada and Camp Barnabas in the states. The demographic is mostly Asian-American, being Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Cambodian, with a few Caucasians, Hispanics and other nationalities. I no longer go to that church because I don't live in Houston anymore, but I've been going to that church for a very long time and can hopefully help with any questions that you have. Aside from all of the facts, I love this church. Pastor Eric, though personally admitted to probably being a better military leader than a pastor, has a heart of gold and genuinely cares for his church. Everything is very structured and organized, and there are so many different ways and ministries you can get involved in. The people there are genuine and truly have a real relationship with Christ. God is there. That is really all that matters. read more

Closest thing to the NT book of Acts church. If you are looking for a church to just attend and leave without meaningfully engaging with Gods people and evangelism, this church is not for you. I've been a Pastor for close to 10 years and have been part of 5 churches. And I've never seen a church with the love and joy and hospitality and evangelistic zeal like I have here. read more

HOUSE CHURCH :: There are dozens of these groups to choose from, sponsoring a missionary abroad. Each group is different and is comprised usually, but not always, by some type of commonality. IE. Newly married couples with young children, college students, post-college young careers, etc. Each meeting is hosted on Friday night and rotates from member to member, hopefully sharing the responsibility of hosting :). Food is most often provided. Usual structure - food, ice breaker, music, short message, sharing. MINISTRY :: There must be a dozen or more ministries that really help members become rooted, serve, and really be a part of the church. Its really creative and functional. Check it out. COURSES :: There are all types of classes that are offered. I have really taken much myself because I travel out of the country for school. But i've heard REALLY good things about all the classes. I've NEVER heard anyone say they didn't enjoy it. I've heard really good things about a "Living Life." Try it :) SUNDAY SERVICE :: -Song (a couple worship songs, the band is pretty legit. there are some pretty talented people up there) -Announcements -Prayer for children (all the kids come up to the front with their parents while a member prays on stage) -Sometimes a testimony -Message -Song (more music :D) **service is about an hour and a half to two hours. Its long :( But hey, if you can spend two hours fully engaged at the movie theater why not at church? There are a lot of people who come to this church for a reason.
