Small store, helpful owners and good fabric choices. Quite a few up-scaly fashion fabrics.

EXTREMELY RUDE!!! Went in to buy 3 yards of fabric after already stopping at Textile (Where they're SO MUCH NICER btw), and because my phone died on the way home I couldn't see my exact amount in my bank account or transfer anything but Calculated how much I would be able to get (never at all went in knowing I didn't have money and never would). Unfortunately, the cost was a couple cents off so I asked to get two yards instead, and the cashier responded with "We already cut the fabric". I understand it may be annoying because now there's a yard cut that I can't buy, but I'm a college student and have to budget and if my phone were on I'd have no problem transferring money to pay for it. I apologized and just said to keep the fabric because there was literally nothing I could do and he RUDELY responded and again said "we already cut the fabric" basically trying to force me to pay for it. I asked what I could do and he said "you don't have the money?" and while trying to NICELY explain my situation, he cut me off and dismissed me. I tried speaking to one of their employees and he apologized but couldn't do much and AGREED they were rude to people. I called once I got home to charge my phone to report him to their manager, and they blamed me and said that I "should've had the money" so it was "my fault" they acted this way. I would've GLADLY spent the money with them if they had just even gave me a half yard less than what I wanted initially. Luckily I could go to Joann's across the street and get what I needed without this shitty customer service. Not everyone has money to freely spend without hesitation and I was in a bind and already struggling to travel without my phone. They will never be getting my money again. I love this store... I wandered into it by accident a year or so ago and realized it was a small family-run store yet has a solid quality feel inside. They have wonderful fabrics that I can't find elsewhere, and they have every color serger thread you could ever want. I am slowly stocking up on all their serger thread colors so that I will have thread ready for any possible project I pull out of my fabric stash. I was also told recently by some friends that they have a large color selection of silk organza which is a MUST for underlining quality outfits so I'm heading down there this weekend to check if this rumor is true. :-) If so, I will have another reason to make this my fave fabric store. read more

I am so excited to find such a fabulous fabric store! The selection is great, from beaded lace, sequence, chiffon, satin and much more. Beside the selection the service was very good, both gentlemen where helpful and patient as I searched for multiple items. I look forward to returning to this store. read more

I visited this store when it first opened almost seven years ago. They have not changed much in terms of their styling but they have gotten a lot bigger. If you took their fabrics and placed it in a place the size of Vogue and you dropped their prices, then you would have a great fabric store. The Good: Selection is very modern with great colors and patterns. Best I have seen in Chicago. Not surprising because the owners are Indian and India always has the best in colors and fabric selections. Kudos to the owners for bringing great stuff to Chicago and staying afloat. They deserve your business because the selections are great! Service is great! The owners are extremely pleasant and nice from start to the end. Excellent customer experience. The Bad: Still not enough variety to make what you are designing and pricing is high. The store does not put prices on all of their goods and when you ask you cannot be sure if they are quoting you a higher price. Just expect that whenever you ask for prices, the owners will make sure to quote you the highest price, despite what you may read. You will get a response that it was "misshelved" or "I am sorry but this is actually the price," which will always be higher. I believe the bait-and-switch idea can be applied to this store until they start putting tags on everything in the store and are completely up front about pricing through written and posted numbers. This is a wonderful family-owned fabric store! Very knowledgeable when it comes to helping me make good choices on matching colors together. I had a large order, but was serviced quickly. The people here are very friendly, helpful, and made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. Beautiful selection of fine material. First and foremost I am a repeat customer and may I say I have never had a problem like this before until this day. I went into New Rainbow Fabrics and needed to purchase a particular denim. I'd mentioned to the sales associate (their daughter) that this was the only place that carried this fabric and I was so happy about it! I'd mentioned to her that I was even interested in buying the whole bulk of fabric. Upon inspecting the fabric I noticed that the first yard, had stains, glitter and dust all over it. Being that I needed to present a sample to a potential buyer, I needed a clean yard of fabric. When I asked the sales associate if she could cut off the dirty fabric and cut me a clean yard she explained to me that she needed ask her manager (the owner/her father). He came over 10 minutes later only to tell me that he would not cut off the dirty portion. He explained to me that no fabric stores does this. I said to him that was not true and that it wasn't my fault that they are storing the fabric wrong and that it is not the customers responsibility to have to eat the cost of a dirty fabric. He didn't offer me a discount nor was he willing to help, he simply tried to wipe off the fabric and convince me it was not dirty. He then told me that it was not his fault that the fabric was dirty and that he would not eat the cost as well. I explained to him my situation, in which he knew he had an upper hand) and let him know that I am a repeat customer but that did no good. He knew that I needed the fabric and gave me an ultimatum that I could either purchase the dirty fabric or get out! I couldn't believe that he'd said this to me! I am on an advisory board at one of the biggest fashion design schools in Chicago, I am a well known designer and I am very fluent in the design community is what I told him. This did not bother him one bit. I left the store and let him know I will be letting everyone know! If you need fabric, there are tons of stores in that neighborhood that are way more willing to accomoadate you as a customer than this store! PLEASE SPEND YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE!!! They think that they have gotten so big that they don't really need your business! I would suggest not buying their fabric as they never have deals, their fabrics are cheap and overpriced and they don't store their items properly (like off the floor)! read more

More than pleasantly surprised with this store. Let me back track a bit. I have been looking for nice wool coating material for a couple of years and haven't been able to find exactly what I wanted. My mom has been telling me about Fishman's fabric store since I was a little girl. She went there when her sisters were getting married for great material at a great price. Now, she hadn't been there in close to 20 years so we prepped ourselves for obvious changes to the store. I had never been to Fishman's or the Vogue Fabrics down the street. I had only been to the Vogue in Evanston for really good fabrics. So I was very excited to see what this mythical Fishman's had to offer. They had nothing to offer me. Correction nothing affordable to offer me. I found beautiful wool coating material for way way too much and walked out of the store after being in there for maybe 5 minutes. Disappointed, mom and I walked to Vogue to take a look at their wools. Nothing. Again, disappointed. As we walked out mom and I noticed the sign for New Rainbow Fabrics and decided since we were here we may as well check it out. I went in thinking I wouldn't find anything because it looked like such a small store. I was very very wrong. The space may be small but there are so many fabrics to look you barely notice the size of the room. Wall to wall fabrics. Tons of gorgeous silks. The owner was so friendly and lead me to all of his wool coating material where I was very happy to find a nice deep red wool for my coat at half the price of his competitor up the road. I'm so pleased. I will definitely be back for the silks and the wonderful service. The prices were really great. read more

Rainbow Fabrics is great. Please check out this store. The staff is extremely helpful. I spent over 3 hours there because the staff was really trying to find the absolute perfect fabric for my dress. I will definitely return. There is no snooty attitude (unlike across the street at Vogue) and they did eventually find the perfect fabric. Thank you Rainbow. You are superior! read more

Purchased a VOUGE pattern at the bargain price of $4.99 a week ago. Little did I know how difficult it would be to (1) find a 4-way stretch knit fabric and (2) having to sell my 1st grandchild to pay for it. Let's get something straight, I am the pickiest person I know. My focus on getting exactly what I want is ridiculous. Did a Google search for fabric stores and found New Rainbow. The Yelp reviews were mainly positive and I was having no luck with visits to several locations of that nationwide "600-lb." gorilla of a fabric store (which literally barely had a half dozen) of 4-way stretch fabrics. Upon entering Rainbow, I was overwhelmed at the depth of the interior, as from the outside it appears small. A salesperson, Sagar, came to my rescue, took me to the exact location of where the fabric was stocked and allowed me to make my selection in peace. As mentioned above, I am very picky and tend to know exactly what I want as soon as I see it. Having so many choices, I was wandering from one end of the section to the other several times (did I mention they actually stock their bolts about 4 deep?) I guess Sagar saw me wandering back & forth and asked if I needed assistance, told him I'd know it when I saw it and he said to signal him if i needed help. Fortunately, I hung in there and found exactly what I didn't know I lusted after, until I saw it. All of the three guys working there were nice but Sagar is my hero, as he asked me exactly what type of fabric I needed (as I was about to give up) and took me directly to the spot. Did I mention that their jersey knits were all $1 off of their already reasonable price. The piece I bought was "literally" more that twice the price, for an inferior quality product, at that nationwide chain. May make this my first stop when looking for fabric. always use yelp when i don't know of a referral. simple in and out and very pleasant experience from the salesgirl as well as the owner. just a simple zipper for a cop jacket, however the girl was extremely helpful picking out the right match! will return....don't sew, don't design clothing, but i do know business and personal service. pricing seemed to be in order. read more

First off, I didn't like the appearance of New Rainbow Fabrics...I realize the store is small and that's the reason I was drawn to it, however, the store did not carry the African fabric I was looking for, they had some generic stuff they tried to pass off... second....the PRICES were ridiculous! Again, with the store being so small I thought I was going to get a good deal but looking at the price tags for the fabric I wanted was prohibitive....I won't be returning to this store....EVER! read more

I needed to find fabric for a custom prom dress for my daughter. Went into another fabric store across the street from New Rainbow Fabrics but there was not a single person available to help. Since I have no experience in purchasing fabric (and how much I would need to buy), I decided to go to New Rainbow Fabrics to see if they could help me. I was not disappointed. As soon as we walked in, the owner (I think her name is Reshma) and her son greeted us and offered help. I showed her a picture of the dress we were having made and she showed us fabrics that could work. She showed us different price ranges and textures so that we could make an informed decision. I immediately felt I was in good hands with her guidance. She told us exactly what we needed to buy to make the dress - zipper, elastic back band, fasteners, thread. Everything. They had a vast selection of fabrics and a range of prices. I would highly recommend this store. read more
