There's not much in the way of facilities here, apart from a wee snack bar at the departures entrance that serves fairly mediocre coffee. Mind you, things might improve sometime in the future as they are raising money for airport development by forcing you to pay an 'Airport Development Fee' of £5 for the privilege of leaving the place - the first UK airport I've been to that has done this, and something that FlyBe seems to have forgotten to mention during their online check-in process. Or else it was in such small print that I didn't see it on the web page. Why can't they just get the airlines to levy that via the ticket price at the time? It wasn't exactly publicised at the airport either as we walked straight past the pay machines.
Having passed through the very plain-looking door to the departure security area, we were then sent back out by a very officious security man to pay our five pounds. On our return, he then forced Herself to squash her handbag into her cabin luggage, which although technically correct according to FlyBe rules hadn't happened on the way down; then we were subjected to the most rigorous security check that I have experienced at any airport, national or international, in the last few years. Shoes & belts off, bags emptied, pat-down, the works. Everything apart from a cavity search. Small airports seem to be the worst at this - maybe the staff don't get enough practice, or they're just bored and take delight in stressing out their passengers?
Whatever, it's made me less inclined to fly to this airport in future. Meh. read more
