Based off many personal recommendations, came here for my first purchase and came away impressed. It's a family run business that's been in the area for a long time, and it's stayed in the family. The guys behind the counter are very professional, knowledgeable, and welcoming to everyone walking through the front door. I've been to smaller shops and larger ones; I'd say that there's a good chance they can steer a customer in the right direction with stock on-hand, and absolutely will order from their distributor anything they don't. There's also a selection of used (yellow tag) items for sale, as well as consignment items (green tag) for sale as well. Like most gun store owners, they're a bit wary of new customers coming through the door, but after you get to know them, they will absolutely be there for you with any advice and help to make sure you're satisfied and safe. Really appreciate having a store like this, unlike some others in Connecticut that make you feel like you're doing them a favor being a customer. No range on the premises, there are some nearby such as Wolf's (which gets my thumbs up) where you can try out before you buy. read more

Came in on a weekend to get my girlfriend her first gun. Staff was very friendly is finding something for her that fit her needs and price point. Taught her a few things about gun safety, handling, and gun laws. Staff is very informed about firearms and laws and if they don't know the answer to a question or law off the top of their head they will get you the answer. They have a good selection of new and used firearms from pistols, rifles, and shotguns of popular brands. Got all the paperwork done without issue and got 10% off single boxes of ammo for a gun purchase. Great staff, made my girlfriends first time buying a gun great for her and comfortable with her purchase. Overall 5/5 would 100% get my business again. read more

Stopped in after a couple of years altering purchasing my Glock 19 here. I wanted to have a professional look over my firearm to make sure that everything was in order before heading to the range. Bill was very helpful reviewing each part of my Glock, looking it over for any concerns and address my questions about my firearm in a professional manner. We talked about the current climate and how politics affect purchases which I found interesting. We also looked at the Smith and Westen M&P firearms and discussed the pros and cons. Won't be purchasing a firearm anytime soon as I just go to the range but I'm glad that Newington Gun Exchange has my back when it comes to my firearm. The 5-star rating is no more, I too gave the Newington of old the 5-stars now in 2023, a 2-3-star rating at best, twice in the last 3-weeks i just got in the door when I heard someone (I'll get to him in a second) yelling from across the room Can I help you. the door was not even closed yet! This person, bald with glasses has the best Hoffmans attitude and the worst Newington personality ever. Any instructions you receive from him will be at the speed of light, good luck trying to remember what he said. All parts of the transaction from start to finish you had to listen to the attitude, only thing i can think is he is a new hire after the covid mess. Only because there aren't 6 stars!! What a pleasant experience! Called ahead to see if they had the firearm I was looking for, they did! Yay! I went in, was waited on in 5 mins by a wonderful young lady, knew her stuff, had me in and out in under an hour (that's record time by the way) the other big store in town it would take an hour to be waited on. I paid maybe $10 more then if I had gone elsewhere but here is why its money well spent: 1. My time is worth money, I had 4 more things to do that day 2. Its a small local business, not a chain 3. I came to Newington Gun Exchange straight from the state police after getting my pistol permit. I had seen a couple listings they had on Gunbroker for CZ's and decided to just go in person. I'm so glad I did! Buying your first firearm can be very intimidating, but the staff and atmosphere at Newington put me at ease. I was greeted immediately by Courtney (I think? ), and she took the time to answer every question I could throw at her with patience and utmost professionalism. Any anxiety I had going in was gone immediately. The entire process went smoother than anything I expected. The clincher for me, and what will keep me coming back to them in the future, was the gentleman working there (unfortunately didn't get his name) who wrote down several websites where I could purchase a quality holster. Most places I don't think would do this; that he actually cares enough to recommend buying from someone else because he didn't carry what I really needed. I thought that was pure class on his part; that my safety and comfort with carrying was more important than him making a sale. I witnessed one of the employees (who claimed to be the manager) berate, ridicule and embarrass an obviously new gun owner when he came in to discuss a problem he had with a previously purchased gun. This behavior prompted me to put down a pending purchase and leave. I will not give my cash to a business who treats customers in this fashion. In this day and age, with the current laws and politics in CT, we cannot afford to lose up and coming gun enthusiasts with arrogance and bullying behavior from people with obvious superiority complexes. This place was a little tricky to find at night via GPS. It's tucked away in a plaza, and you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it. There's a huge inventory, packed into a store too small to hold it all. All handguns appear to be used merchandise, with hand-written tags. No clear indication is made as to why two different guns of the same model are priced differently. Obviously it has to do with condition, but it's up to the buyer to figure out the specifics. This was one of the reasons I eventually declined to give them my business. The staff seemed a bit indifferent and preoccupied. I didn't get much in the way of a friendly vibe. They seem to cater strictly to the hardcore enthusiast, at least on the surface. A big plus is their hours. Newington Gun Exchange is open seven days a week, from 10 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturdays, and from 11 am to 4 pm on Sundays. Another plus is the fact that they offer perhaps the cheapest FFL transfer service in the area.... $30 (versus $50 at Hoffman's). They also apparently provide gunsmithing services. I had a horrible experience with newington gun exchange. Their service was horrible from start to finish. It started with sending my ffl info and the rude people who responded that they were too busy to get it by fax In the end I received an ar15 rifle with no bolt carrier group. They claim it was n the buffer tube when they sent it . Needless to say no bcg in packaging either. On the phone they said they would take care of it then I hear from the customer they said I was lying and took the bcg. I called to verify over the weekend and got more run around. Needless to say four days no calls were returned and no heads up on my bcg and if they were going to d the right thing like they told me. I called 5 times to get tracking and they were always too busy for that too. I was other told to call tomorrow or call back on Thursday to get a tracking number. I got nothing but the run a round from day one. This will be my first review of many on this place as well as detailed thoroughly on my blog and social networking sites. Stay away from these guys. There has to be a better option for you guys up in Newington, CT. read more

Truly one of the few places in Connecticut that doesn't discriminate based on skin color not that that's a factor for these guys. Born in the commonwealth of Puerto Rico a US territory sometimes you wonder when you're walking into a gun store whether you'll be treated fairly or not. I can attest that these guys are the most professional nicest individuals that I've ever talk to or had the pleasure of dealing with when it comes to personal protection and questions about fire on choices and accessories. Heard great stuff on the internet, was in the area, and had to check it out... The gps we (wife and I) were using led us to the street it was on, not to the building. Called, the girl working there came right out, and waved us down. Gotta say, I do appreciate that. Get into the place, GUNS, and lots of them. A little joke from the guy working there, "you were the ones who called", yep, i said "sorry we're closed"... Got me in the funnies, loosened us up a little bit. Now i'm feeling comfortable. Both workers say "if you want to look at anything, just ask"... We were able to walk around for a while, look at everything. They did not bother us one bit, and i say bother as in the usual follow around. I for one, can't stand that. Was able to look at every rifle they had there, price was on there, make, model, caliber. After the rifle's, we make our way to the massive hand gun selection they have. Again price, caliber, make, model... Love that. I don't want to have to ask, may be just me, but it makes me feel like an ass. Asked to see 5-7 hand guns, was never a problem, looked around again, found 2 back-ups (one for each of us), asked the girl working if she would make an out the door deal, comes back with a steal. We couldn't resist. I will definitely be making this my go to purchase store. Their prices are better than almost all of the gun shops i have been in. Much smaller and much less disorganized than the close by Hoffman's, but I have ALWAYS had a better experience here at Newington Gun Exchange. They actually acknowledge your presence and don't make you feel like you're not good enough to shop there. Both places sell guns, not the cure to cancer. It's a hobby, not a necessity. Great people to deal with, easily my favorite shop in the state. Their prices aren't always the lowest, but they're always reasonable. I try to do all my purchases with them because they're great guys to deal with. There tend to be three types of gun shop sales guys: A) The "sales factory" kinda guys who will tell you anything to make a sale even if it's a terrible choice for the buyers use. These types tend not to be very knowledgeable either. B) Cranky old gun counter guy. Knows a lot, might be a bit opinionated, and intimidating for newbies. Also incredibly common type in small shops. C) The honest and approachable type who listen to what you're saying even when you're wrong and give you constructive feedback. Most shops have one or two counter workers like this, at most. Somehow NGX seems to be full of the latter types. All great people to deal with, which is fantastic for what can be a very important purchase. read more

Love these guys. After being taken advantage of by the owners at Hoffman's I decided to give this place a try. The shop isn't as big or as glamorous as Hoffman's, but the guys here are really warm and friendly people who will talk to you for hours about guns and ammo. If they don't have what you need in stock, they will gladly order it for you straight from the factory. A few of my friends have taken their pistol permit courses here and really enjoyed the classes as well. Personnel are extremely personable and do not have the type of attitude you may find at Cabelas or Hoffmans. They take time to explain all sorts of details about each gun and the pros and cons of different models. No pressure to buy and a good selection for a small store. Very reasonable prices. I had never been there and they seem to cater to the "regulars" who walk in. The store was a little busy so I'll cut them a break. I dropped off an old shotgun to see if it could be repaired. I asked for a quote before doing any work. I was surprised to get a call 3 weeks later, (I assumed a month or more) saying they could fix it for $90. I said "Ok, do it", they said, "its done". They missed the whole quote first, my cut off point was about $150 so no harm. All in all a knowledge staff that I'd recommend for repairs, just be sure to clear up "Quote First" if that's what you want. read more

I've never seen a worse salesman in my life. I guess I got the wrong person. When I first walked into the store I barely had time to acclimate and look around when the odd guy ( you'll know who he is when you go in ) just about barked "Can I Help you!" I put exclamation because it wasn't a question. I told him what I was interested in and he pointed to a cabinet and said "if we have them they be in there" I did notice other salespeople would take the time to actually show customers the guns, and discuss them, not this freak. He just walked the opposite way. I did find the gun that was the model when I got the guy's attention he took it up - again not a word. no dialogue. I've bought three guns there but probably won't buy another. Barking at customers is weird and if your staff has personality disorders- train them. I regret buying from them entirely because of the southern weirdo. Maybe he should try some form of medication to take his edge off, or a vacation or both. read more

There was a woman in the store who knew next to nothing about guns and was interested in purchasing one. They spent 45 minutes teaching her about different types of guns and how to use them. At many gun stores (including Hoffman's) the sales people have a snobbish attitude towards anyone who isn't knowledgeable about firearms, women, and minorities but not at Newington Gun Exchange! read more
