We tried the blind tasting menu which was pretty tasty and great value. It is mostly a fully blind menu though you can tell the server if there is anything you don't like and preferences you may have. Service was a bit slow but friendly. We got: - compressed watermelon, spinach, feta salad - kapow cauliflower - orecchiette with Italian sausage (off menu) - tempura fried cheese curds - spiced roasted corn + coconut soup - ginger snap crusted crispy beef short rib - confit duck leg - P.M.C (peanut butter & milk chocolate mousse with caramelized bananas and marshmallow fluff) - deep fried cheesecake pops - dirty bottom cocktail and cherry bourbon sour cocktail Considering all the different food we got, most of the dishes were excellent. Prepared fresh with good ingredients and technique. Our favourites were the compressed watermelon salad, kapow cauliflower and the duck confit. On to dishes with room for improvement. The corn soup was extremely salty but had a good underlying spice balance. I think the fried cheese curds would benefit from a sharper spicy/sour sauce rather than sweet dominated one. The beef short rib was a very interesting pairing with the ginger snap crust which sometimes overpowered the savoury elements so I recommend adding the extra mustard and reduction that they serve on the side. The marshmallow fluff on the PMC was too sweet for us and didn't have any banana flavour. Lastly, the outside of both our cocktail glasses were super sticky, likely spilled over on its way to our table but just felt a bit unhygienic. I absolutely love NeXt, and would frequent more often if it were closer to home. Having said that, the hubby works close by the restaurant and we've been holding onto a gift card that we've had for the past couple of years, and finally got around to using it up. The great thing about their gift cards is they never expire! So awesome! We decided to order a little bit of everything for dinner and enjoy it at home. For mains we got the Toasted warm E.V olive oil drenched bread, Tempura fried St. Albert cheese curds, and the hubby got the blackies crispy chicken. I didn't try his chicken, but he gave it 5 thumbs up. I LOVED the toasted warm drenched bread. It was super flavorful and really enjoyed the pickled tomatillo that it came with. The tempura cheese curds were amazing and came with a side of maple sriracha dipping sauce. It was soooooo good. Unfortunately they were all stuck together by the time we got it home, but the flavor was still unreal. We also got all the desserts on the menu. The Ginger vanilla creme brulee, Spiced ancho Chile milk molten drink and the apple tartine, which was my favorite. Although I was not a fan of the black truffle ice cream it came with. I am not a truffle fan one bit, but the caramel sauce it came with was un real. So good. It was a very nice evening enjoying this meal at home. Excellent option for date night, and likely a night out with friends as well. Nice low light vibe, but not to the point where you are struggling to see the space or your party. Place gives a nice feeling of balance, in that it feels like a nicer night out, but nobody is "dressed to nines" and it definitely feels relaxed once you are there. We came here for our anniversary and had one of our favorite date night's ever! Our waiter, Dale, was excellent. Had a very welcoming energy about him, was super knowledgeable on the menu, and made for great conversation towards the end of the meal. Everything we ordered was delicious. Since we were celebrating we went all out with wine, starters, entrees, and desserts. Literally everything we ordered was fantastic, and delivered in a timely manner. My friend and I went to Next. We shared the rib eye tartar and I had the Blackie's crispy chicken. The tartar was delicious, but the crispy chicken was average. There was a bit too much sauce for me and I felt there needs to be some vegetables or side dish to break up the taste. To be honest, the sauce on the chicken taste like something I can make at home. However, the service was great and the staff was friendly. It was an experience as it's well known in Stitsville but I would probably would try other places before going back. read more

Came here the day they reopened after being closed because of COVID-19 restrictions. In terms of safety precautions, I felt very safe coming here. The tables were all well spaced out and they limit a max of 4 guests per table. They have contact tracing, plenty of hand sanitizers around, and take your temperature upon arrival. The staff were all great and friendly. The chef made appearances for what I can guess were for those who ordered the Chef's tasting menu. This was our first visit. Needless to say, we were very impressed and want to come back. The food was delicious! The portion sizes were larger than what I was expecting, which was not a bad thing. So for the price, totally worth it! I like their restaurant concept that all foods are meant to be shared. My husband and I shared 3 dishes. Maybe choose wisely for what guests you bring with you during COVID-19. I'm not sure if this would be a great place for vegetarians. Ordered this prepared meal for my girlfriend's birthday and it exceeded my expectations for a takeout meal. We especially enjoyed the ribeye tartar and duck leg confit. Friends invited us to NeXT, and our experience was, well so-so. I keep in mind that this is COVID, and that maybe some of the let downs we had are related, but... We opted not to go with the blind tasting (the lovely lady serving us told us it was their specialty, but we wanted to share and opted to order more tapas style which we were told works wonderfully..and it did). Here's what we got: Kapow Cauliflower Oysters Pork Belly Bao Buns Fried Cheese Curds Tartare Lamb quesadilla Lucky Duck Curry Guajillo Prawns Sea scallops The tartare, cauliflower and Bao Buns were truly amazing! The three mains (duck curry, prawns, and scallops) were the biggest disappointment... None were bad but they all fell flat. I would stay away from the oysters for the simple fact that they were, well barely colder than "room temperature" (served on slat, no ice.. we are them right away but not ice cold, it was later in the evening on a mild day so not like the heat and sun warmed them up super fast or anything) The drinks were also part of the disappointment. I had a glass of wine, one of our friend had beers, but both my partner and our other friends tried cocktails and well, they were not quite at par with my expectations for a place such as NeXT, but it was quickly explained when the same lady that served us explained that there are currently (or that night?) No bar tender and that she was acting as both a waitress and a bartender. Once again, they were not undrinkable, just felt like I was at a friend's BBQ where she was trying new cocktail recipes and they didn't quite turn out "bar quality". Hopefully this is only a temporary matter... I think the nail in the coffin was the price. We knew what to expect, so don't get me wrong, the bill didn't shock us, but it added salt to our wounds were we had so-so meal and drinks and got to pay premium price for it all. This was my second time going to NeXT for their brunch board, and it did not disappoint. This is a pretty spacious restaurant and I'm sure it must make a really good event space. They have ample free, on-site, parking (always a bonus, especially since it is out in Stittsville a bit of a trek from downtown). The interior has a unique design, not fully in your face modern, but definitely fresh and open. I wouldn't mind seeing the place jazzed up a bit to match the *oomph* of the food. Once you make your way through the main entrance, the restaurant is split into two areas- a corner/high top area near the main entrance and by the bar, and a main dining hall. On my first visit, I was sat in the main hall, and this time we had a window by the main entrance. Spoiler alert: the food tastes just as good no matter where you're sitting! While I enjoyed my experience, I feel like I should note that on this particular visit we felt that service could have been a bit... better. Granted, it was busy, and a Sunday, but we did feel slightly put off by our server who was clearly not impressed when my friend asked some questions about one of the dishes due to her allergies. I don't want to dwell, but wanted to note it as it was the main reason I didn't give 5 stars. Customer service is key, no matter how great the food is and it was a somewhat off-putting. Moving along, back to the good stuff! The best way to describe the brunch board is to say that it is as a massive sample board of deliciousness. Their boards are made for two people and each person pays $34- including tea or coffee and your choice of one of five fresh juices along with 18 different cold, hot, and sweet dishes to devour. I don't take brunch lightly so when I say this was a very satisfying dining experience, believe me. We left feeling fully satisfied, but not overwhelmingly full, and the variety of flavours checked off every craving on our list. So, for the moment of truth... the food! Hot: Ka-pow humboldt squid, Chorizo spice tempura fried cauliflower, Piggy's in a comforter (with poached egg and hollandaise on top) Duck confit poutine, Banana pancakes, St-Albert tempura cheese curds (with sriracha maple lick), Double crisp sesame snap chicken, 48 hour braised beef brisket, Bacon, and Lamb keftedes Cold: Chocolate croissant, Caramel sticky cinnamon roll, Ginger infused watermelon compression, Crispy aromatic green papaya, and House brewed fennel nappa slaw, Dessert: Crushed espresso meringue + banana eton mess, Fried graham cracker crusted cheese cake pops, and Butterscotch blow torched brûlée. Update 2018-10-21: Came back almost 5 years later and the menu has changed, but the food is still excellent. Portions are still small and prices are still high (one dish had 2 only scallops and it was $18). The 3 of us ordered 7 dishes ranging in price from $10-$18 each and I was still starving afterwards! Great place if you have a small appetite or a thick wallet. Original review: My father-in-law took my husband and I to NEXT recently. The decor is modern and sleek, the service was excellent, and the food good. Although I found that items were rather overpriced. We shared 5 items and then we each had a dessert. The Smoked Haddock and Corn Chowder ($12) was loved by my male dining companions, but not so much by me. I found it incredibly salty. It did have big chunks of fish, potatoes and corn though. The broth was rich and creamy. They served it to us in 3 cups (the server told us they sometimes serve their sharing soups in a kettle, so you can pour it out yourself, although I imagine that this would only work with soups without large pieces, unless the spout on the kettle is unusually large). The Prawn Pot Stickers (you get 6 for $12) were good, but honestly didn't taste any better than the ones you would get at any good Chinese Dim Sum place for half the price (a third of the price if you know where to go!) For the price, I was expecting them to be bursting with prawns. T'was not the case. The Seed to Sausage Charcuterie Board ($16) was interesting. There were 3 different types of sausages. I'm not a huge fan of sausage due to the high salt and fat content, but any sausage lover would surely love these. They were very flavourful. The Board came with a delicious eggplant jam, some pickled onions, jalapenos, a grainy mustard and some baguette crisps. You do not get a lot of anything in terms of quantity, but the presentation is nice and the quality was good. The Braised Molasses and Honey Beef Short Rib ($23) was delicious, but difficult to share because it was rather small. You get 1 rib and it sits atop of pile of mashed potatoes (there is apparently duck fat in the mashed potatoes - I only tried about a quarter teaspoon of it, so I couldn't really tell.) The rib was fall-off-the-bone tender, and was so tasty. The pistachio nuts added a nice texture to the dish. We also had the house cut fries (which was listed as a "Mini Share" which I thought was cute) ($6). The fries were thin shoestring fries, fried to perfection and tasted fabulous on their own. They also tasted fabulous dipped in the truffle mayo. There was a line of very finely milled sea salt on the side, which was delicious sprinkled on the fries, but because the salt was so finely milled, it's easy to inhale some of the powder and my husband and I both went into coughing fits as soon as we ate the salt. My father-in-law made a special request for his usual dessert (vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and maraschino cherries). They gladly accommodated his request, except they didn't have chocolate sauce, but he accepted their substitution of caramel peanut butter sauce. He enjoyed his dessert. My husband had the Crème Brûlée ($8). And he loved it. I had a small taste - it was very rich and creamy. I had the Tempura "crispy-sticky toffee" Pudding ($8). It is probably one of the most delicious desserts I have ever had. My jaw totally dropped when the server brought it to the table because it is huge. It is served on a board. The board is covered with marshmallow cream/fluff. Three good sized pieces of crispy sticky toffee are spaced out on the board on top of the marshmallow fluff (my husband described the pieces as mini deep-fried sticky and sweet french toast pieces). Salted caramel sauce is drizzled all over. And there is a side of vanilla ice cream. It was decadent. It was amazing. If you love sweets and are not a diabetic, you should leave room for dessert and order this. You will not be disappointed. It's worth the extra hours at the gym to make up for it, trust me. Our server was very sweet and friendly. She filled our waters and wine glasses regularly and checked up on us at appropriate intervals. Overall it was a great evening. The food is good, but I found the sharing plates overpriced for what you get. My partner and I decided to try this restaurant based on a recommendation from a coworker. She lives in deepest darkest Gatineau and drove all the way to Stittsville-Kanata to try the tasting menu. The tasting menu is chef's choice and you get 9 items in 5 waves for $72. We did not opt for that as my partner has a shellfish allergy and we were not that hungry. Reservations are highly recommended. We chose the tempura battered cheese curds with Sriracha maple sauce($11), the rib eye ($35) and the Blackie's chicken ($24). I had a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon ($15) This restaurant emphasizes sharing so all food is served in the middle of the table with serving utensils. Really a great idea. Everything was superb! Before tip the bill came to $115. We were quite full but wanted to continue our lovely night out so we had the Carmel creme brûlée for dessert and I ordered a decaf coffee. The only weak point to the evening was the coffee was not decaf which was likely a miscommunication with the staff as our waiter did not bring it to the table. Our waiter was experienced, friendly and attentive. There was a wedding going on in another room. With an open kitchen concept we were able to see how efficient and clean the kitchen was. A group of 10 of us went to next last night for dinner and had an amazing experience and meal. It is a very fun and lively atmosphere, if your looking for something quiet and tucked away, maybe not the place for you - the music is going and people are there to have fun and enjoy the food. We had a number of dishes including the Beef Short Ribs with duck fat mashed potatoes....oh my yum. The Ribs were literally pull apart with a fork tender, presentation was art - dessert was the Dirty Belgian Waffle....so unbelievable tasty - my children now wonder why waffles for breakfast can't be like that......I tried to explain the sugar makes them that crispy....they didn't seem to care......lol Everyone at the table raved about their dishes....and we all shared bits of each others dishes - service was fast, and excellent. Chef Blackie is extremely passionate about his restaurant and his food - in hundreds - more like thousands.....this is the first time....EVER, I have seen the Chef out of the kitchen table side talking with customers and ensuring their meal is perfect.....we even saw a plate pulled by him and sent back to the kitchen to be re-done. Dropped by early this summer to try their lunch menu. I don't want to comment on what the space looks like but it definitely wasn't a restaurant before. The renovations are pretty nice. We walked in and the place was dead. The hostess told us we could sit anywhere so we sat in the back room because it had a lot of light. We were told we couldn't sit there and we were seated elsewhere. The menu had a lunch special, 2 items for $20(ish) and I knew immediately what I'd be checking out. I noticed a large gap between when we got our menus and when we actually ordered. I ended up getting the tuna sashimi (I believe it was blue fin) and salt and pepper squid. There was another large gap before getting our food. They brought the first plates and it was the tuna sashimi. When I noticed it was seared, the waitress was gone. It wasn't mentioned on the menu and I would have ordered something else had I known. Due to the time it took for our order arriving at our table and not seeing our waitress around I decided to try it vs asking questions about it. It was OK, definitely not what I was expecting from a tuna sashimi but I died a little inside seeing they had seared blue fin tuna. The waitress came to take our plates away and the second plates came shortly after. My first bite and I notice no salt or pepper on the squid. I've been to NeXT once before but this was my first sit-down meal, and boy was it worth it. We decided on the tasting menu given that the menu had us drooling just reading about what we could enjoy. I won't go through the play by play but all 9 dishes were delicious. The restaurant was very quiet but it was a Tuesday evening so that wasn't a shock. Service was outstanding and our waitress was very knowledgeable about each dish and it's components. Would recommend to anyone for a special occasion or just some good food. Mains start at $24 and go to $35 on the current menu. At that price point, it's the best value in the West end of the city. read more

I came here on a day off for lunch on Friday, and was the first one in the restaurant, so it was very relaxed! (Lunch is only Thursday + Friday) The restaurant looks like a large corner lot house, and is not really close to other amenities in Kanata. All dishes are $9! - Ribeye steak tartare: very tasty, I really enjoyed the mix of flavors and there were a couple of different sauces on the plate. Perfect with the crostini thins! - General blackie's chicken: somewhat more like teriyaki chicken, this was underwhelming, but it was nicely crispy on the outside. - Duck confit + truffled brie grilled cheese: absolutely delicious; the triple stack brioche toasty loaf was the perfect texture against the tender duck, and there was sufficient cheese to hold it all together! I wanted more of this, and want to recreate this for an amazing breakfast! - Pan seared pickerel: lighter in flavor but seared very nicely. I wish they had couscous or another pasta instead of plain white rice, but the fish was yummy. Service was very polite and not rushed. The atmosphere is very comfy and modern, with high ceilings and lots of natural light. You can see the chefs working in the kitchen which is fun to watch! read more

Happy I finally tried NeXT! Came for brunch and everything was delicious. For brunch there's only one option, 2 people share the brunch board at $30 each. There are 17 things to try, some cold some hot. It gives you a chance to try a ton of stuff you normally wouldn't. Our faves were the cheese curd tempura, Cauli flower tempura and pork belly. Food came out quickly and service was great, all the staff were very friendly. It is pretty expensive for brunch, but for the quality and the sheer amount you get it's well worth it. Highly recommend the 8 course blind tasting menu. Without a doubt one of the best meals I've eaten in ottawa. The server will ask you your likes and dislikes and from there, a masterpiece is created. I heard about NeXT after meeting the co-founder, Chef Michael Blackie, at Baconpalooza last year. I've had their Christmas turkey meals before, which you can order (well ahead of time) to take home for Christmas dinner instead of making one yourself. It's always been delicious, great quality, well-made food and you will not be disappointed. Most recently, I visited the NeXT restaurant for the first time for their Sunday Brunch Board for my girlfriend's birthday. It's $30 per person and meant to be shared by two people - if you're a small eater, you could split it between three people, as it is quite large. They only have the brunch board option during this time on Sunday, so no actual breakfast or a la carte items that you can order, and they're closed on Saturday. Some of the dishes at the restaurant were different than the ones listed in the menu on the website, but we were happy either way. For the cold items, there was viennoiserie (baked goods like croissants and caramel cinnamon rolls), three melon compression, fresh mozzarella buffalo and heirloom tomato salad, and house brewed fennel nappa slaw. For the hot items, there was lime and cumin kissed Humboldt squid, ka-pow cauliflower, poached egg, scrambled eggs, blueberry pancakes, St-Albert tempura cheese curds, Blacki's crispy beef, 24-hour charcoal braised beef brisket, bacon rashers, and tom kha gai soup shooters. The sweets included milk chocolate mouse with caramelized banana and toasted marshmallow, toasted buttered waffles with orange-maple marmalade and pecans, and ginger crème brûlée. Also comes with coffee, tea, or orange, apple, or cranberry juice. I won't go through every single item since there are so many - just a few notes: 1) As they instruct, you should eat the hot items first before the cold items. 2) Most of the items that are usually large, like the waffles and pancakes, were mini versions. 3) The poached and scrambled eggs with Balderson cheddar cheese were served together on top of the thick bacon rashers and toasted slices of Première Moisson country loaf - not what I expected and messy, but delicious and would be great on its own. 4) The tempura cheese curds were awesome, as expected - super crunchy with all the batter, and very addictive. 5) The crispy beef wasn't actually as crispy as we would've liked (over-sauced?), but had good flavor. 6) The chocolate mousse and Belgian waffle were way too sweet for me with the marshmallow and marmalade, even at their mini sizes, but the ginger crème brûlée was different and I could have easily eaten a lot more of it. We also ordered a Bourbon Fizzy Bubbly, made with Woodford reserve, lemonade, and ice, which was nice and refreshing, and not too sweet. The price was $13 for 2oz, and there's also an option to order a pitcher (three drinks worth) for $35. Service was great throughout, explaining the board to us and ensuring we were all good throughout the meal. We were there for some time and it started to get quite busy, but the service was the same, which is really great. A Neighborhood fine dining restaurant. Sunday night. Good service and atmosphere. Tasty meal. Had the 'blind sharing menu' inspired by Chef Blackie's travels. Oh boy, was this description accurate. The 8 courses were: 1. Pickled cantaloupe salad - one of the best salads I've had in my life 2. Olive oil French baguette with a Lebanese cream sauce - bread fried Chinese style 3. Fried cauliflower - coated in a sweet and spicy sauce, reminds me of Korean fried chicken. 4. Curry chickpea soup - spiced almost exactly like a Singaporean curry laksa 5. Grilled Humbolt squid - Southern California dish with a Chinese street BBQ spice mix 6. 24 hour braised beef brisket with fennel slaw - taste pretty much like a good Southern BBQ brisket 7. Lamb shank with duck fat mash 8. Desert trio of chocolate banana mousse with meringue, lemon curd, creme brulee Many Asian inspired dishes. Was everything tasty? Yes. Cohesive: Maybe. The courses feel a bit flat near the end of the meal. Would recommend if you are an adventurous eater wanting to try something different from the usual Canadian/America (New) food. One of the best places to go for a special outing in Ottawa! The food was superlicious and the service was great! Nestled in an upper middle class neighborhood in Ottawa, you can easily miss this place without a GPS. Good: from the appetisers to dessert everything was great. I recommend getting their shushing appetiser and their creme brulé Bad: a bit pricey $$$-$$$$ but the quality of food and service was impeccable.
