The quality has improved greatly and I still love the specials on the sidewalk, and then I venture inside. Many products are kept in the fridge and the lettuces are deliciously crisp. You can even buy fresh fruit salad ready to eat. The size of the avocados huge, and a bargain at two for $5. I have discovered that many vegetables are home grown, and the red capsicums are firm and tasty. Out the front you can buy potted herbs, fruit, huge bags of onions and the list goes on. There is a large assortment of flowers, and Natalie is talented making beautiful arrangements if there is nothing you want from the huge selection of bouquets and boxes. The prices are excellent without compromising on quality. The new owners are friendly and helpful, and I'm so happy that this place is my local. I can see them getting busier and busier once people know how great this shop is in the Dernancourt Shopping Centre.

The shop is open to the general public who can buy both the amazing array of La Vera cheeses along with all sorts of other gourmet treats. Visit the shop on almost any day and you'll be joined at the counter by legions of Italian ladies. In fact the chief language spoken inside the shop is Italian. Not being familiar with the language myself, I brought the tone down considerably with my Aussie strine but the whole experience made me feel like I was temporarily transported to an Italian marketplace. Of their range of products, the cheeses I recommend are the La Vera Ricotta which head cheese maker Pino says is best eaten on fresh bread and with a drizzle of honey - his version of the breakfast of champions. I love the La Vera Mascarpone. It is quite simply to die for. In fact you may want to visit your local GP first to get your cholesterol checked before eating. Their mozzarella balls both large and small, are the creamiest and most divine you could experience. And if you are a lover of blue cheese, you just can't go past the La Vera Adel Blue and the Adel Blue Spreadable. Here's a secret tip - if you go to the ABC's website for The Cook and the Chef, and search the recipes for Fig and Blue Cheese Tartlets, Maggie Beer's recipe uses the La Vera products. With that said, it's refreshing to see a recently opened fruit and veg market like George and Ben's. Out the front you have your "seconds", that is fruit and veg that isn't of the highest grade. A lot of fruit and veg stores do this, and there's nothing wrong with 90% of this fruit. I personally buy from the front of the store if I need some cheap fruit to make a smoothie with. As my girlfriend is on a diet I'm required to comply and join her lest I face her wrath. I have no problems doing this and that's probably in my best interests... Anyway, enough about that... Venture inside and you'll see "the good stuff". Fresh fruit and vegetables representing all the colours of the rainbow. Not only do they have some quality merchandise, but they encourage the use of boxes rather than putting the items into a plastic bag. There's nothing wrong with being environmentally friendly!

There is produce along the walkway also. I'm a bit fussy when it comes to fresh fruit and veg. My disappointment is with the quality of goods under the main shelter. They appeared to look like seconds with fruit bruised and limp vegetables. I picked up many items to look at and placed them back. I bought some bananas for a dessert. As for the garlic I couldn't find any Australian so left empty handed (except for the bananas).

Their prices are consistently more than the supermarket, however their quality and freshness is lower. I was keen on some cherries but on closer inspection they were near to rotting. Their other food was unremarkable. I see little point in paying more for inferior quality. Their apples were particularly pricey. Only on a few items are they cheaper, like for spring onions (which always seem to be expensive in supermarkets). They have a small range of pre-packaged nuts, but the prices on these are not great either. All in all, a disappointing greengrocer which can't compete with any supermarket.
