Nothing was open when we visited because of the Covid closures, but the grounds are very nice and the information was interesting

Being a history geek, I just can't start to explain how excited I was to find this site (I accidently left my passport in Tacoma) the "trail" to this spot is well marked on the road, and the park itself over looks the Hudson river. I got there right before 5 (that's when the park closes btw) ANF the staff offered to allow me to roam the bottom floor of the museum free of charge since I only had 10 mins to see things. It was a very informative spot and on the way to the car, I took the detour around the grounds ( it's not huge, so this wasn't hard). Also don't forget to get your passport stamp from the museum staff :) it's a great spot for families, and children or those that are into history.

    Beautiful view!

This site is beyond compare. Gorgeous views, excellent history and features that are unique. Check out the Tower of Victory and the actual home General George Washington lived in. Highly recommend!!

I visited General Washington's Headquarters on a Sunday afternoon when the museum was closed. There is no fee to enter and enjoy the grounds. On Sundays, the grounds are open from 1-5PM. The first remarkable thing I found on the way to the designated gated parking lot on the south side near the back of the park was some of the original cobble stone street showing through the blacktop. This made for a bumpy ride into the parking lot where you then park upon red bricked areas. The complex consists of these components: -statue of the Minuteman -headquarters -headstone of Uzal Knapp -sundial and a non-working well -museum (closed on Sundays) -monument with a statue of Washington which was gated and closed -large green space between the headquarters and the back of the lot with views of the Hudson River -park benches I found the park to be a peaceful place to visit away from the city.

Watch out for the address of this place: Google or Apple Maps will take you to the wrong place if you type in 84 Liberty St. I think Google takes you to "Liberty Street WH," an address is in the southern end of the city. The $4 tour of the Hasbrouck House is just ok. It takes about 20 minutes and the woman in period dress is very knowledgeable of the history of the place. There isn't that much to see inside though, and the things that are in there are just staged for the talk. Go for the information, not the house itself. I thought the museum was good. Packed with artifacts from the war. If you're interested in weaponry from the 1700s you'll like the second floor. The best part of the grounds are the grounds themselves; the view of the Hudson is great from here. No wonder why Washington chose this house.

It's usually one of the New York City bridges or the Tappan Zee (Yes, I know it's the Mario Cuomo. I don't care for that.) but I'm a little bit further north and so it's the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge which is officially named for US Representatives Hamilton Fish III and IV. There's something to be said for name recognition. The bridge carries Interstate 84 over the Hudson, originally a single lane in each direction that was built in 1963, the second bridge was built in 1980. It is a continuous truss bridge. There is a toll to cross the bridge with payment taken only by transponder or bill-by-mail. Transponders, such as my North Carolina QuickPass, are $1.65. I had no issue crossing the bridge even on a breezy day. [Review 1705 of 2024 - 550 in New York - 22728 overall]

Driving over has had no issues for us for the most part, although, here and there, we would hit traffic. Some of that pertained to rush hour. In the area that it's in, you got to expect it to be busy since it's located in a prime location where people travel to work and also vacation. It can be a hassle, especially merging onto I-84 from 9D which requires caution and vice versa. The view is good for the most part, but not the best due to the lane being far from the rail - although, on some occasions, the further right lane may be open to view it clearly. Drive safely and enjoy.

While the tour is timed at 2.5 hours...you spend closer to 1.5 hours on the island itself, factoring in the 30-minute boatride to and from the island. There was lots of parking available as the Metro Station's parking is free on weekends. I opted for the early 9:30am departure. I arrived around 9:05am and there were a few people there waiting. They started checking tickets and allowing people onto the boat at around 9:15am. The boat left on time at 9:30am. Tom was at the wheel and Jen was assisting. (Forgive me if I got the names wrong) Jen gave an overview of the sites, buildings and history of the Newburgh waterfront during the 20-minute boatride to the island. We arrived around 9:50, docked and climbed up some stairs to a waiting/dock area. We were then greeted by ___ who was our tour guide for the visit. She explained the history of the island as we made our way through the tour path...passing the castle, garden and museum. After the tour (about 30-40 minutes), visitors can explore the island on their own. There are a few areas that are accessible but not on the tour path, such as Wee Bay. I suggest exploring those areas as you will be rewarded with some amazing views! The museum is also small, but very informative...lots of little interesting facts about the island in there. Be sure to check it out. While the tour path itself is fairly flat, the other explorable areas are rocky and uneven. Its best to wear comfortable hiking/trail shoes if possible...otherwise, you will feel every sharp/uneven rock particalarly if wearing flat-bottomed shoes. There is a small shop there with snacks and some souvenirs. Bathrooms on the island. None on the boat. The group met up at the dock at around 11:30am to take the boat back to Beacon. A group was arriving at that time...likely the 11:00am tour. Overall I had a great time on the tour...learned a lot and captured some great views. Be sure to leave time afterward (or before) to explore other attractions in Beacon...such as the shop-filled Main Street.

Even with our high expectations we were still very impressed. It's a 500+ acre museum where most of the works are monumental and/or site-specific sculptures. The $25 admission is a great deal for so much amazing art, and the equally amazing grounds. We spent 6+ hours here but didn't get to see everything. We were also just on foot, but they do have trams and bike rentals. The weather was gorgeous on the day of our visit and we were having a ball wending our way around leafy trails and expansive emerald meadows, all interspersed with works of art. There was also a re-creation of a Norman chateau that served as an indoor museum and gift shop. Their cafe was excellent; I got the French onion burger with veggie patty (mushroom-based, great flavor, with melted Gruyere) and an iced cold brew, and the hubby got a grilled cheese, which was also good. We had such a great time; would definitely love to visit Sharon

The signage for the most part is good, but picking the lane to get to needs to be addressed ahead of time with a better sign, especially if getting off from I-87 to I-84, NY 17K, and 300. If that's followed, you'll get off the right exit. On the other hand, for someone who's not familiar with the area, the chances of going the wrong way are high. Since I've been utilizing this for several years, I have no issues. The only advice I would give is just take it slow and follow the signs carefully.
