I would twinkle the black and white piano keys of our family Wurlitzer daily and only stop to get up off the piano stool to do a timestep. A little out of place in my adopted Mexican-Filipino-German-Irish family, I found my best friend was my radio, and Jazz 88 my heartbeat. I wake up every morning and have coffee with "the Chairman" while putting on my lipstick. My trusty radio stays on almost all the time when I'm home, almost like Kim Jong Il's constant 24/7 radio North Korea program, but without the political propaganda and nationalism. Birdman's late jazz on Tuesday incorporates some bossa nova beats sometimes that makes me feel like 1966 all over again. On Wednesday nights, Drew Miller's zydeco sends my terrier into a frenzy and he picks up his accordion and plays along, much to the chagrin of our jazz-hating neighbors! Saturdays at our house we often have an impromptu afternoon salsa dance party, where it's perfectly acceptable to cha-cha and samba with a feather duster while cleaning the living room to Chris Springer's Latin Grooves. And later in the day after coming home after lindy hopping, it's delightful to eat leftover pizza and dance around the house to Ramond O'Donnell's Honkin' and Screamin' after midnight. Sundays I read the paper, have my coffee and listen to Big Band Brunch with Ross Porter before scooting out someplace, merrily driving along to Ida Garcia's Rugcutter Swing. Jazz Roots rounds out Sunday night with the very inspiration that started it all! I loved Lou Curtiss' quirky program a few weeks ago with all early jazz chicken-dinner songs. She goes through the motions of describing the restaurant and food, but she reviews places *I* want to know more about. 2 - Seth Comes give great "High Hat" commentary. Like most music bloggers, Seth makes sure to let you know that YOUR favorite band sucks. At least Seth is witty, Halloran for what it's worth *was* too predicable. 3 - Strip Club ads. The Walrus is my new favorite local radio station! I don't know if I'm the youngest person to yelp…read morethis, but I don't care. For the longest time, I've been one of the San Diegans who have been victims of listening to overplayed songs. Yes, I'm talking to you Z90, Channel 933, and even my long-time faves, 92.5, 96.5 and 103.7. The Walrus never plays the same song on the same day, and rarely, if ever plays the same song on the same week. Listeners can even input songs they want to or don't want to hear. The song list includes a great, eclectic mix of rock, R&B and some disco songs from the 60s, 70s and early 80s. I grew up listening to 96.5 (when it played mostly 70s/80s stuff), my parents' original CDs, and their karaoke singing. Some of the Walrus' songs bring back great childhood memories. Out of the stations that play mellow music in the evening, the Walrus' choice of slow jams is my favorite. These qualities alone sell the station to me, but to top it off, the station has the "Breakfast with the Beatles" program every Sunday, 9 AM-12 noon! Each Sunday, the Beatles playlist has a common theme, such as "Beatles songs with the best lyrics" or the Beatles Anthology. Great for Beatles fans like me, or people who want to learn about the band. I don't know if I'm lucky enough or if the Walrus has improved the quality of their signals, but my car receives clear reception of the station. I have no problems hearing the station from the South Bay all the way to some parts of Laguna Beach! I loved how I heard the Chi-Lites' "Have You Seen Her," Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" (I thought of "the Carlton dance" from Fresh Prince) and "Morning Has Broken" back to back this morning.
