Added a new rescue pup to the pack in December and had stomach issues for months. Many vet visits and test and still no improvement. Finally took it upon ourselves to visit New River after blood in his stool and they agreed that we should switch his diet. As simple as that. They provided a bland diet and we switched his food to follow and all of a sudden our puppy was just fine. So frustrating that our current vet wouldn't listen to us and kept telling us not to switch the food cause that couldn't be the issue. The checkin process was great, the doctor and vet tech were fantastic, and the lab results were hella fast, and the bill wasn't out of this world terrible. Absolutely amazing facility and care! Dr Klopp completed back surgery on my dachshund when his back legs were paralyzed and he is doing great and will walk again soon. She is very compassionate and thorough and we were so blessed we found her to take care of our baby. The entire team has been great and prices were reasonable for emergency care. I tried very hard to use these guys for my ailing golden retriever but they just weren't that interested. I had a referral sent to them from my vet and after calling them three times over ten days they told me someone would call me back. They confirmed they had the referral, but apparently they like to initiate calls instead of receiving them. In the meantime I checked their Yelp and Google reviews and boy am I glad I did. These people sound like idiots and I'd be one too if I took my dog there. So read the reviews and take my warning to steer clear of these guys. read more

Quick update - our little guy started to show the same symptoms in December and we called Carolina Critical Care and they were wonderful! Kind, professional and knew exactly what was wrong with him and resolved it right away and we only paid $600 for emergency treatment and medication - which didn't come in a gift bag! They also took great care to ensure all of the dogs in their busy practice were safe and secure and couldn't infect one another. The technician showed it to us and went over all the instructions before we left. Go to Carolina Critical Care for emergency treatment and avoid New River Veterinary Specialists, unless you enjoy spending thousands of dollars to be treated terribly!!! read more

Clean spacious office full of 20-somethings year olds gabbing and chatting away while you pray your foster dog is fortunate enough to survive their accidental foreign object ingestion. It didn't feel very professional. I paid $246 for this type of emergency intervention in Raleigh, NC in 2022 and paid $392 for this care at New River today, when my estimate was only $366. I feel scummy, taken advantage of, and saddened. The extra upcharge for after-care medication is the real zinger. I wasn't aware the medication I was discharged with wasn't included in their estimate and I certainly wasn't informed it would cost an extra $41. I will NOT return here. If you have a budget, and value transparency- I wouldn't recommend this practice. read more

Was referred there for orthopedic care for my rescue, called to make an initial appointment and was asked to pay "a deposit" over the phone. "Then when you come in," she said, "you won't owe anything." Hahaha. "So it's not a deposit. You just want me to pay in advance. No thanks." read more

New River is an AMAZING establishment with wonderful people who are not only highly educated and experienced in their field but kind and thoughtful in every encounter. When we got Obi from a local shelter and saw the extent of his injuries (prior to being taken off the street) we were very lost and the staff here helped us formulate a plan forward. They talked us through every worry, every concern. They called to check up on him post-op. They treated him like he was their baby. I will never take my animals to another surgeon and/or emergency location again. We still have a long road ahead of us and are confident in New River. As a side note regarding other reviews regarding price. Yes, vet medicine is expensive. Especially when looking at certain specialties. It's the same as when you go to the doctor except you have insurance. So, got get pet insurance. It will save you thousands. New River is worth every penny. read more

This hospital must be closed. They have 26 veterinarian and a lot of stuff, which is the reason for cosmic prices . They don't have patients, because people are unable to pay . They offer a spleenectomy to our dog for $9000 ,scan - for $ 5000 , hemotransfusion-$4-8000 Without a guarantee for her life . And they suggested us for euthanasia. I am very sorry that this time I accepted this offer. They gave pain medication to our dog and told us that she is not moving, sleeping, and would die soon. But she was medicated with painkillers. The right thing was to bring our dog to another hospital . This hospital will not exist very soon , they will falit . They had only 3 patients hospitalized . Despite having a referral for hospitalization, and speaking with the staff twice on the phone well before we arrived, we waited 50 minutes just to get in a room. Then we waited another 20 minutes more to see a dr. The waiting room is loud and cold. There is no separation for cats and dogs. The tech watched me struggle to lift and carry my pet in her carrier, her bed, and her food but did not offer to help. The exam room was very cold. My pet is anemic and was shivering. We paid $170 just to get an estimate for hospitalization. I cannot recommend this place. If you have plenty of time and money, it might be fine for you. read more

I have needed emergency care twice since locating near this group. Most recently, my dog was critical. He did not have much of a chance, but I was lucky to have this group so close by. I found them incredibly competent and compassionate. The amount of state-of-the-art equipment that they have is outstanding. I think he is alive today because of the care he received. From the first call to them, after hours, they were there to attend to our needs. Very compassionate, could tell we were hurting and were with us all the way. They don't care about your pet, only your money My cat couldn't pee. He seemed to be in pain, so I took him in on a Saturday. Turns out he had an obstructed urethra, a life threatening condition. Two days and $3500 later, I picked him up. They said I needed to watch him carefully for the next 48 hours to make sure he is peeing. So I watched. And he's not going normally, but in tiny squirts. Is this enough? Does he have another obstruction? Since I don't have another $3500, if he's obstructed again my only choice will be to put him down. So I called and asked to speak with a vet to answer my question: Are these little squirts enough? I called at noon and was given a vet tech. I asked to speak with a vet. This is a life threatening condition. I don't trust that the vet tech has the experience to give me good advice. So I was told a vet would call me. After 5 hours, no call. So I called again...a vet will call you. But they haven't. So I called again. In 10 hours time, I have not gotten a call from a vet. The receptionist told me to bring him in, that I didn't need a call from a vet. Really? I DON'T HAVE ANOTHER $3500!!! Shouldn't the vet care enough about my pet to take 5 minutes to return a phone call? I will Never take a pet there again. I was told that Carolina Critical Care is cheaper and more responsive. That's where I'll try if there's a next time. read more

Stay Away!! New River Specialty Vet.... What can I say.. Competent, Knowledgeable but EXPENSIVE! Not just expensive because it is an Emmergency vet. But over the top gouging! But note that it is a business. Not a compassionate Veterinary Hospital. They care about the money not your animal. That is it. They have a high employee turnover rate because you can only sell your soul to the devil for so long. Trying to force you to leave your animal overnight for many nights (@$2000 a night), not because the animal needed it. But just for the opportunity to see a specialist which you then additionally need to pay $275 for (Even though the specialist was in the next room). When I told them that I was already out of pocket this month $10k (for two dogs) and couldn't afford the extra nights in the ER if my baby didn't need them, the Vet said well then you will not be able to see the Specialist until the following week. (I repeat the specialist was right there and I would have paid their fee). They are a money grab. That is it. They purposely positioned their business outside of sun city in order to take advantage of the elderly. Take your animal elsewhere. I have learned that there are reasonable Board certified specialists in Savannah. Do your homework. I wish I did. I have also used Carolina Critical Care this month and yes they were more money than a regular vet which is to be expected. But they were wonderful during a difficult situation. And Fair!! they charged reasonable rates for an emergency hospital and didn't try to keep my animal in there for the sake of charging more money. read more

We took our very sick dog in on March 20, 2024. Expecting to hear the worst we were told that actually it was his gallbladder that needed to be removed, in an emergency fashion! We had to come up with a $7000 down payment before they could begin. We came 2 days later to pick our dog up and owed another $6750. They said he should be much better now. With an appointment scheduled for stitches removal, 2 weeks later, we observed our pet not bounce back. We arrived, talked to vet tech, first bill of $1000 (low estimate) to $3000 (high estimate) was asked to be signed before we could see vet. After vet checked him over it was determined he needed to spend the night and get fluids. New bill presented of $3000 - $7000 and before we could leave we needed to give them $4000. We picked our dog up the next day and 4 days later our dog Is dead. read more

This past Saturday night, we had the unthinkable happen. Our beloved family pet was displaying serious signs of a medical emergency. We are located in Beaufort and the nearest pet hospitals were over 45-90 minutes away. Luckily we remembered passing New River as we were driving to pooler recently and called. When we got there, the facility was incredibly nice and clean. They had a gurney for our large dog who was no longer walking and were able to get him inside. Unfortunately things didn't go as we hoped and we had to make the difficult decision to compassionately end our dog's suffering and upon being given our options and being presented with the Doctor's professional opinion, he was incredibly kind in such a painful and vulnerable moment. We chose cremation for our best boy and not only was it done within 3 days of losing our furry family member but they had done a memorial paw print for us and wrote us a sympathy card. This was one of the most painful moments of my life and the care in which the situation was handled as well as the personal touches in follow up really made a difference. I highly recommend this facility for emergency care for their thoroughness, professionalism, compassion, and their foresight in providing care and comfort in our entire situation. read more

I took my nine-year old cat, Meg, in because she was limping and cuts from a cat fight as well as redness in the inside of her mouth. I was seen within 5 minutes. The vet tech/nurse took her history and what had prompted me to bring her in. She took Meg away for examination. Dr. Nelson came in and explained that she and bad cut on her leg and throat. She examed her leg but found no break, which I thought was the reason she was limping. Dr. Nelson did not feel X-rays was needed and did not want me to incur expensive fees. They cleaned out Megs cuts. She gave Meg an antibiotic shot that will last 10 days since Meg had a fever. Since she has an appointment with her regular vet in 2 weeks, Dr. Nelson said that appointment can be Meg's follow-up. The sores in Meg's mouth were not due to the cat fight. They indicate that Meg is suffering from an allergic condition. I had no idea. I am very happy and satisfied with my visit to New River Veterinary Specialists. I was so wrong with my diagnosis of a broken leg. Her cuts are minor and are healing. She got a shot that will treat any infection for 10 days. Boy, am I happy I do not have to pill a cat for 10 days. And I found out she has a treatable disease. I now know what to do to make her feel better. The building is pleasantly decorated and comfortable. The exam rooms are state of the art. And most importantly, the staff are friendly and caring. You can tell they care about the animals. I will be telling my friends and family that they do not have to fight traffic into Charleston or Summerville to get excellent emergency care! read more

On Jan 27 I was recommended to New River Veterinarian specialists. I live in HHI, SC parttime. My dog has a condition that causes her to bleed and must be treated immediately. The initial visit was good and she was treated and the bleeding under control. The following week I called the hosp several times to request a refill. No one called me back I also sent several emails I wanted to take extra medication when traveling , incase she bled again. I was driving for two days to return to my home state. After multiple calls I finally reached a tech who said no way would she give me a refill for I had 10 days supply. Actually I had only 12ML which was 6 days. My local Vet said he would call but the tech stated they would not accept his call. I explained if she bled again when I was traveling and was unable to locate an emercengy vet she could die. The tech hung up. No call from a Vet and no one cared about the dogs condition or understood my situation read more
