We actually stumbled upon this place on a whim. We were in the area to run some errands and quickly searched for a place to eat nearby. I saw Nhon Hoa and their banh mi pictures so I was willing to give it a try. That one decision made this place all the more special because it was a HIT. We walked inside and it was pretty small. There's two tables by the front and a narrow hallway by the side of the shop that fit a couple of smaller tables against the wall. Their menu was quite extensive, they had so many options to choose from. But we came for banh mi's, and they amazingly had so many meat options to choose from. My boyfriend got the Beef Satay banh mi, and I got the Lemongrass Chicken banh mi. Also they had a big drink menu too, so I got the Black Milk Tea with boba pearls. Service was pretty quick, wait time wasn't too long. The inside was pretty simple, very hole in the wall. We took it to go and enjoyed our food at home. So my first impression started with the Black Milk Tea with boba. From the first sip, I knew this place was going to be a certified banger. This wasn't a fancy boba place where I could customize the sugar and ice level to my liking at different percentages, but I was astounded that the sugar level was perfect. The hint of sweetness came from the boba pearls rather than the drink itself. I didn't even have to ask or customize, but this place nailed my palette and exactly how I like my boba. If they could do that, I knew that their sandwiches would deliver. And I was right. My Lemongrass Chicken sub was phenomenal. It was easy to tell that the bread was freshly made in house. The outside was toasted and slightly crispy, but not too hard where it scrapes the top of your mouth. But the inside part of the baguette was soft. The veggies inside tasted fresh and crisp. I don't know what's in that special mayo, but it coated the veggies and meat wonderfully. The Lemongrass Chicken was flavorful, had a great combination of sweet and savory. Both our sandwiches were wrapped and it helped so much keeping the contents and sauce from spilling everywhere. My boyfriend got a Beef Satay sub. Both sandwiches were superb and you can't go wrong choosing between the two, but I think I was a little bit more partial towards the Beef Satay. For me I tend to choose more savory in the sweet and savory combination, and I felt like the Beef Satay had the perfect savory and umami combination together. Flavor was a bit more deeper in the Beef Satay. I love banh mi and I have to say that this is the best banh mi I've ever had in my life. 5/5 for me. Great little spot for a quick bite on a hot day. Fresh fruit bubble tea, salad rolls, vermicelli, Vietnamese subs... what more could you ask for? There are 2 small tables inside and 2 small bistro size tables outside. Free one hour parking around the corner in front of medical supply store or paid parking out front on Whyte (But 15 minutes is free!) This has been my go to this dance comp season when I've got 1-2 hours to kill while my kiddo prepares to perform at the U of A. In the winter/colder months I like Remedy on 109th to kill time (free parking when you register your license plate). This week I had fresh fruit mango bubble tea (excellent and not too sweet), Vietnamese iced coffee (sweeter than I prefer so next time I'd ask for more ice or add a little water), and satay beef salad rolls (decent for a quick to go). This local institution has been around for ages. Serving up authentic Bahn Mi and lots of other delicious Vietnamese treats. Service is quick and to the point. Non-pretentious and welcoming, Nhon Hoa is an approachable spot that will have you drooling! I had the Grilled Pork with no jalapeño. I think maybe next time I will try it with the peppers. Great Vietnamese sandwich joint on the Ave! Perfect lunch spot for a Banh Mi sandwich and a cold drink (iced coffee, bubble tea). They have quite a few veggie options for the sandwiches including veggie chicken, beef and tofu. The sandwich is warm and piled with cilantro! Usually a good place for a sub. This time, I tried #30, the pork and vermacelli with a spring roll. It wasn't half bad, it was ALL bad. Also, I had a little bug crawl out of my bowl. Then, I found a tiny, human hair. I'm not squeamish, so these things ready don't bother me. What bothered me was getting the runs the next day. I ain't got time for that! At $8.99 I thought I was getting a bargain. The ingredients just tasted cheap. You get what you pay for. With other Asian food restaurants on Whyte Ave, there's no need to return here. I love this place, it's a true gem. In my opinion this is the best meal you can get in Edmonton for this little amount of money. I don't get to eat here near enough as Whyte is a bit of a distance for us from St. Albert and we rarely head down this way. Their Banh Mi subs are awesome. Went there to grab a quick bite to go and eat at home. For 8.14 TX included you get a foot long banh mi sub, 2 Vietnamese rolls and a soft drink. This is a really good price but more importantly the food is good. You can choose your sandwich and I took the chicken satay one. The taste is really good. Even the rolls were good. They tasted differently than those I've had before and I think they were better. The food is really good so don't take to heart what the place looks like it's worth it. And one thing to be advised this is a cash only joint. They do have an atmosphere on site but those usually have crazy fees. read more

After reading other reviews, I decided to go ahead and try this place. As I walked in, I saw a man putting up new menu signs on the wall, so I assume they just raised their prices. You can now get a sub for $6 (which is still pretty good pricing) or a combo meal, which includes a sub, a can of pop and two egg rolls for $7. This time around, I got the satay chicken sub and it was delicious. I tried another Vietnamese sub place on Whyte earlier this week (V Sandwiches) and if I had to choose between that one and Nhon Hoa, well... that's a though call. Vietnamese subs are so delicious and Nhon Hoa is one such beacon of hope on Whyte Ave that serves up a variety of subs, along with soups and side orders. What I like best about Nhon Hoa is the extremely local aspect of it. It's like a small little shop (right next to Flirt cupcakes) with very basic seating capacity and extremely affordable food ($3.50 for a sub!). Perfect for an afternoon walk-by on Whyte or a catch up on what's happening in the Vue weekly with your lunch. The cold cut combo sandwich is one that I've really started liking. Although Vietnamese subs are a "western" concept, in that they're found mainly in places with immigrant Vietnamese populations; the sub sticks true to the roots of the very minimalist kind, we now expect of of Vietnamese food. The sandwiches are served on a long and thin sub, (looks like a real submarine, actually!) with cilantro, jalapeño and some very basic dressing. I like that the main flavors associated with a particular sub lie strictly with the basic ingredients and not some fancy sauce overpowering the flavors. Must try - must want. Lightly toasted so the crust is crisp and leaves the entirety of the front of your shirt covered in the pre-requisite crumbs, the super soft tender bread interior doesnt detract from the savory meats and fresh vege that define a delicious banh mi. I went with the traditional assorted cold cut sub - mixed veitch deli meats and pate (next time I'm getting extra pate as I love the unami packed savoriness it adds to each bite) and hubby inhaled his satay chicken sub- stuffed with a creamy cantonese-portugese style curried chicken. Conveniently located on Whyte Ave, it's a great spot to pick up some Viet subs if you're not around Chinatown's Van Loc... Best place in town for affordable but GOOOOOD food. $12-$14 for 2 people depending on which bánh mì you get, and you're full after. She's generous with the pickled carrots which adds a ton of balance to the dish. Lots of meat and everything. Very nice and polite lady too. She always takes note of your requests (extra jalapeño, extra cilantro,...). This location on Whyte Ave is the best bánh mì in Edmonton. I was hoping to compare this to V sandwiches, but what I ordered was so different its hard to compare. The chicken satay was a mildly spicy yellow curry sandwich. Soft on the inside with a thin chewy crust. I had the combo with wonton soup and a can of pop for $9. Only complaint is I didn't know it was cash only. They have an ATM but I only had visa on me, so I had to walk to get my wallet and then to the bank three blocks down and back again. It was still worth it. I've only ever had Bahm Mi twice. I always park in front of Nhon Hoa but I finally stopped in for a quick snack the other day. First of all, I was surprised at how huge the menu was! At least a dozen varieties of subs, if not more, on a huge board up on the wall. Plus a few different soups and many kinds of rolls. I noticed a few vegetarian options as well. Sandwiches were cheap! The most basic ones were $4 and I think the priciest was only $4.75. Fantastic. I got a combo deal with a non-basic sub, two spring rolls and a pop and it came out to less than $8. Let me start off with this. It's a Vietnamese sub place and it's less than 5 minutes from my house. I come from Calgary where there are numerous awesome Vietnamese sub places. Unfortunately Edmonton is not nearly up the same level as Calgary in this small, but extremely important category. The subs here are tasty and less than $5. The salad rolls are delicious as well. I'm not much of a bubble tea person but they have quite a selection of those as well. I'd stay away from the fried spring rolls, they keep them under a heat lamp and they've never looked very appetizing. I discovered this little gem after visiting Flirt cupcakes next door. I was quite intrigued when I saw their sign advertising vietnamese sandwiches. I had only tried a vietnamese sandwich once and it wasn't from an ethnic restaurant, so I was anxious to try. The store itself is a little run down and not very attractive, however, that didn't dissuade me. They had a vast selection of vietnamese dishes, but I was only interested in the sandwiches. There was a younger couple running the place and were friendly enough. I ordered a pulled pork and chicken sandwich combo, which included a full sandwich (sub), two salad rolls and a pop all the $7.25! How could you beat that? Sure - this still beats Subway, but I think that Nhon Hoa serves the least tasty Banh Mi I've ever had. Why? 1) The bread - on a Saturday afternoon, mine tasted kinda stale. For my subs, I like my baguettes soft, fresh, and light. 2) No pickled daikon - Banh mi is never complete without pickled daikon. I liked a few things about my sandwich: a) The Price - $4 for a sub with cold cuts b) The Cold Cuts - yeah, they were still tasty To top it off, Nhon Hoa is cash only. And I don't like carrying cash. Nice little Viet sandwich shop. As a hard core fan of Van Loc in the Avenue of Nations, I found this place lacked some of the traditional details. The bread was not as good and wasn't toasted, so lacked that crunch. But flavours were fresh and a nice change from subs from the big chains. The banh mi (Vietnamese sub) craze has hit Whyte Avenue. Nhon Hoa already has a reputation for serving excellent subs and fast food from its Chinatown location. The subs are delicious and inexpensive (they start at a mere $3.50). I had a tofu sub and it was full of tofu cubes, cilantro, carrots, cucumbers, and mayonnaise on a warm baguette. There is also the option for a combo with a bubble tea, soup, or spring rolls. I would stay away from anything kept under the heat lamps, but if it is made fresh, go for it. I will definitely head to Nhon Hoa if the sub craving hits me in this part of the city. read more

Great subs! I got the combo number three and upgraded the pop to iced Vietnamese coffee, which was huge! It's in a large to go cup, much bigger than I thought it would be. Spring rolls were fresh and the sub was excellent, has pate, which is essential in a Vietnamese sub. read more

This is easily my favourite place in Edmonton to stop in for a classic combo Vietnamese sub. Their bread is fresh each time I've come in, with all of your favourite ingredients. So, so, sooooo good! I love these long skinny Vietnamese subs! I love that they are cheap, $4 to fill me up! I love the flavour of the pulled pork mixed with the crispy cucumber, cilantro and jalapeno veg that perfectly balances the flaky bun. I continue to comeback to enjoy the soup and subs and the great value, and recently they put new tables and chairs in their eatery. I was told their older patrons had difficulty using the chair's they didn't have enough back support. I recently ordered their cold cuts combo sub, with a small order of won ton soup- to take home. The sub was fresh and crispy and the soup broth was very tasty. Ill keep returning for the taste and over all quality. It is best to bring cash, as they don't take debit, the last time I was there there was a problem with the portable bank machine. Food prices are very low under 5 bucks, with a great variety of food to choose from. I'll be back for my next Vietnamese sub fix, I usually ask for a small side of hot sauce to dip my sub into-its always yummy and a must try if you haven't been there yet!
