Known as Hollywood of the South™, Covington has become a mecca for the television and film industry. Dukes of Hazard (1978) You can see the General Lee on Elm Street in Covington jumping 157 feet into the air in the first episode. The Cannonball Run (1980) The city of Covington had to remove power lines around the square before filming the iconic plane landing scene. Friday the 13th VI (1986) The iconic hockey masked killer could be found stalking the Covington area and surrounding towns during this installment. My Cousin Vinny (1991) This Oscar winning film utilized many locations around Covington and Newton County to create the setting of a small town in Alabama. ‍ In the Heat of the Night (1988-1994) Covington was known as Sparta and home to Police Chief William Gillespie and police detective Virgil Tibbs in this long running crime drama. Black Dog (1997) Featuring Patrick Swayze, Meatloaf and Randy Travis, Black Dog disguised Covington as North Carolina for this truck driving, gun hauling action film. Remember the Titans (2000) This inspirational film starring Denzel Washington was partially filmed in Covington. Sweet Home Alabama (2002) Sweet home Covington, Georgia was one of the filming locations for this 2002 romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon. Halloween 2 (2009) The Myers House and Haddonfield Town Square were really historical Covington transformed for this Rob Zombie horror film remake. ‍ The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017) Covington transformed into "Mystic Falls" for 8 seasons of The Vampire Diaries. Footloose (2010) The courtroom scene in Footloose was filmed in the historic courthouse on Covington's square. Flight (2011) A church was erected and a broken aircraft was placed in Green Valley Farms fields, just a few miles outside of downtown Covington, to create the plane crash scene. Selma (2014) The iconic courthouse served as the Hotel Albert in the historical film recounting Dr. Martin Luther King's bid to secure voting rights for African Americans in Alabama. Vacation (2014) The sorority house scene in Vacation was filmed at one of Covington's many beautiful historic homes. ‍Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors (2015) Covington was the perfect picturesque backdrop for the television movie inspired by Dolly Parton's life story. Dr. Sleep (2018) The sequel to Stephen King's "The Shining" was filmed in Covington. The Jungle Cruise (2018) This live action movie inspired by the ride at Disney features Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Emily Blunt. Sweet Magnolias (2020-present) shows small town Southern lifestyles/stores. Other popular films shot in Covington include "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay," "The Accountant," and "Ant-Man and the Wasp."

Mystic Falls Tours in Covington is a dream for Vampire Diaries fans, as you come across countless memorabilia from the long-running, cult following CW show, AND get to see the real homes and filming locations that the disturbingly-beautiful cast stepped foot on over the years. Stop by the Mystic Grill for a nice lunch and the gift shop directly beneath the clock tower after the tour for the ending to the perfect day.

Which was really cool to see the memorabilia from various shows that were filmed in the town. They have a tram type bus that fit four to a row. (Really tight seating and probably my least favorite of the tour was the seating.). The tour guides are very knowledgeable and had personal experience with watching the filming and/or being extra's. They stop at three different spots and even stop at one home where the owners came out to talk with us. Pretty neat!

Family favorite! We took the kiddos as summer activity and they loved everything about the farm…read more Seeing the animals, mining for geodes, picking strawberries and trying as many homemade goodies as possible! The strawberries were huge, juicy and super sweet. It was a bit muddy but that's honestly the best time to pick them. As a side note the berries are across the street and with Newton County slowly growing crossing the street can be a bit hectic. Thankfully the kids we were with were between the ages of 6-9 so it was a bit easier to cross the street. But none the less still hectic. We went on a Saturday during peak hours which the kids enjoyed because there were so many new possible friends to be made while playing on the on-site playground. Plenty of photo worthy backgrounds, plenty of ripe berries and 10/10 worth every penny. Everyone that worked on the day we visited were super sweet and attentive. Not to mention patient. They really enjoy the service that they provide to the community. We also stop by later in the year for the pumpkin patch as well. This is a family favorite and generational stop for my family!

We came here for their second annual lavender festival. Parking was pretty full on their gravel…read morelot, but it was no problem finding a spot. All of their other farm features were open during the festival, such as srawberry picking, gem mining, and of course the shop full of goodies. There were also outside vendors set up, farmer's market style, and a musician entertaining us all. We went to the lavender field only to find that you had to pay for the picking back in the shop. No worries as the line was not that long. We got our PVC tubing and clippers (both provided by them), and started to pick. There was a good selection and the field seemed full. After about 30 minutes and a lot of photo ops, we were done and they wrap and tie your lavender for you. It was a great experience! We then went to the shop to get some food, but all they had were drinks and dessert type items, so main course foods. There is an opportunity there for sure!
