A really cool little store, they specialize in imported media from Hong Kong: newspapers, magazines, CDs, comics, and DVDs too. I used to get Yes! magazines here and still order some CDs and other items if I cannot get them as digital media or just want the physical item itself. When I lived in the neighborhood back in the day, there were several stores like this which were great places to get the latest Cantopop albums but most have close up shop now with so much being online these days, it's refreshing and comforting to know one is hanging on because I am sure there's plenty of older people around who do want their actual newspaper, old Gigi Leung and Sally Yeh CDs, and the like. They apparently host another business inside which does international shipping, car registration, and who knows what else. It's certainly a cool place to check out if you're into Hong Kong pop culture. read more

It may looked like a liquor store from the outside but it's more once inside. They sell imported Asian items, specifically media from Hong Kong (comic books, music, knick-knacks, etc.). Ng Hing Kee is one of those shops that the average Yelper probably wouldn't give a second glance in passing (ie wouldn't give two $hit$ about), unless he/she has a serious case of Hong Kong media fetish or A$IAN collector (in terms of magazines or movies with tons of celebrity gossip juice pictures of the latest starlets) NHK (not the Japanese Television station), also has two locations in LA (Alhambra and Monterey Park). The SF one has moved at least once or twice and has been around for a real long long time. Fans of the comic book Old Master Q , integral to Hong Kong 60s/70s/80s culture (like how Dilbert is to Silly Cone Valley type high tech $lave$, or Charlie Brown & Snoopy to most Americans) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Master_Q especially those who bought the black and white paper thin cover versions during the 80s and 90s in the US will probably remember a SF address printed somewhere in those comics in the back, but the name of the distributor (or publisher) was unmistakenably Ng Hing Kee. NHK probably has some wholesale distribution (of magazines and print media from Hong Kong) and printing business that happens in the background, but in terms of a customer visible storefront, this location is it. For a place that supposedly does the above businesses in the background, the storefront is very lackluster, and looks like a pseudo magazine and back issue warehouse. Missed an issue of Hong Kong Gossip Mag Rag within the last month? No problem, search around (if you can read Chinese) and you will find it here. Need some pop tarlet or pretty boy bip bop music VCD or DVD live concert fix that was super hot 8 years ago, but is selling like Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice and New Kids On The Block debut albums? You will find it here. Want the latest version of some Japanese managa, HK edition with Chinese text, that isn't very interesting? You will find it here. Good luck looking for earlier issues. Need some random almost out of circulation Canto or Mando pop music CD (that nobody gives two $hit$ about anymore) that should be in the bargain bin, yet somehow that $16.95 price sticker seems to persist since its inception into the store? You will find it here. So you must be wondering, with all that inventory, how do they make money? I have no idea. The latest celebrity gossip juice mags sell (whether air freighted or shipped by $ea at a lower cost), as do newspapers, but the profit margins are slow. Once in a blue moon, they may have some boxes of VCDs outside (ie the $hit they can't get rid of that most people still don't give two $hit$ about) priced to get rid of. I purchased 3 $88 Big 4 concert tickets along with the bus ride. I got on the bus #4 from Oakland Chinatown that comes back on the same day. First incident occurred on the way to Tahoe, we waited 25 minutes for someone who eventually did not show up anyways. After 25 minutes, 2 elders got on the bus, but they were supposed to be on the later bus. After the guide - Lisa - found out that the elders got on the wrong bus, the guide dropped the 2 elders off 7 streets away from where they were supposed to be, leaving them to walk back to their original spot in front of Bank of America. Second incident occurred when the bus driver did not know his way to Tahoe and he did not have a GPS. In addition to that, we almost got in an accident several times because someone was mad at our bus driver and wanted to race him. Third incident occurred 15 minutes into our trip back home, after the concert, the bus we were on apparently did not have headlights. We tried calling the tour guide, who did not leave with us, and she told us that it was no longer her business and that we should call another guy. At first, we stopped by a gas station after knowing the headlight problem. The bus driver insisted that he fixed the situation and would not turn back to switch a different bus. After 1.5 hour downhill, the headlight problem worsened and the whole bus requested the bus to be stopped at another gas station. It took the other bus 1.5 hour to come down and drive us home, by that time, it was already 2:10 AM. The fourth incident happened on our way home on the new bus. We had no idea how fast the bus driver was driving, but it passed most of the cars on the road. It was able to get us back home in 2.5 hours, when it should have taken 3+ hours. There were many incidents that we were in another lane. Under these circumstances, I highly recommend you to reconsider the bus option offered with these concert tickets. This company has put us through extreme danger and traumatic stress, I believe that we should be reimbursed for the cost of the whole trip including the concert tickets. read more

I usually like coming here to look at their cd's and videos from Hong Kong and elsewhere. However, I feel I have to slam this place for the bad attitude I got this past Wednesday night. I guess the store was closing. I went in there and the lady asked "what do you want?" in Chinese. What a f***ing b****, typical damn bad attitude "dai luk pao" (or Mainland Chinese older lady, in Cantonese). Being Chinese myself (though from Hong Kong and not the mainland), I despise the bitchy attitudes I commonly run across at such Chinese businesses. read more
