The negative review left here re: the 50D I believe to be misleading, first of all the price was more than the initial estimate due to the state of the camera which was not apparent until it had been dismantled, it required a complete new top housing and other work. We did contact the customer to explain this and asked for his permission at the new price, he told us to proceed at the revised cost. This particular repair we did have to send to another repair company because of the issues it had, hence the time delay also parts had to be ordered from Canon which also takes time. The customer did bring the camera back and told us of the dust behind the LCD and focusing screen so we sent it back to the repair agent who looked at it and they attended to the cleaning even though they did not originally dismantle the LCD assembly. The other issue was the rubber grips on the body. Over a period of time the rubber grips tend to stretch due to normal handling, this is common to many cameras similar to this model. The only answer is replacement of all the rubber grips but this would have incurred even more cost. The very nature of the material and the stretched condition of them makes it difficult to make them look and fit like new, normal glues don't work on them so double sided tape is the only answer. We did get the camera to good working order and resolved his subsequent issues and feel that his negative review is not the full story. We have been in business for over 60 years and have a lot of knowledge with camera equipment and customer satisfaction is a high priority with us but a review like this will damage our long standing reputation. With regard to Anthony S, reviews of this kind are worthless if he doesn't say how long he has been waiting (under 4 weeks is virtually unheard of). It is also important for everybody concerned to understand that the number of camera repair companies willing to even attempt to repair a 42-year-old camera is small and getting smaller by the minute! In cases of this kind, spare parts may be very difficult or impossible to obtain - if the camera needs more than a CLA (cleaning, lubrication and adjustment), cannibalisation of another example for spare parts is the only choice. I have used Newton Ellis for several dozen repairs (probably in excess of 50), mainly Leicas and view camera lenses, and quite a few examples from my collection of Kodak Retinas. In almost all cases, a good repair resulted first time, in the remainder of cases problems were resolved at a second attempt without fail. It is a fact of life in the camera repair trade that people who are good and are willing to tackle out-of-the-way repairs are going to have a backlog of work - if you are a pro and need your camera all the time to make money, then buy a top-of-the-range Nikon or Canon and use these makers' good, fast, efficient and very expensive pro services! I rely on Newton Ellis to keep my fleet of rather elderly pro-level cameras running, which allows me to continue photographing at reasonable cost. There are numerous other companies that can do part of what they do, such as a CLA of a leaf shutter, but when it comes to things like Kodak Retinas, they are virtually on their own apart AFAIK from a guy in New Zealand. Just had my Canon 40D back after a collision with a tree! It now looks as good as new. I've used these people for many years now and they know what they are talking about, they are also good with lenses as well as cameras. It may be a small shop but it is packed with spare parts and knowledge. It did take a while to get it back but they had to get some new parts from Canon, well worth the wait. read more

To day I was able to pick up my 50D which this shop has had for the last three months not only that but the repair was double the price quoted. It also had to be returned due to grime on the sensor,dust in the viewfinder and behind the LCD plus the grips looked like they were put back on by a 5 year old with sticky tape. I accumulate all sorts of elderly but excellent cameras and photo equipment. Newton Ellis are able to cope with all sorts of odd defects and get equipment which is often over 50 years old back in full working order. Even with difficult faults they produce the goods. They aren't the first company I turn to for a repair they're the only ones. read more

I have been searching for a reliable repair shop who can look after my Canon 5D and my old and trusted Canon F1, these guys fit the bill. The older stuff can take a few weeks to be done but it was done right. read more
