The prices are pretty competitive down near Grote St, and you can easily duck back and forth between stalls, choosing the best prices and quality. The stock here is of reasonable quality, although be sure to give everything the touch and smell check. I once bought some sweet potatoes here without carefully inspecting, and they were actually quite mouldy. The great thing about buying fruit and veg from small family stalls like this is if you really want, you can probably find out where the stuff is grown, and other details like that.

At the Hahndorf Vegetable Garden they try their best to source all of their stock from local suppliers. This family business has grown over the years. They recently refurbished the store and made it a lot larger and offer many more products. It has almost turned into a small supermarket. They stock flours, pastas, sauces, rices, everything you need really. If you want to avoid the big supermarket chains, this is your one stop shop now. The only thing they don't stock is toilet paper, toothpaste, cleaning fluids and the like. All of the produce I have purchased from here have been fresh and have lasted a long time. I sometimes find when I purchase vegetables from the Supermarket they spoil fast. I would like to point out the best produce that I have found at this store is the fruit. In particular the stone fruit when it is in season. You can smell the fruit when you walk in the store. My father always taught me that if your fruit smells good, it will generally taste good. And so far that theory has proven to be correct. So if you are in the hills and need a fruit fix, check it out!

Being in the hills, it's convenient for us and has all our favourite hills brands so we visit at least once every month or so; but we have friends who venture up from the burbs to get bulk veggies. They also sell lump charcoal, plants, and have a baked good section out the front. Worth a visit, and while you're up there, grab some local Adelaide Hills wine from one of the wineries nearby.

The range of leeks, spring onions, usual herbs and veges are absolutely cheap, plentiful and the shop assistant is always willing to give you an extra discount if you buy more. If I'm not mistaken, any purchases above $20 receives a free tray of eggs. Imagine all the gorgeous Spanish omelette you could make with those cheap 99cents onions. Ah, perfect in so many ways. This is the first time I have visited these markets, I've been a member of the Willunga Farmers Market for a number of months now and having recently move closer to Adelaide needed to find my new organic fix. Not disappointed in the slightest. With a few more stalls then it's Willunga counterpart you are bound to fill your fridge in a jiffy. The veggies and fruit are outside and your meats and baked goods are kept cool undercover. The buzz is hectic with some stalls requiring a ten minute wait in a line. I admit I did not take up this waste of time as anywhere with a line does not deserve my time or attention. This is generally just my motto for pubs and clubs but if the line is too long then it's goodbye wait times. The produce in these stalls did appear nicer and more varied but this will be for testing in later visits. You can become a member for $65 which will get you a discount of 10%. The produce is already quite cheap as you have cut out the middle man who takes his cut at the shops so purchasing a membership will only make your experience even better and a few weekly buys and you've have recouped this money within a few months anyway.
