Delicious hidden gem, you really wouldn't know about this place unless someone told you to check it out. The store is empty with just one thing and one thing only. FISH! The salmon is so fresh and delicious I couldn't believe it, I went there to grab some salmon for my bagel this morning and got more than I expected and a little sampler of smoked salmon as I waited. Best salmon I've had on a bagel in a long time, the fact that it's in house smoked and hand sliced makes it all that much better. Very flavourful and fresh! You can easily go out to a restaurant like Arthur's and spend 20 on a bagel with all the fixings, but might as well get more bang for your buck with fresh smoked salmon and than head on over to real bagel for a bag of 12 and feed the family. Best smoked salmon in Montreal. I love their smoked salmon, I always get it for cheese plate or just to eat it by itself. They only take cash! NO credit or debit cards. I believe it's a family run business, the older guy is so nice, whenever you step in the store he will give you a sample of the smoked salmon. I didn't have a chance to try anything else cause their salmon is so darn GOOOOD!!! I wish they talked mush so I know much about the other seafoods :) Don't get discouraged by the look of the place it's blah but really good smoked salmon. I took a star off because the guy who sold us the smoked salmon today cut it really thick, it's still yummy but preferred the thin slices. My grandma had been bringing us smoked salmon from here for 20+ years when she'd visit us in he US. I've yet to find anything that compares. And I've looked. When her age no longer allowed her to visit and the early stages of her dementia left her unable to tell us the location, we thought we'd lost the best tasting fish forever. Fortunately a family friend knew where to go as soon as we mentioned smoked salmon. When you order, they slice you off a sample and with the very first bite we knew for certain we'd discovered Grandma's secret location. She lived for several more years and each time we'd visit her, we were sure to stop in and take a pound or two of salmon home. I'm in town for her funeral tomorrow. We made sure we got our salmon. My wife is a volunteer with the SPCA and for 8 years now - with the permission of the owner of VFM - has been swinging by to pick up discarded styrofoam boxes that are converted into winterized shelters for the outdoor cats. Today when she arrived to pick up boxes, the owners was present and when she began to take them, was told repeatedly to go fuck herself and get off his property. This was in front of 2 witnesses. One of the witnesses was a delivery guy and kindly suggested that she go to A1 Fish Market on Van Horne instead. She had a very different experience there. She got the boxes. The guys were lovely. Even though the fish at VFM may be excellent, there is no excuse for such appalling behavior towards a member of the public. read more

Buyer beware! I recently bought 1/2 pound smokes salmon. The counter is set up so you cannot see them slicing the fish. I must have received the last pieces because when he was done he threw out the carcass. When I opened my package at home the pieces were hard and dried out. I returned the next day and explained what happened to Frank, the owner, requesting a replacement. In an unpleasant tone he told me, too bad, someone has to get the end pieces. These are not honest people and they don't care about their customers. read more
