FINALLY managed to make it to New York Deli after living in Cardiff for years. I'm an American and always had it in the back of my mind that I needed to visit a little slice of America in Cardiff. I had the "New York". Unfortunately, when I went they ran out of hoagies so I had to get it in a bagel but it was packed to the BRIM. Although when you look at the prices you might grimace at it seeming expensive, because of the generous portions the prices are well worth it. This is more than just a simple sandwich people!!! 4 stars because the bagel itself was just alright but the fillings were delicious. I have had the opportunity to dine at this quaint establishment, pre-my lactose, wheat, gluton, yeast free diet - as they are essentially a 'bread basket' full of delights. And, it is, simply marvellous - so I drool at the thought. And, if you are extremely hungry, you will not be let down by the portion size either. OK, it is not a cheap deal, but really now, you can pay £3.50 for a couple of slices of bread at boots! The principle works this way, as it does everywhere in the USA. You may pay a tad more for what you are asking for, but they make up for it in volume and let's face it, if they can stuff it in, it's yours!! Want your piece of action on Rye with the works, you choose the spanner and the wrench and the chirpy staff offer you the fuel pump as well. From Hoggies, to baggles, bread in wheat, white and rye and the selection of stuffing's can literally make you well, stuffed! The only criticism I can make is that they don't have avocado which I thought was quite weird as it is a staple food in the US - California avocados and all that stuff. The staff would apologise explaining that the owner didn't like them spoiling so quickly, so didn't keep them on board for that reason. But me-thinks, if one only costs 50p each and you're located literally alongside the market place......thank you, so you have a couple spoil on you in a week, big deal, just in order to give the public yet another option. Penny wise pound foolish?? And, on that note I do agree with another reviewer there, the owner of this establishment does come across as a bit standoffish and prickly, not terribly warm, like it's an imposition to be there, perhaps working the till the only drawing card - but, the happy-go-lucky male contingent she has at her 'beck and call' makes up for her in spades. That being said they are also more expensive 'cos of their size . I don't often come away with change from a fiver and thats without cake! I despise Mayonnaise and am a little bit picky so I will go out of my way to find sandwiches that are made up freshly and I can decide exactly whats in it. One of best friends first took me there and I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed by the sandwich but loved the cheesecake . It was very quiet and the person servicing us didn't seem very enthusiastic. Overall If i'm in that area I might stop by but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there. read more

I must admit this is a regular for me. Tremendous sandwiches, Bagels, Grinders and Hoagies. I just had the NY Hoagie: pastrami, coleslaw, thousand island, cheese and salad all served in a big sub with a fork in it. As Egon Ronay might have said, "Cowin' lush mun." As a Yank expat who now calls Cardiff home, I find solace in this hoagie haven, with its ice-cold cans of root beer, a kind woman across the counter speaking my Mother Tongue and, of course, the extremely generous American-sized portions. The New York Deli just celebrated its 20th birthday in April, and if you stop by any weekday at lunch time, you'll see first hand how the popularity has yet to wane. Don't let the unassuming interior deter you; if anything, I find the hideaway location and cramped dining space adds to its charm - and the American flag perched outside completes the setup. It's a far cry from Subway and M&S pre-packaged sandwiches, and, as someone who detests mayonnaise, I can tell you what a relief it is to eat a sub that's made to my liking (with provolone cheese and lots of lettuce, thanks). Some may consider it a bit pricey, but I find that its portions are enough to leave me satiated for the entire day (I often cut it in half and save the rest for an afternoon snack). As a capital city with a culinary agenda that leaves a lot to be desired, Cardiff greatly benefits from having this little slice of Americana that serves as a welcomed respite from all the chain restaurants clogging its high streets. Oh, New York Deli... First came across this place during last year's Sŵn festival as we were wondering around town for somewhere to eat/get a coffee. I ordered the aforementioned coffee while my friend got himself a bagel. This was just the beginning. Many months later, I volunteered it as a place to go for lunch with my colleagues and since that day I have been a loyal fan. While I would heartily recommend this place to anyone, the truth is that I have only sampled their hoagies. To my mind, that's all you need to know about with this place. The hoagie is simple: big bread roll filled with lots (I mean lots) of fillings. For lovers of American sandwiches, this is your place. There is a good range of various sandwiches, ranging from the simple classic Philadelphia (ham, salami, cheese, lettuce & tomato) to the mother of all sandwiches, the White House Special (ham, salami, turkey, pastrami, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and sauce). My personal favourite is the Sinatra special, but honestly they are all worth a crack. What's also nice about this place is the atmosphere. I don't know for certain, but it definitely has the feeling of a family run place. The mobile free zone also makes this place just seem that bit more laid back. Prices are reasonable - expect to pay more for the hoagies as they are the big boys (White House Special comes in at approx £6.50, but it is like holding a small child in your hands when they give it to you...) - and the service is friendly and swift. You will feel welcome here, and the food will most likely bring you back time and time again. This place makes fantastic sandwiches. Tucked away in the Cardiff High Street arcade comes New York Deli. An American sandwich/hoagie/bagel/hot dog joint that continuously bumped out some smooth tunes from the Motown era. My companion and I both got sandwiches (had no idea they were the size of my size-12 feet) and had them brought down to our table by the delightful sandwich artist. I decided to order a monsterous portion of the classic rueben with gherkins, coleslaw, and this tasty Swiss cheese. My companion meanwhile satisfied her appetite with something off the special menu - Brie, Bacon, Cranberry Lettuce, etc. They were both great sandwiches and we indeed enjoyed them while listening to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye serenading the entire establishment with their soulful chords. Legit only ate half the sandwich - luckily I had to catch a train back to London and was more than satisfied with the second half being devoured along the Welsh countryside. read more

Yum. This place has a little bit of a reputation for excellent sandwiches. Students around Cardiff in particular seem to frequent this joint, probably due to large portions and good value for money. Set in High Street Arcade in the centre of Cardiff, this place is easy to get to, if a little hard to find for people not used to the area. But if it's lunch time and you're (unsurprisingly) hungry, then the search will be worth it. When New York Deli is busy, it's a wonderful place to sit and chat, or what the world go by. I personally love the upstairs balcony section that looks down on everyone else. There's also great seating outside in the arcade, in a nice smoke-free environment. Inside is decorated in 'true New York' style, with graffiti art adorning every wall. The problem with this place, however, is that it needs a revamp. When it's bustling, I love it. Compared to some of the cafes and delis on offer in Cardiff's beautiful arcades, the New York Deli is rather weak and is definitely not in the same class. That being said, it's a nice little place and does have its own style, which is, for once, not replicated all over Cardiff. Made up mostly of small tables and long benches, the New York Diner feel is just about in place. The menu is pretty strong and offers all things American, though I don't think there's enough emphasis on Maple Syrup. I'm drooling slightly now. They sensibly serve breakfast until noon, although I feel that this could and should be lengthened with much success. The kitchen is really small and liable to get overrun at peak times, but if you're like me you'll leave plenty of time and enjoy a large coffee for a while. It always strikes me that the customers here are always having a good time, which has got to be worth something. read more

This is a great place to grab lunch while you're in town. I'm often tempted by pre-packaged sandwiches and sausage rolls from Greggs because they're cheap and simple, but they're never satisfying and I always feel cheated because I know I could've made a better sandwich at home and it would've cost me so much less. New York Deli is well worth making the effort to walk to, as, while it's a little more expensive than the aforementioned pre-packaged sandwiches, they are freshly made in front of you, there's so much more to choose from, and, being American, the portions are so generous that it'll keep you going through the rest of a busy day's shop. It can get pretty busy in here at lunch times, and you may struggle to get somewhere to sit, but this never bothers me as I much prefer to sit outside the library and people watch. read more

If it is your first time and you're not really that fussed about what's in your hoagie I recommend just picking one of the cities these monster sandwiches are named after. I prefer the Philadelphia which is loaded with ham, salami, turkey, cheese, salad and then topped off with generous mountain of coleslaw. For the size of the portion it's a bargain the Philadelphia with a can of Mountain Dew cost me £6.60 and it that is definitely a price I would pay again. You know a sandwich is good when it come with it own fork but to be honest the best way to enjoy the hoagie is not by just taking bite because your mouth will just not be big enough to accommodate this awesome sub but just to stick your face in it! read more

If you want a filling sandwich to last you all day then the New York Deli is just the place for you. I have walking past it occasionally but never had the chance to buy anything. Finally, I visited it for the first time today and I must say I was impressed by the service they give and the choice they offer. I was greeted by a lovely woman who was very helpful because I hadn't been there before offering me to look at the menu that holds a variety of choice. They offer hoagies, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs and even bagels. With all the fillings to choose from I chose to play it safe and choose fillings I knew I would like. So I had a ham, cheese, egg mayonnaise, lettuce and spring onion hoagie. The flavours on the fresh bread tasted wonderful. If you have an appetite then maybe you can handle it all, but for me it was and extremely big hoagie that I have now cut in half and put the rest in the fridge for later. However, you do get your moneys worth because it was at a reasonable price of £4.60. This is a lovely little place with indoor seating and a take away option. Two words to describe this hidden little gem; Wow Wee! Back in the day this was the only place you could get Hersheys Chocolate and the cute American stuff that you thought you'd never see again whilst landing at Heathrow. The food here is amazing and comes in typical American portions, which for someone like me who absolutely adores food this is a perfect little nook in the cranny of an arcade. You get what you pay for here and I personally think prices are reasonable for the sheer amount. Every things fresh and looks so perfect you almost don't want to eat it...but of course you do and the food is every bit as delicious as it looks. If you like your food a little different and not from one of those boring chain establishments or if you like you food American stylee, then you really must try New York Deli. The menu is packed with monster American style subs, other savoury fare as well as sweet snacks such as cheesecake. I really enjoyed my food here but did find it a smidge cramped in there, this place can get extremely busy, this is obviously a good thing because it shows it is popular food, but always a bit annoying when you don't want to queue and like to sit down somewhere that doesn't mean you have to touch fellow eaters. This place is likely to be frequented by the same crowd that enjoy Buffalos and 10 Feet Tall as the prices are on the steeper side, but some would say very much worth it. read more

This is a wonderful little eatery. On the corner of High Street arcade (kinda opposite Hobos and the Nice Shop). They serve a wide variety of bagels, hoagies, sandwiches and cakes. At first glance the prices might seem a little steep, but then you see just how much filling actually goes into them! I love how the bagels are wrapped up for you in foil - you can feel that they are all toasty warm! And the huge cake wedges (not mere slices) are to die for. With an amazing range of american sandwiches - hoagies (which are HUGE), bagels, hotdogs, burgers it's almost impossible to choose what to have! I would heartily recommend the meatloaf sandwich.. Expensive for a sandwich , yes they are filled to the brim but the ingredients you could buy from Tesco for a few pounds ( cream cheese , mustard, cheap bread roll, cured ham or beef) and remake the sandwtich many time over for the cost of one from New York deli. The New York Deli in the High Street Arcade is nothing less than an institution in Cardiff. For any shop, let alone a specialised independent sandwich shop, to survive twenty years in business is quite an achievement. And yet, as of this year, that's exactly what New York Deli has done. The stars-and-stripes themed venue serves bagels, hoagies, grinders, sandwiches on rye, massive wedges of cake and plenty of other authentically yank-flavoured fare. There's space indoors and out to enjoy your lunch, plus Wi-Fi and a mobile-free zone. What's the secret to its longevity? Portions. Huge, lip-ripping portions of whatever takes your fancy come as standard. This is not the place for anyone on a diet or even considering one. The sheer heft of meat that's stuffed inside these sandwiches has been known to make jaws drop, literally (the mandible will become detached from the skull if attempting an 'All in One' - a foolish error made only by amateurs). There are vegetarian options of course, but if I were a veggie I'd walk in thinking 'cream-cheese bagel' and leave - with a White House Special in hand - a born-again carnivore. Either that or I'd cower at the sight of the mountainous mounds of meat which fill the counter. Admittedly it's not cheap, but it's good value; you'd probably need to go transatlantic for real to get fillings this generous anywhere else. So take your time to read the menu, choose carefully, and prepare to be stuffed. Businesses like this deserve your custom. I was only in Cardiff for one day, driving back early the next day, and so had already chosen where I wanted to eat lunch - and it wasn't this place! The place I wanted to eat at were still serving their breakfast menu, so I went for a little walk and found this wonderful sandwich place. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon and my boyfriend had an Italian meatball cheese sub thing. Both were yummy and quite cheap. Lunch for 2 including 2 drinks and crisps came in at £11 with student discount. The menu is huge and I really think there's a sandwich to suit everyone! I had the good luck to eat in the first incarnation of this little deli when it was just across the other side of the arcade. Having tasted the food in both I think It's not quite as brilliant now but I understand it had to change and develop as the shop space was very limited. When it was originally open the lady who ran it spent a lot of time chatting to her customers so trying to get served in a hurry was definitely out. But a leisurely Saturday morning pastarmi,emmental and coleslaw on rye sandwich was very much appreciated. I've since been to New York and this shop was probably the initial incentive for me to go. Although I went to the shop for those amazing sandwiches I also loved to browse through the shelves looking at all the stuff like Reese's Cups (peanut butter heart attack in a packet), and american mustard. We hadn't seen anything like it. The new shop is much bigger and has hopefully guaranteed the future of the shop in Cardiff. read more

I used to LOVE going to this deli when I lived in Cardiff! Their bagels are all delicious and they stock a massive range of fillings. You can sit inside or outside and, while the seating is limited, it's a great experience to sit there and watch the world go by. For a few moments it's entirely possible to believe that you're in New York :) I recommend their pastrami bagels followed by a slice of New York cheesecake.. not great for the waistline but affordable and delicious! read more

Ok, well this place is ok, Just big portions, yes they are big but do not forget you are paying a big price, they offer a delivery service as long as you order before 10am, me and colleagues in work have tried to order at least 10 times for delivery and every time some lame excuse is made, The Owner is rude and does not seem to care about new business at all, Also picked up a can of mountain dew, asked the price wasn't told, picked up food and the drink then when we were leaving got the cheque and it was £2 a can rip off. I just can't believe how much filling you can get in one roll! It's like someone had attempted to fit and entire turkey in rather than a few slices. While by no means the cheapest sandwiches in the world, this place is not poor value. It's eating on an American scale (by which I mean big). Plenty of choice and different options, both hot and cold, available makes this an enjoyable and slightly different lunch option which won't leave you feeling hungry later on. Went there today and spent £12 on two sardines and 2 cokes, I went 8 hours before feeling hungry, best food I've ever eaten and the staff are friendly, even gave my lil daughter something to eat for free (not that I'm nasty but I'm not going to buy my 2 year old one of those hoagies, she'd still be eating it) highly recommended, fresh food and the portions are ginormous 5* read more

They do fill the sandwiches up well but I would prefer less filling and my sandwich presented on a proper plate rather than a paper plate and tin foil! This place is amazing. Yes, it costs £5 for a sandwich, but the sandwich is an experience, not just a meal. The turkey is tasty, very tasty! American tasty, not bland British reformulated meat tasty, which is not tasty. And the toppings are proper american too, like american mustard, and pickles. Pickles are awesome. As an American I am an authority on all things American, and this reminds me of American food, because there is a lot of it and it is tasty. Also they sell peanut butter cups. A fantastic place, that serves new york style american take away food, and other american foods that are hard to get like, like jerky, cans of rio etc. The prices may seem a little high on some of the larger things like hoggies, but the amount of food you get is well worth it. The hoggies are huge, and even the baggles are stuffed high. During winter etc there is a daily different soup, which is all home made and fresh as anything,.. and very filling. There is wifi and it is also a mobile free zone. There is seating outside the deli in the arcade so if you need to use a phone during lunch you can sit out there. They are a great deli really into recycling, using paper plates so less washing, detergents, water, power etc. There's different bins for things like the plates and cans etc. The staff are all really friendly and serve you in a very perfessional manner. There is lots of great artwrok up, done by the owners son. A great place!!! read more

Can't fault this place at all! Brilliant service from the staff and manageress, they are all so eager to please and recently when doing a charity raffle they were more than willing to contribute with donations of free meals. A hoagie is must, as is the bagels-soooo scrummy and the are HUGE you won't need to eat for the rest of the week! So many choices and they are willing to cater to your tastes and can change anything to suit. read more
