It's situated in the beautiful village of Kingston, nestled right at the bottom of the Downs. It is your typical British country pub. As well as a bar and restaurant area inside, there is plenty of outdoor seating and a small playground around the back to keep the kiddies entertained. They are a Shepherd Neame pub so have all the typical ales plus a good selection of wines available by the glass. The food menu is pretty standard, but they do have a very extensive daily specials list with plenty of fresh fish dishes. I went for the chicken and chorizo skewers to starts, unfortunately the meat was quite dry but the Thai chili sauce served as an accompaniment was very tasty (although probably out of a bottle). For main course I had the dressed crab served with salad, bread and new potatoes, which to be quite honest was completely tasteless. The crab didn't appear to be that fresh, the salad needed a dressing (iceberg lettuce, really, can you not come up with something a little more exciting??), and the bread was one of those mass produced part-bake things you can pick up in any cheap supermarket. So disappointing. My friend seemed to fair better with her red snapper which she said was tasty. They redeemed themselves with the dessert menu. Although some were clearly bought in, it did feature a homemade banoffee pie and a lemon and lime ginger tart. Both were delicious and left us both needing to undo the top button on our jeans! They do offer a Dining Club discount on food (must include a main course) of 10% - this is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 'a steak for a tenner' deal on Thursdays. The whole pub is undergoing refurbishment in early 2024 inside and out which is great news as it was looking a bit tired when we last visited. Better weather sees the use of the large field for parking and al-fresco dining which proves very popular, especially at weekends as the pub is located in the South Downs National Park and is just a (steep) walk from the South Downs Way.

Its about a mile outside of Lewes so its a little bit quieter than some of the places in town but I think that's great now and again when you want to get away from it all and just take in some beautiful surroundings. There's some nice beers on tap that I would highly recommend you enjoy in the beer garden which is actually set in the chalk pit itself!

In the summer, the expansive secluded garden is perfect for children to bomb about, or for those summer nights when the weather is pleasant (of course, a bit hit and miss in this country!). The menu is wide ranging (check the website for a current list of dishes) and offers traditional, quality pub food. A lot of the produce is locally sourced and cooked to order. Sometimes this does mean that you wait a little longer for your meal, but the wait is worth it in such a nice environment. This is a great pub to consider for a Sunday roast, especially if you live in Brighton and have access to a car. They will happily take bookings and also cater for private parties in the dining area. I would have liked to see a wider range of ales on tap, but they do try and keep a local brew or two in rotation. Aside from that, expect your regular range of alcoholic tipples on offer. Many moons ago, in my youth we used to walk to the Thatched from Burgess Hill for our Friday drinking sessions and I would still make that walk! The decor is old but not tatty, just well lived in as a pub should look in my book. The food is great home cooking and not too pricey which some of the pubs around here can be.
