Next to Nature has helped us with our landscaping a lot over the past three years! First and foremost, they handled a large installation for us, totaling almost 2,500 square feet of ornamental landscaping space around our house. Our installation rep was fantastic, and listened to all our requests and concerns, and also did a great job taking our outdoor skills (read: lack thereof) into consideration when offering up choices for greenery and color around our house! It was a blast getting to pick through options! We opted for all sorts of trees, bushes, plants, and ornamental grasses. Everything was installed quickly and professionally, and came out fantastic! Afterward, we've also had them perform annual maintenance for all the plant beds and mulch application. On the plus side, this work has always been done to high standards, and looks fantastic when complete! The piece that hasn't be as fun to deal with is that their prices have crept up each of the years we've worked with them, and although some amount of inflationary increase is normal, the price increases have been uncomfortably higher than that. So, my recommendation is to make sure to do your due diligence on competitive bids, but, overall, and outside of the cost, we've been pretty happy with our experience and our beautiful landscaping! read more

Next To Nature Landscape is the poorest company I've felt with in recent years. Their communication is deplorable and their excuses leave much to be desired. The men who worked in my yard were polite non English speaking and worked diligently . If you like calling a business with a question and don't mind prompts, then you are rerouted to a voice mail. It has nothing to do with money, merely communication. How do you conduct a business like that. I didn't have a choice, Water One assigned them to repair over 2,000 feet of sod. I merely asked for an approximate date near the end of September or early October. Why anyone would consider them a valuable partner is beyond me. read more

This company was working in my neighborhood and damaged my tree. We had video of it happening. The back end of the trailer caught my tree branch and broke is. This was not a small branch. The driver stopped as he knew what he did and simply drove off and parked on the other side of the road to complete whatever service he has in the area. When my wife came out and noticed the tree damage they said nothing. After reviewing video from neighbors and my own system, I called the business. Their Office Coordinator, Sulet Lopez, insisted that she needed as clear of a video as possible sent. I sent a very clear video. On October 7th she stated that she would have Brad Peters from upper management contact me. After not hearing anything for 3 days I emailed and indicated that I had to have the branch removed since it was a large branch and hanging in the street. Still no response and no call from Brad. On October 16th I emailed again and requested a call or at least a response...nothing. On October 18th I once again asked for the response or call and this time I indicated I would not be reaching out again and simply leaving a review and posting the video on social media to warn people about this experience. I received a call from Austin Hall the next day. I missed it and called back. He seemed lost on what to do or say in this situation. I asked him if anything needed to be done to the tree to ensure that it would not have any additional issues and he said he does not know and did not think so. I then stated that I will receive a small charge for my landscaper removing the tree branch and disposing of it and asked if he would be willing to take care of this "small charge". He simply said no. He indicated that his driver never left the road..... At this time I was taken back and decided this was no longer worth discussing as this person and company obviously did not care that they damaged my property. A simple small gesture of acknowledging the mistake and handling what had to be a small $50 or less bill would have at least showed they cared about what happened, but instead he simply said no. He stated that the truck never ran off of the road, but did not bother taking responsibility for the height of the trailer catching this branch or that his company did in fact damage my property. Just because the truck never left the road does not mean that the driver was not responsible for his surroundings and damage he caused. Accidents happen and I would have been more than reasonable with this situation. Moral of the tale - If they will not take responsibility for something this small when I am not even a client, what will they not take responsibility for when doing a service for a client? read more

I live on State Line, adjacent to KU property that is an unused parking lot between 36th and 37th street. "Next To Nature's" crew was assembled en masse this morning so I went to inform them that the very last hold out of a formerly flourishing ground hog community was in one hole on the property. The young man walked with me, saw the hole and told me he had wondered if that was a rabbit hole. I said, "Nope. Groundhogs. Would you please tell your boss to leave the leaf cover intact in that one spot and minimize disturbance?" "Yes" Instead, they knocked down all flora and fauna over the hole. I approached the young man again. "Sorry", said he, "We called the boss and he said to clear it". Not sure if the boss, whose name was given, also instructed the supervisor of the crew to spray weeding chemicals directly down the hole for 10 seconds or not. That may have been the super's prerogative, but that is what they did next. Very disappointing and unbefitting your name. read more

Plants Died. They Did NOT Honor Warranty. Next to Nature did a big landscaping job for us. The estimate specifically gave us a two-year warranty on plants. Some plants died within the warranty period. We informed Next to Nature within the time limit. They promised to evaluate the problems and to replace the dead plantings. A few dead plants were replaced. As for the others, we tried to call, sent e-mails, and a certified letter. They never responded and they never replaced the plants. We had to go to small claims court to try to get this resolved. read more

Not sure why this says San Francisco as I am in Overland Park KS.....Just discovered Yelp so now I can post my feelings! Unbelievably bad customer communication and lack of professionalism by their Sr management. Had them bid on shovel edge cutting and mulch for our beds months ago and told them we wanted to go with them. A very friendly crew showed up to do the bed edge cutting and mulch. Further, BEFORE the crew even began their work, the person who originally quoted our job also came by to talk to the crew about how the job was to be completed. Later the crew head asked if what they had done in front was what we wanted and we said yes it looks great. I asked if the mulch would be started soon and crew head said yes they were just finishing the back. Told him that's great and we were looking forward to seeing it. About 30 minutes later I looked out and see no one there and the bed edging was not quite finished in back and no mulch anywhere. A person, who I had never spoken to previously and who I came to find out was the boss of the person who quoted our job, left a very abrupt message on my phone saying he was pulling his team off our job and they will not be back. Confused and thinking it was due to a storm coming soon, I called this member of the Sr Mgmt team back to get an understanding what was happening and when they would be back and I got no further than giving my name when he proceeded to give me a completely unprofessional verbal beat down about they are not going to finish the job and not to call him. When I asked for some explanation as to what had happened and what he meant by "they would not finish the job", he would not offer ANY reason just kept yelling "what didn't I understand, they weren't going to finish our job". Trying to calm him down, I kept trying to get an understanding of what possibly could have happened between our very friendly crew and then this call I found myself on and nothing but abusive yelling. I finally thought that I don't deserve this abuse and got off the call and called their main office. A person at the main office then called this Sr Mgmt team person back to get more info on this issue. Apparently the reason he gave them was they are too big a company to take the time to do shovel cut bed edging, even though 1) that is what they had quoted and the crew had the paperwork indicating the same, and 2) even though it was their person who quoted the job who came by our home and advised the crew what was to be done on this job. I believe it is apparent they must have underbid the project and this was their way of getting out of doing the job. Pretty unprofessional. If this were a professionally run business, with customer service as their top priority, this could have been handled much differently. Even though it was one of their management team who came by and told the crew what was to be done, if this other Sr Manager would have taken a moment to call me in a professional manner to discuss that they really misquoted on what they ordinarily do what was being done in my yard is actually something more involved, we could certainly have been able to come to an understanding and worked this out even if it required adjusting the quote. THAT never occurred and he just left my yard half completed and indicated "he didn't care". If you want to work with a group that puts this type in their senior management team, has no problems verbally abusing a customer, then NEXT TO NATURE is for you. I recommend you skip the verbal beat down and find another landscape company. read more

We explained in detail what we desired and were told that he would get back to us with a plan. After waiting several weeks with no word, we contacted him and he sent a partial plan, which basically didn't include what we had said we wanted, ie actual limestone, granite counter tops, etc. We expressed concern and were told he was going on vacation and would get back to us with plans upon his return. After waiting several week and hearing nothing, we e-mailed him and got no response after 5 days. We phoned and he was unable to talk with us. We requested to speak to the owner and were told he would call us. It has been over a week and we've heard nothing. What a disappointment this company has been. read more

Thank goodness I discovered YELP. I can now comment on the work that was done by this group at my house 7 years ago. There are several reasons for the low rating: 1. They sent a summer intern or someone of that experience to do my $25K + job of putting in a patio, outdoor kitchen, fireplace and pergola. This person had zero experience or at least performed as if they had none. (they had to completely disassemble the fireplace they built because of errors). 2. They listened to my wishes (therefore 2 stars), but gave me absolutely NO advice - this resulted in having a stainless cabinet installed with my grill kitchen that collects water when it rains. 3. They also used smaller size posts on the pergola than on the rest of my deck and in the windy area we are in the pergola rocks back and forth. This also makes the sunscreen be constantly out of square for raising and lowering. It also looks like an add-on. They claimed they couldn't get the larger posts. I should have know better than to trust this answer. They probably were "unavailable" under the estimated price they provided. 4. They paid no attention at all to drainage of rainwater on the deck they installed. The result is that it holds water and dirt rather than draining into the yard when it rains. 5. They installed a stainless steel fireplace that I chose and it works perfectly. However, they put an iron support beam above it to lay blocks on. Result - the beam rusts, rust runs down and rust stains cover the fireplace. Strictly amateur judgement. This was a classic example of having an experienced person visit, gain trust and do the estimate; then shift to having the work done by an inexperienced aid. Most of the problems have come to light too late to invoke a guarantee, but not too late to protect others from this organization. read more
