Niles West High School - Well, I kept 5 classes of students awake and interested! Hopefully they learned and/or were inspired by something. One can only hope.

These are the sort of community based events that a public school's facilities should be used for, bringing the general public in to show what the tax dollars are being used for, and giving prospective students/parents an idea of what's ahead next. It is a large auditorium, with comfortable seating and good acoustics. It can host a large production, with a lot of available seating. It also has dedicated auditorium parking very close to the main auditorium entrance, but it's limited. The studio had 6 shows in all this Sunday, and between show 3 and 4, it was definitely busy in the parking area, but everyone was dealing with it happily: a beautiful day outside and a show that makes you feel young.

Chief Justice Merrick Garland is probably the most famous Niles West grad at this time. Nominated…read moreby both Presidents Obama and Biden, I think he'll be Attorney General any day now. Other alums who've made the news are Rick Singer (think Lori Laughlin/Full House college admissions advisor) and George Papadopolous (foreign policy advisor for President Trump). Of course there are sports stars - Rashard Mendenhall (Steelers) and Jewel Lloyd (WNBA), Bart Conner (Gold medalist), etc. But what I really like about Niles West is that it's probably the most diverse high school in the country - by race, national origin and socio- economic status. See - a lotta people talk about supporting diversity but don't exactly want to live in it. Niles West embraces the over 100 different languages and makes it happen. And you don't have to be an elitist to attend this school, however, with hard work and good grades - you'll find yourself in elite company, in the very near future.

Former student here, so I can give a better perspective than some of the kiss ass parents on here…read more I gave it two stars to be generous, as there are some good things to ND overall but the bad outweighs the good here. Pros: -Classes are great and teachers want to help you. -After school stuff is well funded and well organized. -The sports events are fun to go to and the team plays well. -There's some elements of cameraderie (I'll focus on it later) -Food is fantastic. Cons: -Students can be right-leaning, some even bordering white nationalism (students have used pro-Confederate quotes on Instagram, and publicly have used racial slurs along with positive feelings toward bringing back slavery). -Homogenous school setting (almost everyone is a middle class, white, Republican prep kid that likes some sport. No one is really diverse or unique). -Lack of IEP/Special Ed programs. -The administration, while friendly, tends to favor the vox populi rather than the people getting bullied. You can see that my only problems with this school is the kids and the lack of IEP programs. Everything else about is good. If you want a good Catholic school for your child, I'd recommend it if they can keep to themselves politically. Otherwise, if they're Left of Centre all I can say is get the popcorn ready.

The brotherhood there is unbelievable with these boys they have a great bond with each other. They have excellent teaching staff and many clubs and athletic opportunities to be in. Do not send your student of color here! I had so many racist encounters here. A teacher smelled my…read morehair in front of the entire class because she was "curious", a student drew a swastika on the bottom of her shoe my freshman year, and some of my classmates were called the N-word along with it being said on several other occasions. Many of the Muslim students were made fun of for their religious beliefs. I was told that my hair was "sassy" by a classmate by sophomore year, whatever that means. Dr. Allworth did absolutely nothing when she was informed about it and her only solution was to put up posters around the school reminding students not to say the N-word instead of just holding the students who were saying it accountable. If a student donates a lot of money to Regina and does anything wrong, they will never face the repercussions of their actions as the school does not want to risk losing their funding. Not to mention the fact that I was assumed to be there on scholarship on several occasions because they couldn't fathom the fact that I could afford to be there. A student told me that she would call her father who was a police officer on me because she felt like I was using my "black privilege". All in all, this is not a safe environment for students of color, and was an extremely traumatizing experience for me.
