Singing is such a vulnerable process and though I always loved to sing, the thought of finding and using my authentic voice was always scary to me, so I never sang with my own voice in front of others. Imagine my incredible luck in finding Jess as my first introduction to voice lessons. From the very first lesson (where I literally shook with nerves through my songs), Jess has been so supportive, giving me the courage to try what I had built up in my mind to be a scary endeavor. But with Jess, it never once was scary. Instead, they focus on finding the fun and joy in singing, in not imitating others, but instead finding your own true voice and its strong points. Jess encourages through positive feedback and helps me to keep pushing myself with a range of exercises to work through weak points and to achieve different goals and vocal effects. In this process, I feel that my voice has become stronger and truer. The unexpected side effect is that I feel more confident and more like "me" after years of hiding my own voice in silly imitations. After less than a year, I am playing and singing together, something I would have considered impossible just one year ago. Lastly, Jess is such a beautiful human; a rare, creative, nourishing soul. I couldn't speak more highly of them and would absolutely encourage anyone who is at all curious to give lessons with Jess a shot. I thought I would take about four lessons when I started, but I've kept going for the sheer fun and joy of it (plus I can feel my improvement happening), and it's one of the better decisions I've made just for myself in some time. Jess is AMAZING. For many years I tried lessons on and off with various teachers but never, ever got anywhere as far as I did with Jess with only 10 sessions! She taught me singing techniques that ACTUALLY work and make sense (for those of you who've been to a bunch of teachers that make us do so much random stuff we don't even know how to begin to practice at home!) She explains everything in a very straight forward way, and is very knowledgeable of her own excellent instrument, her voice. If you are looking for an outstanding vocal coach, look no further! She is truly THE BEST! To be a good couch, it is not enough to be a good singer (which she certainly is btw), one must be able to create such an environment that the student feels that they can open up, and believe they CAN actually progress, despite any past experiences and fears.
