His impact is vast and noticeable in both my personal, singing, and corporate/professional life. Jonathan takes the time to get to know his students/clients and is then able to truly show up for them--he's always present. His work is highly tailored and you can guarantee when you leave a session with him, you'll feel lighter, happier, stronger, and empowered. He taught me things about my voice, and how it translates to other (seemingly) non-vocally related aspects of my life; I'm talking eye opening, jaw-dropping type stuff. Over a year of working together on a bi-weekly cadence, the learnings are endless, awe-inspiring, and quite frankly, worth every penny and more. 5/5 stars doesn't feel like an adequate rating when you're talking about life changing work but, I suppose it'll have to do. I've been working with Ellie over Skype only over the last 1.5 years. I have taken around 35-40…read morelessons from her over that period. I've always loved to sing but never taken formal lessons. Let me start by saying that Ellie is an extremely perceptive teacher that - as shocking as that is - notices more about my posture and body tension over a Skype connection (often a crappy one) than I initially noticed myself. I didn't know how to breathe properly - Ellie taught me how to breathe. I have tried taking lessons with other teachers and I heard comments on how good my breathing is. I have found that learning to breathe properly gave me a deeper, fuller sound. Ellie's perceptive instructions helped me eliminate tension and bad singing habits. I love the exercises she gave me, they are fun to do and really build the voice. Doing them over and over again helped me build both my speaking and singing voices - with much less tension. Ellie is also careful when teaching. I had a bad vocal injury from another teacher that rendered me unable to sing for around 6 months. Ellie was very supportive and helped me rehab my voice. I really appreciate that Ellie is kind and careful and makes sure we don't do anything that could mess up your voice. Finally, I really enjoy every lesson because we start with various scale exercises - each time I learn how to use my body/voice properly. At the end we sing a song of my choice to a karaoke track that I play. This makes lessons a real vocal work out, challenging (but safe) and also great fun because I get to sing the songs that I love. I am bilingual and I love that in addition to all the English songs that I love I can sing songs in my native language - and Ellie is totally on board with that. Finally, Ellie is a very kind, fun person with an amazing sense of humor that immediately puts you at ease all while giving you valuable feedback that you need to hear! I would highly recommend Ellie as a singing teacher, she taught me skills that will last a life time - my ease, resonance, and fluidity in both my speaking and singing voices had increased dramatically. He was fantastic. He went at a pace that worked for me and totally calmed me down as I was pretty nervous. And guess what? I CAN sing but have been doing it wrong for all these years. He taught me how to breathe and that my range is actually much higher than I thought - it was pretty amazing. I went from nearly crying with fear to singing a tune pretty decently! SONG LAB is an amazing way to start playing with other people, test your skills, learn new skills, learn a song you have always wanted to play in record time, meet other musicians that you will see again in either virtual or in person classes, open mics, or join in rock band. Never having sung before in my life, I was a bit nervous and uncomfortable booking a voice lesson…read moreahahaha but in my 27th year on this floating rock I have learned that life is WAY too short to not do things you want to do just because you may be a bit embarrassed. I have found leaning into discomfort is where the comfort is. I walked into NYC guitar school on the 7th floor of 251 W 30th St ready to test my vocal prowess. The entrance is beautifully curated, with guitars coating the walls every direction you look. Immediately I was struck with a creative energy that I was excited to be around. I checked in and sat on the couch as I was about 15 minutes early. My middle school basketball coach would always say "if you're on time you're late." I normally am late but on the off chance I'm not I love to throw that quote around. Gaby, the girl giving my lesson, came in and got me off the couch. Her vibe was RAD. As we walk down the hall into a separate sound proof room thoughts began running through my head. "She better not give me any kind of compliment about my voice or she will create a monster..." I thought to myself while picturing my band selling out the Garden 8 nights in a row. We sit down, and she asks me what kind of music I like. I begin to give my spiel that I give everyone about how I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers and J. Cole, but I'm not a corny J. Cole fan as I saw him at the house of blues in 2010. I am always hopeful this will build some credibility... She immediately names DEEP cuts from both artists that I didn't think there was any chance she would know. "I'm in the right place..." I say to myself. I begin to tell her how I have never sang, but think I have good energy for it and how I kinda think I have a nice voice hehe haha. "You don't need to be a great singer to be a great frontman," she says. BIG mistake, Gaby. That is the first step to creating a monster. She begins to ask about me and what I like to do and I coyly tell her I have a major passion for writing. I'm really shy (shy monkey emoji). "What kind of stuff do you write?" She asks. I told her I write in my journal a lot, as I don't want to tell her the bulk of my writing is yelp reviews she'll think I'm a nerd hahaha. I eventually do tell her my unrelenting passion for writing yelp reviews, and we share a laugh. She then asks "have you written any songs?" I mean of course I have, but haven't we all? I initially resisted giving her a hard yes, but eventually did tell her "I have written a few..." "Will you sing one for me?" she asks. I was taken aback. My internal dialogue "She wants me to sing? In front of her? wtf?" I then immediately snap back into reality that I did indeed pay for a voice lesson, so she probably needs to hear me sing ahahaha. I said the same to her and we had another good laugh. She was so great at calming my nerves, saying things like "I PROMISE you I've heard worse," "Just have fun with it!" I have a bit of a moment here, sitting across from the stranger with anxiety rushing to my head preparing to sing when I hardly even sing to myself seriously. I take a deep breath and begin: "I knew right when I seen ya, I knew that, that I need ya Where you from, Valentina? What's your drink, tequila soda? That's your friend......" Alright I can't give y'all all of it, come to one of our shows at the Garden to hear the rest. My voice cracked a couple times in the beginning, but once the nerves died down a bit I felt I did it justice. "WOW! That was actually really good!" Gaby says. "You have a nice voice and a unique sound which is rare!" Maybe she was gassing me up a bit, but I'm taking that compliment and RUNNING with it. She immediately tells me to keep going and runs to her piano and starts playing notes to try and get the key I am singing in. Once she finds it she runs over and picks up her acoustic guitar, and starts playing chords along with my voice. Next thing I know I am singing this song that I wrote playing over chords, that was so F'in cool. Overall, the experience just made me realize how I need to be around these kinds of creative people more often, it's just so inspiring. Gaby gave me some things to work on until our next lesson! I firmly believe that in terms of vocal teachers in a Orange County, Jennylyn Chung is as good as voice teachers get. Her traditional Bel Canto style of singing is especially what makes her studio so fantastic for every style of singer. I started taking lessons from Jennylyn because I had talked to one of her students, who recommended that I try a lesson with her. The voice teacher I had before Jennylyn had me straining and belting, which hurt in the process and eventually did negative things to my voice. For so long, I was under the impression that singing was work and that this wear-and-tear I was experiencing would eventually iron itself out, which is what my teacher seemed to think. She didn't seem to take my concerns seriously and brushed them under a rug. Right off the bat, Jennylyn started helping me rebuild my technique. Unfortunately, I had to start from square one again because everything I knew was strained. Since then, Jennylyn has helped me take almost all of the tension out of my voice and replaced it with comfortability, ease, and confidence. I cannot say that I've quite arrived in the time that I've been taking lessons from her, but I know that with every day that passes, I'm getting closer and closer to my goal. I'd recommend Jennylyn to anyone and everyone who is serious about learning to sing well. Don't waste your money with teachers that teach at a university and claim to be an amazing teacher by backing their argument up with their degrees. Jennylyn does have a Masters in vocal performance (if I remember correctly) from Cal Baptist University, but her experience in the real world, having been with countless misguided teachers, is was really makes her the most competent voice teacher in Orange County. Jenny's extensive experience with many types of teachers and teaching styles gives her a clear picture of what vocal students often go through. She knows a damaged voice when she sees one and she can help fix and repair it. Even for those without damaged voices, Jennylyn knows how to lay the foundations down so that you can reach your full potential, no matter where you've come from in the time that you've been singing. The bottom line is that if you want to take voice lessons with a teacher who really knows what technique to teach and how to teach it, come to Jennylyn. I can't imagine that you'd be disappointed.

First time around, I was confused. Wait, we start from bottom of range and build up to a higher…read morerange? I was used to being told by my previous teacher that I needed to start from middle of range and vocalize to the top to build on the lower range. What I did not realize is that her purpose is to get all of her students to sing relaxed with a neutral larynx position at a quiet volume and build up to a large sound once the vocal chords can relax from bottom to top without stretching the chords. The key is a gentle and natural zipping of the chords that occurs naturally when we speak correctly, however with a background of vocal strain some gentle vocalizing is required to build strength in the vocal chords so that you have one, unified voice and not two or three distinct voices. The whole process might seem unusual and unlike other teacher's you have studied from, but I assure you, she has spoken the most sense to me than any teacher I have ever had and I have had several at the university and throughout the seemingly professional community of south and north orange county. I am appalled that there are not more quality and caring and gifted teachers like Jennylyn. She is not only great at breaking down things in an easy-to-understand way, but she is a kind and giving person who will truly support hard-working and driven individuals. She will encourage you and challenge you and she will help you reach your goals, be that becoming a better singer for fun or a professional career.

Having studied with numerous voice teachers and instructors throughout high school and at musical theater pre-college programs, along with being a drama major at NYU/Tisch, I can say with complete certainty and confidence that Justin is one of the most knowledgeable, skilled, and friendly voice teachers out there. His solid grasp of vocal technique along with repertoire, style, and performance technique makes him a great voice teacher and vocal coach. AND he plays the piano wonderfully. As a voice student who wants to pursue musical theater yet expand his marketability, I have found that Justin is capable of teaching all kinds of styles of music, including contemporary musical theater, legit musical theater, pop, rock, etc. He doesn't just say that you can sing any style with good technique, he teaches you specific things so that you can tailor your technique towards that style. Justin's knowledge of acting technique is also beneficial with people who also want to be able to act their songs. He works with you instead of directing you, and as a result, your performance of songs becomes organic, truthful, and more enjoyable for yourself and the people watching you. Also, he is not the kind of teacher that imposes a certain technique or philosophy on you. I feel that he tailors his teaching style and curriculum to the needs of each individual student. You never do the same exact set of exercises at every single lesson! That is why I feel his lessons are so valuable. I learn so much from every single lesson. There is always something new to learn and explore. And when you don't get something, he comes up with a new and different way to help you get it. But most importantly, Justin is one of the most patient, nice, and caring teachers I know. I feel in my lessons that he is encouraging and supportive while always giving the honest truth and reality. Justin Stoney is a one stop shop to vocal brilliance. He is equally adept in all areas needed to guide your voice into the professional performance world. I was first introduced to him as an accompanist (for a vocal workshop) in which I found his musicality most fabulous; and then found out he was also a vocal instructor and coach. I've been working with Justin for about five months, during which time my voice has made huge leaps and bounds. I came to Justin as a professional dancer, with only about two years of vocal training and the desire to move into the world of musical theatre. He is working with me to shape my voice into a place where I can not only be seen as a "dancer who can sing" but eventually as a singer! As far as technique, the man is a genius and explains everything in a way that is comprehendible and easy to process. He helps you to not only feel what is going on with your voice, but also to understand how and why. As a coach, Justin has witty and unique ideas to help you work through your songs. He has first hand experience as a seasoned performer and it shows in his coaching abilities. Within a few weeks of seeing Justin, he discovered some issues brewing with my vocal cords (based on past incorrect use) and quickly sent me on a path that has not only led to healing, but also major improvements in technique and vocal strength. I was certain after one lesson that this was the guy that was going to mold me into the professional and consistent singer I have always hoped and knew I could be. I stumbled upon Justin and New York Vocal Coaching after searching for many months for a vocal coach in NYC. I went to Justin as a professional actor with little to no vocal training. I was nervous for my first lesson because I had been trying to find a good coach for quite some time to no avail. From the very first moment I met him, he put me completely at ease, my nerves slowly vanished, and before I knew it, I was learning at the speed of light and having the most fun I've ever had while singing. The search for me as a singer was long and treacherous, THEN THERE WAS JUSTIN!!! I have been singing and performing for years, but could never find the right vocal coach, and teacher that could help me hone in on my talents. From the first lesson with Justin, he read my voice like a book. He knew exactly what I needed and has been helping me reach my true potential. Justin has mastered working with my individual voice, rather than teaching "his technique." That is soooo rare to find in vocal coaching these days. There are as many different reasons people want to sing as there are singers and all of them could benefit by studying at "New York Vocal Coaching. They meet you at whatever level you are at and then they take you beyond that. For me I love being educated on the science of singing. It's so great to know that if you put in the work, progress can't help but happen. My teacher, Matthew Johnson is amazing! He has an incredible ear and precisely prescribes the right exercises that will yield the best results. He is great at connecting the dots, taking the mystery out of good singing. Being a judge free zone, progress is rampant around the studio. Their web presence is equally amazing. Not only are there many free tips online, another great teacher, Kristy Bissell hosts an online chat on Facebook every week. It's always a lot of fun and educational too. If you're lucky you may get the chance to hear Kristy's beautiful voice sing a song (or part of a song). Justin Stoney is an absolutely AMAZING voice teacher. As a life coach, I support and empower people to achieve their goals. And this is exactly what Justin does for my voice. He has developed a unique method to teach in an inspiring way. He believes in my ability even more than I do. His sincere manner and the enthusiasm he exudes are most precious gifts for his students. Justin is by far one of the most outstanding teachers I have had in the arts and overall. His enthusiasm for his work is obvious and his desire to see his students progress is profound. Coming from a medical background I have been playing guitar for my own entertainment for years and wanted to finally be able to sing and play for a group of people. SIMPLY THE BEST VOCAL COACHING SERVICE OUT THERE! My experience working with Justin has been truly MAGICAL. I have tried so many other services before but nothing helped! I am so glad and happy to have found New York Vocal Coaching and to have the opportunity to get training from Justin. Being Indian by nationality and having been trained in Indian folk singing for years, I was not very use to the American singing styles. I started taking voice lessons with Justin six months ago having had no training of any kind previously. In just those six months my voice has changed so dramatically for the better that I am singing songs that I would have once considered untouchable for my voice. You really just cannot invest in a better teacher than Justin! He is a real, positive energy, sincerely wants you to succeed, and teaches you in a way that is collaborative, honest, and encouraging. I've studied with Justin for about 5 months now and my knowledge, interest, and vocal skill have seriously skyrocketed. Justin has an incredible ear and can hear what you are doing right or wrong before you can, and can always come up with the right exercise to help you correct or achieve what you need. But the reason Justin is such a wonderful teacher extends far beyond great exercises. Justin literally makes you feel like you are his only student. I know his schedule is insane from seeing his calendar but you would never know it when you're studying with him. You have his full and complete attention at all times. I am not a musical theatre actress and so I have always been insecure about going in for musical auditions. I did a session with Justin back in February because I had a musical audition. He was very precise with the musical points he taught me without overwhelming me with how little I know of my voice or how much work I have to do to improve it. I went in feeling very confident from my coaching. I got a callback but I only had one night to learn a new song. Justin was very kind and generous to teach me the song and sent the recording thru email despite of his loaded schedule. I booked the job, and it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have. I came to Justin as a somewhat mature artist (dance) but a complete beginner with the voice. The first major strength of his teaching is his flexibility--the ability to tailor his teaching to your specific goals. I was interested in learning as much as possible as quickly as I could, and I'm very happy with the results about 7 months into it. He identified my major problems right away, and balances targeted technical training with activities that solidify and showcase your strengths. He has a broad appreciation for musical genres. I am so grateful to have found this most accomplished and gifted teacher. Justin has helped my voice so much in such a short time. I had struggled for some time with my belt and mix and already I hear a huge improvement in my sound and quality. I came to Justin after a simple google search ("New York Vocal Coaching" - very smart) and decided to go with him after reading the excellent testimonials on his website. I came in with a small problem I wanted to fix on a song for an audition, and by the end of the hour it was fixed and ready to go! His knowledge of the vocal tract enables him to essentially "diagnose" the issue with your voice and then he'll develop an exercise for you to fix it. I've just signed up for my fifth class at New York Vocal Coaching, and I can't say enough good things about them! I've taken two classes at the ny location and two at the Brooklyn location, and all the staff and teachers at both locations were incredibly friendly and create a really cool, encouraging learning environment. He has been helpful beyond my wildest expectations in working with my speaking voice, my singing voice, and even my overall mental health and satisfaction with myself. As a trans man, it is rare that I see any kind of professional who so deeply understands my struggles, which Felix more than does. He's compassionate, thoughtful, and eloquently able to describe concepts both in simple physical terms and in helpful metaphor. Within literally four weeks I was totally confident on client phone calls, and with my speaking voice in general. I can't recall when I was last misgendered at a drive-thru or on a phone call. My perspective is necessarily as a trans man looking to work specifically with the changing trans male voice. Felix is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject, which isn't easy to find. However, I suspect that regardless of your gender identity or any other background, Felix would be able to assist you in reaching your voice goals. He truly loves and is passionate about teaching, and is a wonderful teacher. I'd give six stars if I could. I am here to tell you that Felix is maybe one of the finest voice teachers you could get, regardless of price, just about anywhere in the world. As far as New York City, and midtown Manhattan where the competition is fierce, Felix is one of the top singing teachers in the area (Although Felix also teaches out of Jackson Heights Queens). I've taken singing lessons and gotten vocal coaching from Felix off and on for several years and the voice technique I've gotten has been astounding. The vocal lessons studio is super easily accessible to midtown Manhattan, Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Hells' Kitchen, etc. In other words, all the places I typically am coming from as a performer. Felix is so nerdy about voice. I mean, any tiny little thing you wonder about? Felix has already spent like a bazillion hours researching it. When I come for lessons, I see a lot of people with some pretty severe vocal disorders and problems coming and going. Like if you were going to see someone for a vocal nodule, node or polyp and needed to work with a voice rehab specialist, Felix would be a good choice for that. And the information I got on transgender voice was really great. I had a client in who was doing trans-gender voice and Felix was so so soo informed on that issue. It's hard to find someone with this much technical knowledge and almost never packaged with someone who cares this much about people. You should seriously hear some of the voices I hear coming out of the studio before and after my voice lessons. Musical theatre, opera, classical, and even the popular genres - I hear it all there. If you have a voice that you are having a really hard time with and have tried a bunch voice coaches and vocal teachers, you might check out this studio because Felix never gives up and seems to really love challenges. Which, not all voice teachers are this level of awesome. You could potentially study vocal technique with Felix for years and never exhaust their knowledge. I dunno how I can recommend Felix any higher - definitely check out their studio. The pricing is ridiculously reasonable, too. I honestly can't recommend Felix highly enough.

I was immediately surrounded by people with passion and willingness to share their experience with music (her students). Her technique is complex but it's also learnable and fun. The technique is called Bel Canto. You also get group technique and voice building lessons. The voice building lessons are critical as well as practice time. A year after, you would have never known that I could not sing AT ALL and that I had no previous experience. I continue to work with Judy because she is an excellent teacher and she's passionate about her work. My voice continues to get better week after week, sequence after sequence. I even produced a full show with some of the students last year at The Bitter End. I sang live in NYC. Something I never thought I would be able to do.
