They're local...and for 28 years they've covered businesses and individuals across Tennessee in brief, yet fairly comprehensive segments on a weekly show titled "Tennessee Crossroads." This timely and entertaining program of vignettes is hosted by Joe Elmore and the informative, fascinating, and revealing segments showcase everything from restaurants to museums, historic places, and craftspersons with unique skills. And they cover Tennessee from Memphis to Kingsport, Chattanooga to Union City. NPT is international ...carrying programming from BBC (most likely you've heard of Downton Abbey), or perhaps you're a fantastic amateur cook. If so, you should watch the Great British Baking Show. Oh what skills these amateur bakers have! And what polite and spot-on critiques of their impressive culinary work. NPT also carries other special international programs from time to time. NPT is arts-minded...opening for you a "weekly window" on visual and performing arts. There are history programs, commentaries from around the globe, and music from Bluegrass to Classical to Rock and Roll. And how about a trip down memory lane with throwbacks to music from the 50's 60's and 70s? Yep...hear it right here during special weeks. There is virtually no subject NPT hasn't covered...news, social and political commentary, entertainment, drama, Children's programming (a rich history of that, indeed!) and so much more. Take time to check out their scheduling. And if you're too busy to watch during air time, try streaming at your convenience via NPT Passport. I'm fairly certain you'll find something of interest: Gardening, Comedy, Music, Town Hall Meetings, Holiday Specials, and so much more! Best of all....it's free! Where does this all take place? Well, right in your own home or on your mobile device for starters. But where does it originate? Some of the programming is created right here in Nashville at their studios on Rains Avenue. That's where I recently attended a special premier showing of an NPT documentary, "Voyage of Adventure: Retracing Donelson's Journey" - a glimpse into the path to the founding of Nashville. So informative and entertaining! You can even rent NPT studios to create your own program or special! And NPT is always on the lookout for Volunteers to help with a variety of weekly tasks and special events. Check their site out online for more info. Adventure, suspense, comedy, and information of all kinds are right at your fingertips. Just click the appropriate button on your TV remote or personal electronic device and you're in.

I love watching America's Test Kitchen on Saturday mornings and Masterpiece Classic on Sunday nights. There is a little bit of everything offered here, from cartoons and kids programs to adult education and just plain old entertainment. I write this review knowing full well that this used to be Vanderbilt's WRVU college radio station…read morebefore they sold it. But that was before my time by a few months. So there. I have only been listening for a few weeks, but it's been wonderful. I really don't listen to much commercial music -- pop, country, hip-hop, or otherwise. And even though I'm a Berkeley grad, I still never listened to their KPFA station and their indie music. Just not my thing. I'm also not an NPR fan. A former coworker played it all day. While it didn't drive me nuts, I was always playing podcasts in my cubicle next door to keep me from hearing most of it. I personally don't want to be emotionally invested in news -- I like it in short bursts. Having just the top news played for a few minutes at the top of the hour is more my style. So, this station has just the perfect blend of classical and news for me. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Don't get me wrong: tech is great and has afforded much ease and innovation. But I think having it seep into every portion of our lives can be destructive. Case in point: getting up in the morning. I can count on both hands the number of times I have used my phone as my alarm clock. I know the capability is there but a.) I don't like having my phone on 24/7 and b.) I don't sleep with my phone in my bedroom. I use an alarm clock. Still. Well, I'm not completely part of the stone age. It's a radio alarm clock, not the shrill type with the bell that forces you awake with a jolt and a rapidly beating heart. I ease into my morning/day with music. At least, I like to do so. Nashville being Nashville, I was a bit surprised (initially) at my lack of radio options. I could wake to NPR (I enjoy listening to it but the dulcet tones of Ari Shapiro aren't likely to wake me and get me out of bed). I could listen to country (the genre has grown on me but I can't admit to being a fan). Sports radio (in my world) can only be taken in very (very!) small doses. Even finding adequate pop/r&b options on FM was a bit of a challenge. I found myself switching wake up options every few months. And then I heard it: the Pixies. Followed by Ella Fitzgerald. When I heard Bela Fleck I knew that I had found my station. To my ears, WXNA is an extension of the college radio I remembered with rose-sounding headphones. It's a diverse, volunteer station helmed by people who love music. Plain and simple. There are all manner of shows and I have taken to listening to it far beyond what pops up on the display at early o'clock. Some of my faves: The Jazz Connection, D-Funk, Highs In the Mid 70s, The Inconsiderate Mixtape, Soul Of The City, and Nashville Jumps. Of particular note is when I woke up to 'The Goonies 'R' Good Enough' shortly before the Academy Awards broadcast. WXNA showcases exactly what music should sound like in The Music City. It's diverse. It's eclectic. It's organic. It's really good radio. If you have solely locked on to satellite offerings or playlist-only music to get you through your day, might I suggest a change? Might I suggest a locally-minded street-level-curated journey into the days in which you discovered your musical tastes and how they would be informed? 101.5 was a happy discovery for me. I still listen to the radio. In fact, I listen to the radio at night as I am winding down from the…read moreday and preparing for bed. You know what? I'll go one further: I use the radio as my alarm. Yep. At night I turn my phone off and ignore it until I have to turn it on for the day. Until then, it's off. I don't charge it. I don't check it during the night. And, looking at it is not the first thing I do when I wake up. So, without a phone for distraction and an alarm, what is someone to do? Use a radio alarm and start the day in a good mood. I 'discovered' 102.1 (The Ville!) by accident as I was tuning my radio away from a nearby station. As I did so, I heard 'Doo-Wop (That Thing).' I hadn't heard that for a minute, so I stayed on the dial. Then I heard 'Real Love.' By the time 'If' played, I knew I had a new favorite, local station. As odd as it is to write, '90s R&B is now a part of 'old school.' Sigh. As generations have noted before, these kids don't know what music is, so to have a station that plays everything from Sam Cooke to Earth, Wind & Fire to Amy Winehouse and can go six songs deep without the first 'let me step away and do something else before the next song comes on' is a modern day mass media miracle. But, The Ville doesn't *only* play (90s) R&B. There's plenty of funk, soul, pop, and melodious hip-hop (not the one-track mumble nightmare the chirrun listen to these days). Nashville radio can skew a bit one-sided (shocking, I know). It's beyond refreshing to find a station like 102.1 The Ville. It puts a pep in my step and a smile on my face. From The Supremes to Stevie and from Chaka to Ciara, I'm so glad to know there's a station that can keep me engaged from morning until night. I don't even mind the incessant station identification. Even *that's* a bit of a refreshing callback.

They are so diverse that i stopped making tapes and at times i would suffer musical whiplash with the changes in genre when the Djs were obviously enjoying themselves (Alice in Chains followed by Bobby Darin?), great stuff! Now thanks to the Intrawebs i can still hear my beloved WRLT streaming to Columbus Ohio... Keep on Rocking!

Lightning 100 Radio-100.1 FM, Nashville's Independent Radio station. This radio station does more…read morethan broadcast great music, they are out and about all over town putting on shows, showcasing artists, and supporting the diverse local Nashville scene. They make it possible for up and coming artists to be known on the scene by playing their tracks on the air and putting them on a showcase. The Local Lightning Spotlight is a feature that showcases two local artists each week by playing their music between 2:40pm and 8:40pm for the entire week of the Spotlight. This is a great amount of exposure for any up and coming act. This kind of programing can only happen at an independently owned station. When you listen in to this program you can actually get an idea of what is going on in the clubs around town, and what bands are hot to go see. Another great show that makes Lightning 100 a five star radio station is the Sunday Night Live Broadcast of a Nashville band. The show broadcasts live from one of the many great venues in town. Recently the shows have been held at 3rd and Lindsley. This way you can see if the band sounds as good live as they do on their record.
