The library is a bit smaller than some of the others (then again, we're spoiled by the vastness of the Mahopac Public Library), but doesn't skimp on book selection and friendliness of the staff. This is also an excellent place to visit with children - their youth section is robust and it always seems like there's some fun programming for kids going on whenever we visit. The Howland Public Library is a definite asset to the Beacon community, and a must-visit to add to your list when you're in town!

The…read moreadorable brick building aside, it is everything I think of when imagining the perfect library: historic, well-preserved interior, complete with (nonfunctional) fireplace; large guilded paintings of the founders, dressed in fine 19th century garb; neatly stacked shelves; graceful tables for sitting and reading; and a friendly staff. The library is small - the literature/fiction section is in front, while most of the historical and non-fiction texts are located in the larger room, which has a stage for presentations. There is also a children's section downstairs, and the library has two computers for browsing the card catalog. I've been able to find books I've wanted here, but just as often end up requesting items through Butterfield's interlibrary loan system (remember, it's a small place). But I don't care where the books come from, really - I just love climbing the front steps, opening the door and entering Library Land. Not chaotic, we-must-queue-up-New-York-Public-Library-land, but Old Fashioned Library Land, where you can gather your books together and linger, because lingering is necessary and encouraged.

I have been coming to the Marlboro Free Library for over 20 years, primarily for the use of their…read moreCommunity Room. This library, and the people who work there, are really great. I've got my own library locally to visit for books, reference material, periodicals, media, etc., but if I lived in Marlboro I'd be at their library often. Besides a good inventory of books, there's several dozen periodicals available, a movie library, several computers, and more. In this age of ever-increasing dependence on digital, they're keeping current. But what I really like is that they have a large children's area - it's important to get children interested in reading (and libraries) at an early age. They have 2 large parking lots which can easily hold regulars and folks who might be attending a function in the Community Room. The bathrooms are always clean and well-maintained too. The Community Room has enough space, tables, and chairs to accommodate several dozen people. Multimedia services are available. There's also a side prep room with a small but full-service kitchen. I've always found the staff of the library to be extremely friendly and helpful. You should take advantage of their occasional fund-raisers, such as their book sales too.

Due to a fire several years ago, the library recently underwent major renovations and looks brand spanking new. There are two floors full of books and DVDs, and the rooms are bright with lots of light and wooden floors. There were plenty of folks sitting in chairs and reading and also a bunch in a back conference-like room. If you enjoy fishing and ukuleles, you're in luck. Ukuleles are available to borrow, and the Phoenicia Library also has the unique Jerry Bartlett Memorial Angling Collection which is worth checking out, on the second floor. We spoke with a couple of librarians, and they were quite friendly and helpful. There is a bathroom off to the side of the circulation desk. Offering lots of books and activities, if I lived in Phoenicia, I'd be a regular fixture at the library, no doubt.

I asked for the quiet section because I'm studying for a very important exam and was told that upstairs is the area to be. However, I get upstairs and almost immediately I hear talking and loud talking and only from the staff. This is by far the noisiest library I've ever been to. I'm better off at home with my noisy 3 year old. If you need a quiet place to be or study, then this is not the place to be. I will continue to look in other areas for a quieter setting.

I stopped in and found the friendliest and most helpful staff., Joe shared some of the building's history as well as signed me up for a new library card. The next day I brought my two visiting grandkids so they could appreciate the history. The upstairs staff was also so friendly and shared more of the library's history. I love this community!

We've attended a couple of their scheduled events. The beautiful, modern, minimalist auditorium incorporates the surrounding landscape seamlessly. Excellent acoustics and high-end electronic equipment help the speakers and performers give their best. A recent sold-out lecture by Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer was inspiring, challenging and warmly entertaining. It was followed by a marvelous chamber music concert featuring a collection mostly contemporary works influenced by a connection with nature. Grace Farms' mission is to support nature, arts, justice, community and faith. It's a much-appreciated place to refocus and refuel in these difficult times.
