I am a very low-maintenance guy and if it weren't for the heat, the hassles of shampooing and drying, and the stigma of being "unprofessional" when your hair is unkempt and wild, I wouldn't even bother with haircuts. But when I find a good barber, I suddenly turn into this metrosexual who couldn't resist going in for a trim every now so often. That is exactly what happened when I moved to UP Village and chanced upon Newsbarbers Jr.
Newsbarbers Jr. is like your typical neighborhood barber - four barber's chairs, mirrors, air-conditioning, the works. But what sets Newsbarbers Jr. apart from other neighborhood barber shops is its dedication to keeping the premises spotless. Every strand of hair that is lopped off their customers are immediately swept away and collected, out of sight and out of mind. The place always smells very clean, surgical almost. The counters are pristine, and even the barbers are very well groomed in their clean and crisp uniforms.
I have this rule that I wouldn't ever pay for a haircut if it costs more than a McDonalds Big Mac. A haircut from this barber shop is a measly P100 (tips optional), yet I always emerge from their shop feeling like a movie star. There is nothing fancy in their technique. It is just a good old cut that comes from the barbers' experience. I have gone for haircuts here for as many time as I could remember, and each instance produced really satisfying results. However, what has cemented this as my favorite barbershop is the fleeting yet heavenly massage that comes after your haircut. I am a sucker for a good back rub, and the barbers go out of their way to slowly ease your knots and tough spots. They cover the scalp, the forehead, the nape and the face. They would also trim my mustache with no extra charge, which always turns out so well that it makes me feel terrible, making me tip way more than I should, but hey, that's good customer service for you. read more
