The Works offers both Men's and Women's styling; it is a full service salon. There are places that may do a cut for a lot less, however, I was looking for a stylist and salon that could offer a more refined experience with attention to detail. When I arrived, my stylist greeted me on time and confirmed the services I was after before taking you to the sinks. Another salmon staff provided a relaxing shampoo and conditioner. The lady who cut my hair, Angelica, has worked independently for the shop for over 10 years. She was very friendly and my hair was just how I expected when she was through. A very affable personality, and on the plus side pretty cute to boot, he clearly wants to provide the ultimate 'total' experience in hairdressing. He does a good job at suceeding. When you walk into the salon, you almost feel like you're walking into a lounge bar - there's great music playing, the staff are dressed in their best rags, you're asked if you'd like a drink. I found my stylist to be very attentive. I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted so she was there to give advice and show me colour options, but she also allowed me to take my time. After I plumped for lowlight and cut, I had a wonderful wash and massage, almost falling asleep! The cut and colour took around 2 and a half hours altogether (I have a lot of hair) and I was ecstatic with the overall look. It's one of the best haircuts I've had (but that being said, I only go to the hairdresser once in a blue moon). The whole experience was worth the £70 total, the look lasted months.

As someone who's experimented with my own for years, bleaching it to within an inch of its life, cropping it pixie short, colouring it blue, playing around with a fauxhawk and trying out every home hair colour under the sun, I'm the kind of girl who walks into a hairdresser and says to the stylist, 'What do you want to do with it?' Thus I am the perfect meat for these trainees. Forsaking my beloved Alex for the purposes of Yelp, I decided that if I was having something simple done like going a few inches shorter but keeping my regular style, I might as well get it done here. Now, I've heard plenty of horror stories about hair colouring, so only take my word for the whole cut process. I myself am only using semi permanents until I go grey, and that hopefully won't be for a lo-ho-hoooong time. Like a tattoo salon, this place makes you sign a waiver so you can't really whinge if it all goes doolally. After all, these are trainees but they're under the supervision of a manager. You're not used as a test subject, don't worry. In fact the teachers make a point of telling the students not to veer too far away from the style the customer already has. You'll be asked what you want and the teacher will talk the junior through which styles suit which face shapes and what not. You're unlikely to get something alien and artsy, in fact it'll probably be a very classic cut. Your hair will be washed with their own brand shampoos and conditioners which smell and feel amazing, and then the assigned student will cut your hair in stages which takes a good while longer than regular hairdressers as the supervisors have to check what's been done and offer improvements. If you can, pick up a flyer or magazine advert that says Toni and Guy require hair models because that means you'll get a free cut. If not it can be anything from a fiver to £15 if you're going more extravagant with colour and perhaps a perm, but it's way cheaper than most salons. If money's short and I'm not feeling too in love with my hair, I'm happy to take the risk and come here.

The colourists are excellent, I've been having my hair professionally coloured for 12years and it has never been as long-lasting, vibrant and healthy looking as now. The cut is superb, creative but not bonkers. These guys actually cut my past shoulder length hair into a short bob, and even hubby (a lover of long hair and bob nay-sayer) loves it and doesn't want me to grow it back 'nuff said? The decor is rather lovely, it's a period building with period features here and there to keep your eye occupied whilst having your hair washed, and the coffees tasty. I needed my barnett sorting in preparation for a party and thought I'd try somewhere new; I went along to Retro, having booked an appointment earlier that day, and as I sat waiting for my stylist I began to worry that the outcome would be disastrous and my terrible new do would ruin the photographs of the evening's celebrations. However the professional manner of my hairdresser, Rebbecca, as she discussed my desired style and how she would create it, settled my nerves a little. In under an hour I had had a consultation, had my hair washed, (with the most divine products; the shampoo smells gorgeous0 layered and styled with a new full fringe, and blow dried beautifully with big bouncy curls. My hair is very long and thick and in my experience, hairdressers tire or simply bore when styling it, but Rebbecca was patient and did a great job; I was thrilled with the final result. The services are very reasonably priced as well; £22.50 for mine. My only complaint is the somewhat hazardous salon chairs! The protruding foot rests caused a couple of trips and a near concussion as another client took a tumble into the metal stair rail!

Ive used a couple of stylists here and they have all been good - my favourite is Annmarie, who is a great colourist, and takes her time to make sure you are happy with her suggestions before she starts. I just wish she worked Saturdays! Expect to pay about £30 for a cut and blow, and approx £50 for half head foils and cut.
